Bronx man fatally shot in face in Mount Vernon

    By GLENN BLAIN

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: September 16, 2007)

MOUNT VERNON - A 28-year-old Bronx man was fatally shot in the face yesterday morning, the city's seventh homicide this year.

Police found the body of Jawara Miller on the sidewalk in front of 251 W. First St. shortly before 5 a.m. Officers had been dispatched to the commercial strip between 15th and 16th streets after a 911 call about a man down in the street.

Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong said yesterday that it was too early in the investigation to discuss a motive for the shooting.

At the spot yesterday afternoon where Miller's body was found, candles and an arrangement of blue and white flowers had been placed on the sidewalk.

Abdul Almontaser, a clerk at the 249 Deli & Grocery, next to the site, said he arrived to work at 9 a.m. to find several police officers on the sidewalk. The body had been removed.

"It's crazy," Almontaser said. "We weren't expecting something like this to happen."

While the area is largely commercial, apartments are located above the storefronts on both sides of First Street.

Chong said he hoped that people living in those apartments might have heard something and would contact the police.

People with information about the case are asked to call detectives at 914-665-2510 or the department's 24-hour tip line, 914-665-2588.

"Any tips would be greatly appreciated," and calls will be kept confidential, Chong said.

Police are still working to solve last month's execution-style slaying of 56-year-old Vernon Bagby. Police think Bagby, who was shot in the temple just after he got into his car at Eighth Avenue and Fifth Street, was killed because of a personal grudge.

  2. Hey that cop sounds familiar....hmmm....Great job fellas!

Couple rescued after boat capsizes near Tappan Zee Bridge

    By JANE LERNER

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: September 16, 2007)

NYACK - A Bronxville man celebrating his birthday and a female companion were pulled unhurt from the Hudson River yesterday afternoon after their sailboat capsized just north of the Tappan Zee bridge, police said.

The 18-foot vessel that launched from Nyack capsized in rough waters shortly before 4 p.m., police said.

After receiving a report from another boater that two people were clinging to the hull of an overturned sailboat, emergency boats from the Westchester County police, Yonkers police and Rockland Sheriff's Patrol went to the scene.

Two Westchester County Marine Unit officers, Detectives C.J. Westbrook and Thomas Camerino, spotted the couple opposite the Kingsland Point lighthouse.

The Westchester officers tossed a life ring to the female in the water and three Yonkers officers - Sgt. Richard Ackey, Officer Michael Messer and Officer Fred Quinones - threw a life ring to the man.Ken Thompson, who turned 43 yesterday, told police that the boat capsized after a sudden wind gust.

He and Colleen Wittrop, 36, also of Bronxville, declined medical attention. They were in the 70-degree water for 15 to 20 minutes, police said.

Both were taken to shore on the Nyack side of the river.

A towboat recovered the vessel and also brought it to the Nyack marina, police said.

  4. What are you hearing? If you are getting a whining noise when you start or accelerate the you ran the power cable too close to the amp cable from your head. Your getting interference from the alternator. Try running one cable on one side of the car and the other on the other side. Or buy better cables that have more insulation.

  6. In addition, police said they will be notifying federal immigration officials because it appears that the majority of those arrested are undocumented immigrants from Central or South America.

Lock them up and send them back home. Kinda funny how you get in more trouble for solicting a BJ, then for illegaly infiltrating our national borders....hmmm!!!!!

  7. there is a slight change with the ic502, that would have been nice if it carried over from the regular nextel phones. and it was the ability to use the direct connect without having to flip open the phone by pushing the stop button and scrolling using the volume buttons. other than that, i love my ic502. mine came with the extended battery, and my charge lasts for 3 days.

i only wish that you could hear your ringer volume when you use the outside buttons.

    CSF,

Those are my only real complaints also. Opening the phone everytime stinks....but they fixed that on the ic902.

  8. Don,

I do believe the notice you are talking about stated, that they were going to phase out the Iden network in the consumer market over the next 5-10yrs as the CDMA and newer technologies become capable of handling the direct-connect service. The Iden network then is supposed to be used by Government and Private organizations (accounts). Iden is superior for the "walkie-talkie" as compared to CDMA. That is why the Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint "walkie-talkies" never became popular. Iden will be around for a while still.

  9. Ok you already have got most of the info. The 902 is wayyyyyy better than the 502. I have the 502 for only one reason...it was free (Called to tell them I hate Sprint and was going to leave. They gave me a free phone and two months of free service.). As for the battery life problem, if you get the newer powersource battery (the fatter one) I find myself lasting a day or two between charges. On busy days i still get a full day of talk time before it starts to beep.
