NYPD Traffic agents seeing red over uniform color change

8 posts in this topic

Interesting. On one side, per the comments provided in the article, I can see how being mistaken as a police officer could be beneficial to personal safety in some types of situations for these specific agents as described, and also create perception of more police presence, but in a lot of instances wouldn't you NOT want to be mistaken as officer, both from a public and sworn perspective?

The NYPD plans to replace the department-blue uniforms used by some of its traffic enforcement agents — a move that has provoked a firestorm of opposition from workers who claim the distinctive new duds will imperil their safety, The Post has learned.

Is it the same green as the old EMS uniforms (and sanitation and parks are or were green too, no)?

The old NYC EMS green was a different (and better IMHO) green than what Sanitation wears.

Interestingly enough in Stamford the same change was made and the exact opposite reasoning was sited. Stamford has a long history of divisive uniform colors (which is more or less coming to an end), but our violations officers used to wear the same light blue shirts and dark blue pants as the special police officers they worked along side. The issue was brought up that someone looking to hurt a police officer would think they were police officers and since they were unarmed they would be more at risk. They now wear tan shirts and green pants, as do our animal control officers.

You would think, that in light of the recent violence toward police officers around the Country, that they would not want to wear a police style uniform. They do not carry weapons, so when they are mistaken for police officers, they have no way to defend themselves. Also, they used to drive difference colored cars than the NYPD. Now, they drive the same colored cars too. It can be confusing to motorists who think that a vehicle with red lights behind it is a police car, when in fact, it is not.

It's a safety issue for NYPD Traffic & School Safety Agents to wear the same uniform

as NYPD Police Officers. Same for the Auxiliary Police.

They all ride around in vehicles that look like NYPD RMP's as Trauma74 mentioned.

I know about a year or so ago the NYPD added "POLICE" to the hoods and trunks off all RMP's

where before it just said "NYPD"

Other way around. They added nypd to the car. They all said police but from front or back ,you couldn't see what agency it was.

Take a look at some old photos.

They think they are police officers hence why they want to keep the uniform. This will all change when they get mistaken for a real cop and get seriously hurt or killed.

Do you know if they have peace officer status?
