Yet another reason I'm glad to be a GM man.

In the Olivia Riner Thornwood case, it was the baby's older sister's boyfriend who was the shady character. I recall seeing video of the fire, an outdoor scene with fire on the outside wall nowhere near a basement window. You're right. I thought it was a young male "relative". The DA's zeal to nail that young girl was baseless (it was Pirro, right?), I was embarrassed to be a Westchester resident.

Just some pics of where I'm at in building Ladder 73 and Engine 313. These are 1:64 scale, and will be mostly hand made. They should go along nicely with Code 3's Ladder 71.

Fascinating! Thanks for posting that! =D>

After going through the news coverage, I guess we can breathe a collective sigh of relief that this one wasn't much, much worse than it was. I know that's no consolation for the dead lady's family.
It's amazing that almost everyone escaped relatively uninjured, and that the FF's themselves sustained only minor injuries. I am thankful for that.
What is also amazing is that a relatively modern building (early '60's?) of this size could burn so quickly and easily in the face of a such a large and prompt response. I have never seen anything like this. I believe the building was also SP'd and sprinklered? I have witnessed fires in buildings of similar construction, and they were contained to a single unit (perhaps involving the adjacent or above unit also) until they were knocked down.
Any discussion on this?

Initially, I kind of had the same reaction. Then I realized that those animals are all that woman had left. Kudos to the Yonkers FF's who brought them out, that was a real act of kindness.

I used to live just up the street from this building, on Highland Ave. There have been a few good jobs in Jefferson Terrace over the years. I remember one about a year or two after it was built, took out three apartments.

Hello,
My name is Steve. I am a past member of the New Hackensack VFD,
and I am an Electrical Engineer by trade. I would like to get back into my local FD again.
I also serve on the Indian Point Nuclear Station Fire Brigade.
Basically, I am what you could call a "buff", although my principal interest is in modeling fire apparatus rather than photographing them.

I remember the Thornwood fire and the accused Swiss Nanny. Her name was Olivia Reiner. The DA tried to railroad her for the crime, and she was put on trial. She was aquitted because she was INNOCENT. Suspicion later fell on the stepson of the baby's father. He had plenty of motive, and by all accounts was enough of a low-life to do such a thing. Nobody was ever convicted for that arson murder.

I grew up in SW Yonkers and saw beaucoup fires, especially down in "The Hollow" and up on "Nodine Hill". Had a pretty good one right in my own building too.
By far, the most intense fire I have ever witnessed was in early June of 1976. It started in the "Rockbottoms" store on South Broadway in Yonkers. I was on my way home from school and stopped to watch as the first YFD units pulled up. A light smoke condition, no working fire visible until they vented the roof-then all hell broke loose. The heat was so intense from the sudden geyser of flame that the Police began pushing people away who were watching from across the street. Next, Little Darling's juvenile store went up, followed by Jaylen's arts and crafts. Sultan Oldsmobile began emptying it's showroom of the new '76 models, and it's service department of customer's cars. The fire never got to the dealership, but you could see the panic on their faces.

I don't claim to be an expert, but I gather that E-One has come a very long way and is tough to beat. I understand that Pierce is another "premium" maker.

Does anyone remember the truck stop on Central Ave north near Midland Ave in Yonkers? DEADLY chili, great big fat chili dogs. Two of those and an ice-cold pitcher of Bud....man, that's a great memory.
