Fires In Westchester That Required Large Amounts Of Water

78 posts in this topic

Your lucky Career Depts. follow the Standards never mind Volunteer Depts. Some Career Depts. should first worry about changing and raising their Standards to get appointed to the Job. You can have all the Standards you want but toss them out the window if 'Incompetence" is throughout your Dept.. and these Standards aren't followed.

Gee....and here I thought that Pat Kelly combined ALL the departments in Westchester County. Atleast that is what he told Fla. when submitting his resume.

FirNaTine is correct when standards and common sense are thrown out the window or politics enters, when vetting new canidates to career fire departments. It is important not to compromise as it is not fair to the F.D-citizens and the candidate' Poor hirings will bite you in the arse down the road sooner or later. All believe in giving folks a chance and perhaps a second chance but not in Public Safety where the stakes are too high.

Typical Emtbravo this post should have been closed already cause it's so far off topic. All of this career and volunteer needs to stop. What is Emtbravo motto "working together winning together". This post is so far off .does career Department's in Westchester have their problems yes do have some of the same issues as the volunteers Such as manpower. You got a lot of taxpayers that view career firefighters as greedy Workers because of high pensions is this a problem with the careers side yes. How about Bengal tiger fire You had North White Plains engine covering the city of White plains. I have heard a few times of West Harrison tower ladder standing by White Plains quarters headquarter. White Plains, Purchase and West Harrison working together on I-287 to get a job done. when Purchase had the Full Moon fire White Plains Ladder was their at purchases headquarters on standby. How was Fairview working with Elmsford or Valhalla all of these are Emtbravo motto "working together winning together" . Seems that a couple member all always "putting down volunteer firefighter" in Westchester there are many professional volunteer firefighters which take it serious as will as Department. To The administrators of Emtbravo close out this topic. Been a member on the site since 2006 I have seen a big downfall of the site or a few months now. Seems like every other post is career versus volunteer. It seem that the site lost member that you to post a lot on here. That the rule are not followed. Let's work together

Been preaching exactly this for yrs. Snotty! 100% correct and Ive seen it first hand on numerous occassions come back to bite a Dept. and unfortunately the taxpayers they swore to protect right in their arses! Unfortunately once such a great Job filled with "Tradition" has become nothing more then that. A Job! JMO

OK -Back on topic-How about the huge fire in White Plains, when a propane tractor trailer struck a bridge abutment and exploded setting structure fires on both sides of the interstate in residential neighborhoods, now that produced enough fire for everyone, sometime in the 90's

A fire that certainly keeps with our topic was the " Pelham Manor Invitational " hosted by their newly minted Fire Chief.

This fire was in a large "L" shaped non fire proof, multiple dwelling of six stories on Boston Post Road near the New Rochelle Border.

The fire got into the top floor and a very deep unbroken cockloft, initial efforts where hampered by wooden roof decking built over the original roof to form a large patio, for penthouse dwellers, which frustrated initial venting and quick trench cutting. The reason I mention this, as this is going to become more common as people start to use roofs for leisure purposes and the increase of "green buildings" which will have gardens etc. on the roof. Not only causing venting headaches but tremendous weight not planned on, adding to an early collapse.

But the "Pelham Manor Invitational", was just that, few Westchester Departments were not present and FDNY sent a full third alarm mutual aid assignment. I wonder how many different hose threads were involved ?

Pelham Manor had a Fire Alarm Ordinance in effect prior to the "Invitational". At the time of the fire there was a fire alarm system through out the fire building. The alarm activated and the occupants were alerted allowing for rapid evacuation of the building.

A Snotty quote from that Pelham Manor job; "A FDNY third alarm assignment, marching up Boston Post Road with pike poles reminded him of the movie Sparticus.

How many fires have we all been to where the amount of water needed wasn't the issue - it was the lack of proper application of it?

No need to call out certain incidents, but we all know they exist...
