THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: April 11, 2005)
YONKERS — Fourteen families are homeless after a 5-alarm fire destroyed three multi-family houses early today. Eleven firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The fire was reported at 2:51 a.m. at 140 Waverly St., Yonkers Fire Commissioner Anthony Pagano said. It spread to 138 and 142 Waverly, engulfing all three wood-frame buildings.
The residents escaped and some 90 firefighters from four departments battled the blaze, which was declared under control at 6:42 a.m. Two of the buildings were reported on the verge of collapse and will have to be demolished.
Yonkers firefighters were joined by firefighters from New Rochelle, Greenville and Mount Vernon.
Eleven firefighters were treated at three hospitals, then released.
Pagano said the cause appeared to be accidential, but authorities were still investigating

I was a member of Cataract Hose in '79 and '80

I would just like to state that Sunday's drill was handled very professionally. They had multiple NYS instructors there. There were dedicated instructors for the first engine company to enter the building, one for the second engine company to enter (if necessary), one for the truck company detailed to do entry and a search. There was a safety line also charged with that crew ready to go at all times. All teams had a mandatory walk through of the building prior to doing their evolutions so all egress points were identified. When our team did the "first engine" evolution, our instructor was literally in my ear the entire time giving me tips as we worked. My hat is tipped to BHFD for running a great drill which gave many people a chance to train under these circumstances.

Reportedly 3 vehicles on fire in lot. Tanker 1 also responded.

The report of the bus being empty did come over the air. That was possibly due to the fact that two busses were at the scene upon our arrival. One was in fact empty (but not involved in the incident). I am not sure if the medic was on board the bus as I never boarded the bus due to there being plenty of personnel on hand to assist.

2141 was also at the scene as water source chief

I rode T-1 to the scene. We pumped off approximately half a tank load. I don't believe any further water was needed from CFFD Tanker or Yorktown Tanker. They knocked this fire down very quickly!
