*Spy Shot* North White Plains FD Utility 147

15 posts in this topic

North White Plains has acquired, from US Army Surplus at Fort Drum, a 1997 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV Cargo Truck M-1078. It is in excellent mechanical condition, is 4x4, has an Allison automatic transmission, and has a variety of useful features.

It will be designated "Utility 147". It was delivered last Friday. Also, they will be taking delivery of a 1993 Freightliner/Saulsbury medium duty rescue that previously saw service in Centereach NY in the next week to replace the former Rescue 33, which has been disposed of. Stay tuned to EMTBravo for photos of the new Rescue 33.

FYI

Utility 147 was acquired to be a prime mover for our support trailer.

It is also going to be a driver training vehicle for any one starting to train for an MPO position.

Right now only 21 year members can train to be a MPO.

This is intended to allow 18 year old drivers the ability to start training on a larger vehicle

without damaging a front line response unit.

Once properly outfitted, at the discretion of the Chief, it may be used for storm duty.

Original cost on this vehicle was over, $105,000.00

We acquired through surplus for $3700.00

Stay Safe

Once properly outfitted, at the discretion of the Chief, it may be used for storm duty.

It will also be outfitted with non-emergency equipment, such as cones, barricades, pump-out equipment, and possibly brush fire equipment for large events. The SOP's are being created for the vehicle, and we will use it as our needs fit. This is definitely a great addition to out fleet, and it will more than definitely be put to good use.

To touch on the driver training thing....Most vollies start driver training on vehicles that are MUCH larger than anything they have driven before. Imagine only driving a Honda Civic for years (and, no, I'm not mocking the small, economical car) and being thrown into the driver seat of a 30 foot long fire truck. It makes sense that we start driver training with a vehicle that costs us under $4k and is already a little beat up, allowing the new driver to gain experience with a larger vehicle, rather than throwing the new driver in the front seat of a rig that costs $500k+.

Now, that rescue.....COMING SOON!

Is this the rescue they are getting?

Nope. They are getting this one:

That is a bit too big for North White Plains FD, especially considering the fact that surrounding towns all have rescue trucks.

That thing is too big for Centereach too....but shhhhhhh, don't tell anyone. They're surrounded by rescues too, but we all know that L.I. story....

Do they really need this utility rig

Every fire department should have a utility IMHO.

These days there is so much going on in the fire service that does not require a engine, ladder or rescue.

So if you can get a HD vehicle like this surplus. Why not? Great Job! thinking outside the box and saving tax payer $$$.

The FMTV's are great vehicles, until you need to get parts... Depending on the part, you may have an easy time, or a very hard time...
