I believe it all goes by the list 60 control has. Each department lists which departments in which order they want mutual aid from.  NR does border a majority of Eastchester and has been number 1 on there mutual aid list for a long time.

Station 4 is the home of Engine 30. With that there are two career staff stationed there 24/7. The upstairs is a meeting room where the volunteers as well a various public oginizations hold meetings. The room with the bar etc is the quarters of the Union Corners Engine & Hose Co. Which is the volunteer company quartered in the house. Yes, the volunteers are in a sad state. Would be great to see them rise again. This station is vital to the Chester Heights section of Eastchester in which it is located. New Rochelle road has a very high traffic level which would slow Eng 27 coming from the center of town or Eng 29 coming from Bronxville. this firehouse provides quick response for EMS and all fire emergencies to Chester Heights.

Yes, I have also heard that there are issues with the Volunteer FF's in Eastchester, with allot of 'Smoke' (excuse the pun) coming from within the Eastchester Board of Fire Commissioners concerning the Volunteers. Would be nice for these 2 factions (Volunteers and the EBOFC) within the Eastchester Fire Department, to be able to resolve their issues/disputes, to allow for the Volunteer Side of the Department, to once again, 'compliment' the Paid Side of the Department (as it was years ago), and then, possibly, the FDMV (Mount Vernon) could learn a thing or two on how to utilize a Volunteer Staff to suppliment the Paid Staff (instead of always calling on Mutual Aid).
Watching Winters and Lore go at it, each and every Board Meeting, on TV, is like watching a WWE Championship Wrestling Match - LOL : )

I highly doubt this. The vast majority of their district is well covered with hydrants. There is one area on the east end of town that borders North Castle that if I recall has a lengthy lay but I cant imagine them spending the money on a tanker for this. Also going back six months on the district meeting notes that are available on their website there is no mention of a tanker purchase.

I, along with 25 of my Brothers spent 2 days paying our respect to Lt Walsh and FF Kennedy. I have to tell you that there needs to be a class on proper etiquette taught to the younger generation of firefighters. I can't tell you how many members I saw carrying cases of beer on their shoulders walking the streets where our Brother was being celebrated. Guys just walking by the church with 24 on their shoulder. I don't really know if they were career or volley and don't really care who they are affiliated with but their actions disgusted me as well as other New Rochelle Firefighters. If you want to have a few beers between the service and the last drive past the sea of blue please go to a bar. If you want to tailgate and party in front of the civilians like morons please go to a football or baseball game. In front of the church and on peoples lawns is not the place!!!!

I think the entire NYS civil service testing needs to be computerized. The best civil service test I ever took was a computerized one in NYC. You get your "unofficial" score before you leave and can instantly get an idea on where you might be placed on a list. Instead of packing hundreds of people on a Saturday into a local high school it would be better to go to a civil service testing center sit down at a computer and take your test. it would be am ore relaxing and better test experience.

I also want to add that I think that Fire Commissioner elections should be moved to election day.
Having a independent voting day during the holiday season with limited poll hours doesn't help things much.

Being a former volunteer firefighter and a career firefighter for the last 23 years (an officer for the last 15), here is my take on it:
Being career does not make you any better than being volunteer. I know some volunteer departments in my old hometown (Dutchess County NY) where everyone is well certified and competent, and they show up very rapidly when the tones go off. Heck, some of those guys are better trained than the people I currently work with.
It all has to do with the following and applies to both volunteer and career departments:
Leadership -- if the department's leadership does not make sure that there is a means to get their membership trained and encourages it, the department will never be functional.
Membership -- if you can't get enough people to adequately staff the vehicles when called, then the department will not be functional.
Political Support -- if you can't get the support of your commissioners or supervising governmental entity, the department will not be functional.
Fire Prevention -- if the department or municipality doesn't take fire prevention seriously and does not have a good inspection program in place where property owners are held accountable, there will be fire safety issues.
I've seen terrible volunteer departments and I've seen terrible career departments. I've also seen great career departments and volunteer departments that would put most career departments to shame. I really don't think it has anything to do with volunteer vs. career as a whole, but the specific area in NJ.
I've seen many departments here in Florida go from volunteer to career and shut down/disband firehouses completely so they could pay the staff of 2 firefighters on an engine for each of the other stations covering a larger area. Yes, you have 100% assurance a unit will respond immediately, but you have less units and longer response times in those areas where the fire stations were shut down.
This is just my 2 cents.

From what I have heard about this electrical fire, unless someone called it in when the problem first started happening it would not made much of a difference. People forget you had 30 MPH winds driving that fire so once flame broke out the theory of fire doubling every minute went out the window.
I have heard of plenty of large fires were paid departments were completely in charge and they still lost a lot. I have heard paid departments cancel mutual aid just to end up calling them back 10 minutes later as they are loosing the building.
No volunteers are not perfect but no one is. In this current world especially in our situation where we have a large mix of paid and volunteer departments we need to stop fighting one another and work with each other to get the job done.
Believe it or not volunteers will support paid firefighters MORE when they are not A**holes back at them.

That rig spends more time in the shop than on the road. It does not really matter because it does not fit in there temp firehouse that they have been renting for 2 1/2 years. So in summary it has been OOS for 2 1/2 years The taxpayers are being ripped off.
