  1. This is not nearly as bad as when Cablevision kept eliminating channels from basic cable. On several different occasions 10+ channels were removed and replaced with a message basically telling people to move to Digital Cable or say goodbye to these channels. Once it reached the point that there were basically no channels we moved to Fios (and saved a ton of money in the process) and haven't looked back.

  2. Most likely, I'm also basing that assumption on GM's past history with dupicating vehicles... like the 70's GM vehicles, the Nova, Chevelle, GTO, buick skylark and century, all basically the same, different cosmetics, different engine variations, etc. I recall my father telling me about the brand new chevelle he picked up at the factory that had nova badging on the dash, lol

Quite true. In this case, the Caprice is sharing architecture with the Pontiac G8, Chevy Camaro, and various Holden/Vauxhall products from overseas. The Impala shares architecture with the Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, and the Buick LaCrosse through the 2009 model year.

  3. Maybe so, but since every single one of us on this board owns a piece of GM, we should all be outraged at this colossal waste of our tax dollars. It's not a new car and I highly doubt that they'll be able to turn a profit. Even if they use much of the same tooling as the former Pontiac line, it's counter-productive; Pontiac doesn't exist anymore for a specific reason, so re-badging the same tired old POS isn't going to help Chevrolet gain any kind of foothold in the marketspace left by the Crown Vic's exit. It's nice to see that after all the months of crying about how they needed taxpayer assistance, the same lack of creative ideas and poor engineering are still running rampant throughout General Motors.

The car is actually a carbon copy of the Holden Commodore and Chevy Caprice (sold in Middle East and Asia IIRC). The car will be built on the line already producing these models. There is very little cost associated with developing and producing this car (i.e. very nice profit).

As for the Pontiac G8, the reason why it's no longer being produced is much more complex than it being a tired old POS. GM needed to become leaner and one of the ways to do that was to eliminate brands. Pontiac was among the slower-selling and more redundant brands (the reasons behind which require a whole other conversation) and thus the decision was made to eliminate it. The G8 was in fact well received by the automotive press and had a lot of potential. It couldn't, however, justify keeping Pontiac alive.

  4. To add on to what FFFORD said, the dealership may be invoking the part of the warranty contract that states the warranty will be voided if the vehicle is used in emergency purposes or if modified in a certain way. This typically wouldn't apply to a vehicle equipped with a police/special services prep package (depending on the manufacturer). This could also apply to work done by anyone other than the Original Equipment Manufacturer. Was the vehicle repainted by the up-fitter? If not (and assuming the vehicle is equipped with the appropriate prep package), this is a case of the dealer using the aforementioned points in the warranty to skirt their responsibilities, which is something that should be addressed either with upper level dealer management or Ford Fleet Customer Service.

  5. Although it's not the Crown Vic, Dodge Charger, or Chevrolet Impala (does Chevy still offer the Impala police package?), many agencies use vehicles that aren't police package. I see you point, and agree it's not under the hood a police package, but may be suited well for some uses. From what I hear, Fod is watching to see how this does and possibly release a police package version.

    GM still offers the Impala:

Rumor has it the Camaro is coming as well.

I would be curious as to whether doing such an upfit on a vehicle for which it was not intended would void the manufacturer's warranty. Maybe Warnock is agreeing to honor any warranty claims that Ford won't.

  6. Day before Oakland shooting rampage, gunman was linked to rape case [uPDATED]

    8:17 AM | March 24, 2009

A day before a parolee killed four Oakland police officers, detectives in the city matched the man's DNA to an unsolved rape case, authorities said.

This after his family came out saying he was "not a monster."

    RIP to the Officers killed

  7. DCFD naturally covers all of DC - including government offices (to the best of my knowledge). I saw a few pictures of FBI Paramedics (Special Agents who are part of the HRT/SWAT who are also Paramedics) as part of the various details - maybe one of those guys got things going and then care was transfered to DCFD? Not sure.

He was transported by ambulance, though - apparently conscious, alert and oriented.

There were also Secret Service ambulances present that look something like this:

I don't know who transported him, though.

Best of luck to President Obama and the new administration as well as this great nation-we certainly need it.
