Yonkers Raceway Police Department

12 posts in this topic

While wasting some time on Wikipedia, I noticed "Yonkers Raceway PD" designated as a law enforcement agency in Westchester County. I know much better then to trust Wikipedia, but I had I did some research and found they were an actual agency. I know other racing agencies in New York, such as the NYRA, employ peace officers that serve as security guards. But are the Yonkers Raceway PD real cops or just security guards? Does anyone have any info about the Yonkers Raceway Police? Are they affiliated with Yonkers PD? Are they armed?

Their Patch?

dont believe they are armed but do have Peace Officer powers under the CPL.

they are not part of Yonkers PD. employed solely by the Raceway. there's been ongoing arguments about using the term "Police" on their patch, similar to the arguments regarding NYC Homeless Police, Hospital Police, Sanitiation Police etc. dont think its going anywhere and I dont think the regulars frankly care enough to make a big stink about it.

From what I've seen, they are NYS certified peace officers, with the same police powers as a NYS correction officer. However, they are not certified police officers. While they make arrests and detain persons violating the law, and testify in court, they were sued by a woman who they detained, and she won. Not sure what the facts were regarding that case.

I do know that at one time, NYSP was in charge of policing the old VLU which later became the casino.

Years ago they were armed and had full police powers on the property. How that has changed since the Empire City Casino started I do not know.

Some NYRA officers in Saratoga carry firearms, But those who do carry are the "Senior Citizens" of the force and usually carry older revolvers in deteriorating holsters...

If you look on their patch, some say "Security" and others say "Peace Officer". During the summer racing season, they employ part-time security gaurds in adition to the peace officers. The more senior peace officers carry a small revolver and cuffs. This is their patrol vehicle and a video of their most famous peace officer:

So this guy carries a gun? He is not stopping any crime. He does not even seem to know what is going down.

As for Empire City, I think they are just Rent-A-Cops. No real power just kinda hold ya till Yonkers PD comes. If they go ahead with getting tables games and make it a full Casino then maybe some full power officers will be employed. Won't need singing old people

The one time I was at the raceway, I saw an older guy, dark blue uniform. Very old style patch that said Yonkers Raceway Police but he was unarmed.
