IMO a lift assist 9X out of 10 is exactly how it sounds. That being said, unless there is trauma or underlying medical concerns it is a "good intent" call. I know some agencies allow attendants or other members w/o medicalTraining to move and lift patients. If in fact it is just helping a elderly person back into bed, can't FD or PD assist?

My girlfriend's school sent out an email warning everybody of the dangers. This stuff just exploded. Its everywhere now... Craziness. Sounds pretty disgusting to me. I'll stick with my Jameson and beer thanks very much.

AMEN to that!! The bottom line is alcohol will always be marketed towards underage drinkers which is a sad thing. Alcohol/Caffeine combo drinks have been around forever whether it's a traditional coffee cocktail or Red Bull/Vodka. I love an Irish Coffee myself once in a while.. But marketing these extra potent drinks towards kids is unacceptable! What's sickening is the govenment's "attack the distributor/raise awareness approach!" As so many have said, extra exposure is only helping the distributor in the long run.. Personally I believe, the money is much more effective through enforcement.. Give the $ to Law Enforcement so they can stop these bodegas or gas stations from selling it to underage kids!!!! Putting the fear of massive fines and criminal charges into peoples heads will make them think twice before contributing to this epidemic!!!

2. Yup, older style Knox Box, does not require radio activation. Less accountability, but more reliable then radio (we have many issues opening boxes for units around the county at work).

Time is relative.

What I do in my first two years in the department isn't the same as what you might do. You may spend your time taking classes, while I keep going to hands on drills and respond to 100 calls compared to your 10 calls. On election night, it's usually a popularity contest, and the best candidate doesn't always prevail.

Make it tougher to move up.

- Make it 5 years in the department to move up.

- Require XXX amount of classroom training hours.

- Require XXX amount of hands on training hours.

- Require a higher % of call response then the average member.

- Put them to the test at drills and calls, make them make decisions!

I believe that training lays the foundation, while experience and ability builds the house. I can sit in 100 hours of class on how to throw a ground ladder, but until I do it and master it, it's all just speculation as to what I can do.

Senior members and officers MUST mentor the younger guys to seek out the future leadership. All of us can look around our firehouse and see who is officer material, and who should be left on the apron every call.

I agree with your ideas 100%!!! I believe the best way to find who is officer material is combination of experience, training and personal skill. When I say "personal skills," I mean communication, leadership, common sense, etc.. Unfortunately, one can have 3000 hrs of classroom and training and yet respond to a call with helmet on backwards!!!

This just made my day! Hands down the most entertaining cop/crime series since The Shield. I was so disappointed when I head it was cancelled. It baffles me how shows such as "castle" generate so much buzz and success!!!
