License Plate Reader Grant

5 posts in this topic

The Governors office announced today that the Greenburgh police department received a $22,500 grant from NYS for a license plate reader package. The agency will use the technology in its efforts to target burglaries. Special thanks to Chief Chris McNerney and Sgt. Nick Reckson for seeking the grant. Greenburgh was the only community in Westchester to receive this grant, according to the Governor's office. This resource will help the police protect residents and our property. 31 law enforcement agencies in NYS received the grant funds.

Does that mean the equipment can only be used for burglaries, or for revenue-producing traffic enforcement as well? I know some of these systems pay for themselves, lol.

Does any legislation in NY address the record keeping and storage of LPR photos/data?

Not that I am aware of. The long term storage of the data helps to determine a persons patterns, whether they are suspect in a crime or not. Just like your EZ-Pass tag is read in places no where near a toll. The government also uses facial recognition technology scanned from drivers license photos to build databases. We are increasingly under surveillance. Evermore it is up to the individual to prove his innocence rather than the states' duty to prove guilt.
