What ever happened to LoJack?

7 posts in this topic

The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System is an aftermarket vehicle tracking system that allows vehicles to be tracked by police, with the aim of recovering them in case of theft.

90% recovery rate. The name "LoJack" was coined to be the "antithesis of hijack", wherein "hijack" refers to the theft of a vehicle through force.

Back in the late 90's and early 2000's numerous police agencies had LoJack receivers in police vehicles.

Very noticeable with the 4 antennas and receiver in vehicle that would beep and give out a code.

I don't see them anymore.

Any PD agencies still use them?

Definitely still around as it is still actively marketed in dealers. What happens though if the local municipality does not/no longer uses the receivers, are the owners SOL?

I don't think that "LoJack" is widely used anymore per se, but many AVL and fleet tracking programs now have the ability to do the exact same thing. Most likely they departments have incorporated them into other larger pieces of hardware.

It came with my 2014 Honda CRV.

I do not know if the PD can track it, but it reduces my insurance and if stolen and not recovered LoJack claims they will cover me anyway.

Lots of construction equipment has Lojack installed on it too. There's a huge black market for that stuff.
