The Greenburgh Town Board unanimously voted to create motorcycle unit in our police department at our last Town Board meeting this past Wednesday.

The department is responsible for enforcement of New York State vehicle and traffic laws. We believe that the   4 motorcycles we will purchase will enable the police department to improve enforcement and to reach streets that are difficult to reach in a quickly. We're proud of our police department. This unit will enable the police to do an even better job of serving our needs.

Watch Captain George Weisner's presentation to the Town Board explaining the need.

Wow! How will the officers be selected? Will they attend NYPD or Yonkers Motorcycle school? Sounds awesome, but will they really be used to patrol or respond much at all?

The City of Savannah just recently announced the formation of a motorcycle squad.  Is this becoming a trend?

Older of us will remember Officer Tom Carr of the Ossining Village PD who always led off the parades on his PD Harley.

Town of Warwick PD has had a motorcycle unit for quite a while now and it seems to work well for them. They have three motorcycles and as soon as the weather is nice enough, they usually have one or two guys a shift on the cycles. It's not a full time unit, so anyone in the department can go to their motorcycle school, they do their own, and I've seen all ranks riding the motorcycles, including the chief.

A lot of PD's in Westchester have motorcycles already.  Yonkers, White Plains, Harrison, County, Ossining, Mamaroneck (not sure which one), Tuckahoe may, and even the State Police have them (although you seldom see them down here).

Not sure what the big deal is.
