MOUNT VERNON - The city will send 11 recruits to the fire academy next month even though there's only enough money in the 2016 budget for six.

Mayor Richard Thomas said understaffing in the Fire Department requires dipping into the city's reserve funds for the approximately $300,000 needed for the additional firefighters.

It's great that the mayor is trying to do the best he can with what he has on his plate. What sucks though is that the city council seems to be not interested in the safety of the community and rather be saving money while watching their city burn and having other firefighters from other communities risk their lives to fight them. No offense, but what a bunch of ignorant jerks. Also, the YFD Union President has a point, even though adding these guys might and 20 sounds like a nice number to have per shift, still isn't enough I think for a city that deals with what they deal with.

Hope the new Mayor and Fire Commissioner work. on background checks, so as not to hire problems, Remember past actions are the best indicator of future actions. MVFD needs eleven new firefighters not eleven new problems.
