Controversy and media attention is what these “fringe” groups feed off of, the best way we can honor our fallen brothers is by ignoring these groups.

I couldn't agree more. The embarrassment is only in the article. And as was said before, this is a proud time for this job. It's been impressive to meet an incredible number of members of this job (and others) all working to help strangers in hard hit areas.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at home and at work, like I'm sure many of us are.

Years ago I had a good friend (no names) that was a vegetarian, he never had any problems. He was in 4 companies, truck then rescue as a firefighter, truck as a Lt. and truck as a Capt. The historical firehouse kitchen culture is sacred, but so is brotherhood, 6 companies in 8 years is not a diet issue, this will never make it into the mainstrean or even the fringe media, so it is up to the members of this board to keep the truth flowing. To M' AVE this person is not an embarrassment to your job, he's an embarrassment to himself, we see him for what he is, using this "diet" issue as as means to an end for personal gain, stay strong your brothers know the truth.

Been in 6 companies in 8 years. He's a problem we've had brothers who are vegetarians and have accommodated them with no problem he must of done something to piss the brothers off

This article is an embarrassment to the job and more so to this disgrace of a firefighter. The article would have you believe that this is a dietary issue and that the other firefighters are making him feel like an outcast because of his dietary choices. I've never worked in that firehouse, but we all know what the firehouse kitchen is like. The kitchen is sacred in the firehouse. It's where a group of firefighters, working together for 24 hrs, come together as a unit, cook and eat. Everyone coming together is key to the cohesiveness of the firehouse. Not everyone likes what is put on the table every night and no one is forcing food down your throat. Plenty of people I work with don't eat shellfish or cheese and some guys ARE cutting down on their meat intake for health reasons. That's fine, but everyone still pays and everyone still cooks. If nothing else, it's a highly important symbolic activity. We have a rule, if you're "out on the meal" then that's it, you're out.
Don't be fooled by the NY Post rhetoric or this guys nonsense story. The trouble didn't start because one person decided to change their diet. It began when that one person decided that the whole firehouse and a sacred aspect of it's culture had to change for him. We drill together, we laugh together, we eat together and we put ourselves in harms way together. You can't shun one of those things and expect everyone to maintain the same level of respect for you.
If any serious credence is lent to this story, it will be one more slide down the tube for society.

There is a legal term, I think called "caveat superior" (My HS latin teacher would croak!) that says that if you are working for someone and do what they tell you, then HE is on the hook for what you do.
Sympathomedic, you are correct the name of the Doctrine is RESPONDEAT SUPERIOR (let the master respond) it is a legal doctrine holding "employers" liable for the wrongful acts of their agents (employees). It is also known as VICARIOUS LIABILITY; an employer is answerable for the tort (negligent acts) committed by employees. Two things must exist for this tort to hold up 1. A master-servant relationship must exist between the employer and employee. 2. The wrongful act of the employee MUST have occurred within the SCOPE of his employment. Once again get a hold of your department's policies and or SOP's and stay within the scope. PFD there are no stupid questions, be safe

Exactly. Once again, no one wants to take any personal responsibility. We can debate the merits of their system (again), but that fact remains, that's how things work down there. You can either choose to participate or choose to decline. But, you can't complain about it after the fact because you rolled the dice and came up short.

Convoluted? Seemed pretty concise and in-line to myself and a couple other members here. Wikipedia... Hardly... It's from taking the time to educate myself so when discussions like this take place I can at least articulate my stance with some level of insight and maturity instead of sounding like someone who's not getting his way and resorting to personal attacks.

I think its just a simple matter of everyone helping to achieve the same goal...helping someone in need, whats wrong with that? I believe your example is a bit far fetched and over dramatic, an electrician performing open heart surgery is no where near accurate enough to explain two state troopers answering a call of help from a local volunteer fire chief whom they probably know from working together in the field anyway and were all too happy to help. These guys held a hand line, outside the building, away from the heat and smoke, and allowed other trained firefighters to do the more important work in the hot zone such as overhaul, salvage, and final extinguishment.
I think we are all over reacting a little here...
Not for nothing, but in your previous post you were supporting the help offered you by the local PD when short handed, and now you are against it? Which side of the fence are you on here? LOL
I agree with these comments, we are all here for the same reasons, helping others in their time of need. If I was working a large fire and operating exterior lines for hours and was asked by a local cop or state trooper if I needed help holding the line I would gratefully accept their help and guide them as to what they could do to help.
On the flip side, If I saw a PD Officer getting attacked by a group of people, I would grab the nearest hard object and start swinging, or do WHATEVER I could to help them. I did just that one evening when working my FT EMS gig years ago. Our station is within minutes of the local SUNY campus, one evening we were jsut sitting down for dinner when the scanner came alive with a screaming SUNY cop saying he was being chased by a mob of college students through the quad and was calling for all available help from village PD and State Troopers. My partner and I jumped into our rig and started for the campus, lights and sirens blaring in hopes that the sirens would alert the students and make them run. When we arrived on scene, the SUNY cop was being held down and maced with his own mace by a group of 5 students. They saw us and ran away, giving us time to pull up next to the cop and pull him into our ambulance and drove away to safety before the kids realized it was only an EMS rig and tried to come and finish what they started.
We flushed his eyes and took him to the local ER for evaluation. What would have happened to this guy if we didnt show up? What if we just simply said "To hell with that, our pizza will get cold."???? Does any of the law enforcement gang here think we did wrong and wish to tell us to do our jobs and let them do theirs or did we do the right thing??
We work together, we have to, no one else will help.

Good job as per your post you knew the patient was having a subarachnoid hemorrhage with no real motor control, yet without securing the patients limbs you decided to attemp an IV. Do you understand the difference between an altered / incapacitated and lucid with intent. You might want to do a little homework on that one, as for getting "slugged" in the eye it is still better than a needle stick.

What does it matter? It matters to those of us who are Yorktown taxpayers, or have family members who are Yorktown taxpayers. It matters to those of us who want to see a capable, streamlined, consolidated emergency service system here in Westchester County instead of the conglomerate of districts and agencies that currently exist. Perhaps they didn't obtain or use this money illegally, but if they were able to save this money from their regular operating budget, then did they really need that money in the first place? Plus the taxpayers already said "No", we don't want you spending millions on a new firehouse, and that's just what they're doing, spending millions of taxpayers dollars on a new firehouse.
Have they done their homework? If so, then what is the benefit? As far as we know, there are no members that live in the vicinity of this new proposed firehouse. There is an extremely minimal number of calls in the Southern end of town. Millwood FD is a mile away, and to get to parts of the Yorktown District, they have to drive through Millwood's District. Where's the benefit? I'm failing to see it unless someone can offer up a good arguement as to the benefit of this project.
With that line of thinking, maybe every department should train and equip a HazMat Team, a Dive Team, a USAR Team, etc., because maybe one day they will be able to save a life. It's simply not fiscally responsible, that's why we utilize mutual aid from the County's TRT, Career Departments that have these capabilities, and other agencies (such as Yorktown's well established Water Rescue Team)to supplement our responses to these incidents. No different then Yorktown and Millwood entering a mutual aid agreement for the Southern end of Yorktown. Now I don't know if that option was ever explored, but if it wasn't, that's being financially irresponsible.
It's not criticizing. In addition to being Firefighters, Paramedics, EMT's, Police Officers, etc., we all have one thing in common; We're all Taxyapers! I never understood the mentality some of us have when it comes to finances. Are our functions important to the community? Of course. Should be be properly trained and equipped to respond to emergencies? Of course. But just because we provide a vital function for the communities we serve doesn't give us carte blanche to be financially irresponsible and think that the ideologies of budgeting don't apply to us.
Most of us aren't just going to "get over it" simply because you dictate we should. We question and discuss things because in the end, we are all looking to improve the "system" that exists here in Westchester, and many of us want to see the "home rule" and "fiefdom" way of doing things start to dissolve a bit, and this project has not only isolated the department from the taxpayers, it also ignores other alternatives for Fire Departments to consolidate services and save money for the taxpayers, while still providing high quality service.
Simply because other firefighters on this board are being reasonable and questioning the necessity of this project? So, I guess in the fire service everyone should just go along with anything and everything the other "brothers" are doing, regardless of how irresponsible or unnecessary it may be?

Okay, Master, we've given you three agencies so far... TransCare, Empress, and SeniorCare. You can keep on asking "Who are these agencies" over and over again, and the simple answer is that any agency, any day of the week, will hire the right person if they come along and can benefit the agency. Since you insinuated that I may be out of the loop because I asked if it was that hard to get an EMS job, I'm going to ask you another question.
Because you can't get hired, are you the problem or are the lack of agencies hiring the problem? I ask because it seems like there are plenty of places hiring (we already provided you with 3 places), but none of them want you.
If you can't get hired by a commercial agency, I highly doubt any municipal/hospital based/voluntary system is going to hire you. I don't know your background or how long you have been a medic, but typically the way it works is you get your ALS experience first as a medic working for a commercial provider. After some time working for a commercial provider, these other agencies will consider you for a medic position once you have some experience under your belt. If you can't get a good reference from your one and only EMS agency you were employed by (TransCare), why would any agency hire you without knowing anything about you, your experience as a paramedic, etc.? Like Comical115 said, EMS around here is a small community, and everyone knows everyone, if not directly, then through 1 or 2 degrees of separation.
I'm not trying to pick on you or put you down, but I'm trying to provide you with what may be a harsh reality. Once you make either a bad name or "no-name" for yourself by leaving places on bad terms, not having any ALS field experience, etc. it's going to make it more difficult to find an agency that is willing to hire you.
Since you asked, I am currently employed by Ossining. We just picked up 2 or 3 new per-diem medics, all of whom have extensive experience working in other systems.
