Numerous Tones For A Bee Sting?

14 posts in this topic

Did anyone else hear all those tones go out for a bee sting at Graham Hills Park in Pleasantville? Numerous fire departments and EMS agencies were sent, including Battalion 11? Is there something I am missing LOL?

Don't leave us in suspense. Was it a bee sting or a bee swarm with multiple victims?

I doubt it was serious. The 60 Control dispatcher was outright laughing while dispatching the call and didn't give any further information other then a "bee sting". It would have been nice to know when dispatched if there was an anaphylactic reaction, multiple victims, any hazards to responder like a swarm, and the such.

This is a normal response for a missing person or person injured on one of the trails. Also, there has been some arguing over the years of which jurisdiction the parking lot falls into.

You missed the planning meeting when this response protocol was put into play for all emergencies in the park. The parking lot is HFD's jurisdiction. TFD has the emergency access point at the SMP/Marble Ave and PFD has the access point off Foshay Ave.

So if this was a bee sting in the parking lot, why wasn't it just an HFD response with an ambulance (and maybe a utility)? Or is Mount Pleasant requiring the large response for everything in the park? It just seems to me that too many responders were dispatched for what should be a simple response.

Too often, locations are given that aren't accurate, so it was determined that's it's best to start out the troops and cancel them if needed rather then request them after the fact.

Hoping the dispatcher was laughing at something other than the caller. I know two people (they're a father daughter combo) that will most likely die if ever stung again and they don't have their epi pen. Someone may have been frantically calling over a bee sting but if it was due to family history of escalating anaphylaxis then they hysteria may be warranted not laughable.

A blanket response policy for "all" calls at a park or anywhere else is overkill. This wasn't a hiker lost on a trail. They stated they were in the parking lot, not a lot of confusion there. Is it really necessary to send three fire departments, two EMS units, and two PD's to a medical emergency at a known location?

Wow!

The "Are you f***ing kidding me" over 46.26 was inappropriate. Funny, but inappropriate.

If these agencies agreed on a protocol based system, such as EMD, that integrated with the CAD recommending units in a centralized dispatch system, it could have been quickly determined what level of response was needed by ruling out several factors.

Let's not also forget the burden that a response like this places on a dispatcher(s), especially when having to call several other dispatch centers to get the units not dispatched by 60 Control started out, and then cancelled.

We have one small area of town where we were getting Two EMS agencies and Two Fire Departments on all medical calls. This was because it was in Stamford, but in the far Northwest corner along the Greenwich and NY state borders. The roads to get there from Stamford are narrow and contain many turns making response times slow. So as a result all fire calls in that area got Long Ridge Fire and Banksville, NY Fire. All medical calls got Stamford EMS, Greenwich EMS and Long Ridge Fire and Banksville Fire. Such responses while likely overkill in most cases are driven by the nature of the area being served. The first arriving unit does a size up and cancels what they do not need.
