Los Angeles City FD's New Heavy Rescue 56 (Photos)

6 posts in this topic

Last Sunday,  I had the opportunity to look over and photograph this unique and impressive rig!

2016 Peterbilt 567  with a Century 50 Ton Rotator (can be remote controlled) and body, 10KW generator, and air compressor syste,m, amongst many other customizations.

This rig replaces a similar rig, a 2003 Peterbilt/Century, which will become a fully equipped spare. The spare is replacing the former spare, which will be kept in the USAR caches.

Thanks again to the crew at Station 56 and the HR56 guys!

For more than 130 years, your ‪#‎LosAngeles‬ ‪#‎FireDepartment‬ has been called to often dramatic and challenging rescues. Since 1948, the LAFD has maintained in service, a series of Heavy Utility / Heavy Rescue vehicles designed to expertly manage uncommon scenarios at which life, property and the environment hang in the balance.

Built to LAFD specification and resembling heavy-duty tow trucks built on Kenworth, Mack, Crown and now Peterbilt chassis, they have been a constant part of our fleet, seeing around-the-clock citywide emergency service for nearly 70 years................

The LAFD operates this specialized tow-truck as a "Heavy Rescue" out of Fire Station 56 in the LA community of Silverlake. This mammoth apparatus is useful in a wide variety of situations, including but not limited to righting overturned big rigs, pulling crushed vehicles apart, and lifting heavy objects. One of the things the firefighters who operate the Heavy-U (the rig used to be called a Heavy Utility), is their district. "What's my first-in district?" a firefighter from 56s asks. "What is it?" you reply. He smiles and says, "the city."

Did You Know? Most LAFD promotions, transfers and transitions happen on Sundays.

Those with a keen eye will note that this Sunday, April 2, 2017, after more than a quarter century of being housed at Station 56 in Silver Lake, our single LAFD Heavy Rescue unit will be moving to its new home at Fire Station 3 in downtown Los Angeles, where it will now be known as "Heavy Rescue 3".
