Outer Banks, NC Emergency Services Vehicles

21 posts in this topic

So I just finished up an incredible week out in the Outer Banks of North Carolina; for those of you who have been there, I really don't need to say more, and for those of you who have not been there, be sure to put it on your future vacation bucket list. I have never been one to take photos of apparatus, but with the help of my sister's new Nikon D60 camera, I figured I would give it a shot. I know some of the pictures didn't come out perfect, but I hope the majority are worth looking at.

Nice shots. If you get the chance next time, go check out Ocean Isle Beach. Nifty lil E-One Ladder down there.

nwpfdjr27,

Great pics man, thanks for sharing.

I have been vacationing to the Outer Banks since around 2005 and actually got married there in August of 2009 (in Corolla).

It is a beautiful place that has definitely grown each year. The Southern Shores/Duck/Corolla area is unique as Route 12 is your only way in and out.

I think Duck FD has just recently added career staffing to keep up with the call volume.

I love the pics of the Currituck County Sheriffs truck. Call me biased, but I also drive a Nissan Titan lol. They even have their unmarked ones which are also white (blue lights replace the fog lights).

We met an awesome Deputy Sheriff who was a true gentleman. It was while we were going down there to plan our wedding and we met him in a coffee shop. We were concerned with gettig some of our elderly guests onto the beach. He gave us his personal phone number and promised he would personally drive our guests onto the beach if need be.

People down there are just so relaxed and kind hearted.

I am currently vacationing in Sunset Beach, NC and will try and get some emergency service pictures to share.

Glad you enjoyed your OBX vacation and I will agree, it's a must go whether you're single, a couple or with a family.

Nice shots. I like that Duck Tower Ladder. I've never heard of a straight stick be referred to as a platform.

? What stick?

Think he means the ladder, no bucket but called a platform. Just clarification.

I understand that, but I only see two tower ladders...

You're right, I just noticed the bucket on the end. Apparently I missed that part. lol

Either way, I've never heard of a truck be referred to as a platform.

BFD1054 you are right about Duck FD, but the "staffing" is a little weird. The Chief, Asst. Chief, Captains, and Lieut. are all FFs employed by the town for year-round coverage. The remaining members are still all volunteer, but the paid officer staff helps ensure a response to all emergencies even in the off-peak season. Funny tid bit about that, Duck FD has been so successful in their T-shirt sales (I have 3 myself), they were able to purchase and outfit Brush 11, the red ford pickup I managed to shoot, in addition to subsidizing some of the cost for career staffing through the Town of Duck.... Not to shabby. Also, the Sheriff cars are very sharp, I managed to see an undercover Titan on my way out at a traffic stop, sorry I didnt grab a photo. My personal favorites were the slick-top Jeep Cherokees they recently replaced over the past few years.

Sorry about the photo peterose313, Platform 61 is a rear-mount tower ladder, the bucket did get kind of cut off in the pictures.

One thing I found most interesting about EMS operations, especially in Corolla (the northern most point on Route 12), is the relative necessity for helicopter intervention. The closest hospital to Corolla is 35 miles away, an ambulance ride that takes almost an hour depending on weather and traffic. As a result, any type of moderate illness or injury is usually flown into Norfolk, VA, including strokes, cardiac patients with any significant history, and trauma patients. A very different EMS experience than what I'm used to.

I love the outer banks. I've been vacationing there since I was a little kind. I am also an avid collector of the duck shirts. Everytime I wear one I get asked if duck is a real place lol. My department recently purchased southern shores old brush truck ( brush 12 I believe). I will snap some pics and post them and try to show our before and after.

Not your fault, I just didn't look close enough. I was browsing quickly and didn't look at all the detail.

Nice shots though!

If you look at the full side view of the Duck TL it looks like the rear axles have only single tires on them. I have been noticing this trend on tractor trailers (ten wheel "eighteen wheeler") and even transit mix trucks (cement mixers). I was wondering when this trend would start with fire apparatus. I have some pictures which I will try to post in a new thread hopefully this weekend when I finish a project at work.

Sigh,....this is the first time after 5 straight years I didn't make it OBX!

A little side note about the Currituck County medics and Corolla FD: in 2009, my friend's mother suffered a stroke while we were down there. The medics were top-notch. One of the medics was also a volunteer at Corolla. Seeing as we had 4 young kids with our group, and knowing how much time the adults were going to spend at Outer Banks Hospital, he gave my friend his cell number and offered to give the kids a tour. Long story short, as I was one of the adults without kids, I made contact with him. He was a consummate professional! Great with the kids, he gave us all a ride in the pumper and let the older kids play with the 1 3/4 (with his and my help, BTW). We talked shop and he gave us great advice on surf fishing. I have to look for my letter to the chief to get his name, but from what I've heard from fellow travelers to OBX, that's the normal mindset.

This is a pic I took of Corolla's platform in June, 2007. Looks like it was called Platform 637 then, also looks like they've updated the lights on it since then.
