A tremendous loss to the fire service, but a well deserved retirement!

New Rochelle Fire Commissioner Raymond “Doc” Kiernan to retire

Posted by: Liz Anderson May 11, 2011

Raymond “Doc” Kiernan, the New Rochelle fire commissioner for the past 26 years, and a member of the department since 1966, will retire effective July 30, he announced today in a news release. The city plans to conduct a search for his successor.

“I certainly had a very rewarding career,” Kiernan said in a statement. “It was an honor to be head of the New Rochelle Fire Department for so long, and I look forward to new blood carrying it into the future.”

“Words cannot express the impact of the Commissioner’s decades of service to the city,” said City Manager Charles B. Strome, III in the announcement. “Doc will be severely missed by everyone who lives and works in New Rochelle. He truly is a public servant, who insured public safety for a long period of time.”

After the jump, read a Q-and-A we did with this city institution back in December
