  1. I was just reading about how the LACoFD had to recall some of their seasonal firefighter to battle the blazes there. But what I was really wondering, and couldn’t find on their website, what policies are out there pertaining to us east coast guys going out there and helping out on the line? I realize that there are some inherent problems in sending a guy to do something they might not be trained in doing (fighting wildfires) out to California for a week. But I cant imagine that some of the city departments are running at full capacity since they must be pulling some of their guys to help out on the line; so maybe that’s a possibility. Just wondering your opinions and if you have any info perhaps.

  2. Again, another accident and fatality caused by elderly drivers, and again I have to wonder why any government, State or Federal, is not doing anything to combat it. I wonder if there is even anything on the docket in Congress about this. I mean seriously, when you get to the age where you mistake the gas for the break IT’S TIME TO STOP DRIVING!!! I understand the elderly wanting to stay independent and all but not only are they putting themselves at risk they are risking other lives as well. Maybe Florida will get fed up will everyone driving into farm stands every year and start something that other states will follow. Until then I’m going to watch out for those damn Oldsmobiles!

  3. In articles regarding Phoenix's experience with it, they have noticed no change in time that it takes to get to work.  How many of you can get out of the cab with an SCBA on and not have to adjust it so it sits properly anyway?  For departments that members arrive in POV's does it affect you?  Probably not.

SCBA in the cab or no SCBA's shouldn't matter in regard to seat belt use.  If you don't use it, then plain and simple your a (*&(&hole.  Many you know my stance on this and how I feel we can get compliance with such.

I think that it is better to have the pack on, even if its not adjusted properly, because its faster to adjust it right when you get off then to have to put it on and adjust. The thing is that a firefighter has time when traveling to the alarm to put on the pack.

But I agree with you on seat belts it is defiantly something that needs to be used all the time but is not.

  4. I agree with CFD320, but have more to add.  One thing I HATE is "it's his/her TURN"!  What does that mean?  Just because the person has a certain amount of time in the dept, regardless of ability, training, etc, they should be officer?!  That burns me sooo much!  Often I see people who have put years of service in, but those years are wasted basically.  There are people who have excelled more, and have more experience, with only 5 or 6 years in the dept.

I agree, in my department we have a second LT. who has only been in the department for 3 years, but what he lacks in time he gained in experience and commitment from coming to almost every single call and every single drill and meeting. In my view, if the person puts the time in and knows his stuff, why cant he/she be chief. Elections should not be based on popularity; it needs to be based on leadership and knowledge.
