  1. Eagle Emblems - Sal is a great guy.

He has made the 9-11 Memorial patch for Sam Oitice of Ladder 4 & Peekskill E134 and he is currently supplying the Sam Oitice Heroes Remembered Memorial committee with a new patch and t-shirts.

He also made the company patches for Peekskill E130 & E134, they appear on his website under the Northeast patches.

  2. I heard some folks have received their results back from the 1/20 test. Has anyone received theirs yet? Also heard they do not have a score on them, rather a formula for the candidate to figure out their own score.

  5. Maybe with the Fire Academy Annex closed at Camp Smith and some of these classes becoming more and more difficult to get the people into that need the class, more departments will see the benefit of paying for their department to have a class or even better maybe a couple neighboring departments will get together and split the cost so that they can cover both departments.

But I agree, for the near future I don't see anyone offering cash for something their members can get at the training center.

  6. Here is an interesting take on NFPA:

Has anyone read the article in the NY Post about the amputee that is suing the City of Patterson NJ for removing him from their hiring list?

Seems the fellow has been an amputee since the age of 5, but has excelled since in both HS football and baseball. He took the written test and ranked 103 out of 600 and then took the physical test and passed. Paterson FD then sent him for a medical exam and that is where he was denied based on the "criteria" of the National Fire Protection Association and New Jersey State Fireman's Association.

    Here is the kicker

The amputees lawyer said " by their own criteria Isaac not only passes he excels" and that the NFPA guidelines are merely advisory.....

Here is a dept trying to adhere and they are being sued for doing so!

  7. From what I know - under normal staffing (1 FF on each rig) if either 39M1 (E131) or 39M2 (E130) goes out on an EMS call - the engine is out of service until the medic/ff gets back to qtrs. As far as a rescue is concered - E134 is the rescue-engine. It carries all the rescue equiptment. Also as far as I know, 99% of the time the members go to the scene.

    You have it 684!

We have 6 apparatus and 1 career member staffing each. There are 4 shifts. Volunteers will respond to scene unless they are at FH when job hits. When the rig is out on a BLS call it is unavailable until called in clear from scene and when a medic goes out the rig is dead until they return to the house.

Per the career contract the volunteers are not allowed to operate the rigs, so they can not respond and place an O/S rig into service for a call. You will also notice on all structure fires that the ladder and 3 engines will be dispatched, the third engine is dispatched for the career man to operate the bucket on the ladder. Again, the contract will not allow for a volunteer to operate the bucket.

E134 is a rescue/pumper - longer than most traditional pumpers and operates as both the rescue and a pumper. The new R134 will be primarily a rescue but will have a pump with a limited amount of 1"3/4.

  8. Ok, I have to play Devil's advocate, just to get the thoughts flowing and NO bashing, this is meant to get people thinking about their actions and their department guidelines and to learn them if they don't know them:

Question? How many departments allow their "newly trained" FF1 Probie into a working fire?

Do departments require their probie to stay out of "working" jobs or are they allowed to follow a more "qualified"(aka senior, trained, experienced) firefighter in? Or are they allowed in on overhaul only?

Just a thought that perhaps FF1 is adequate for getting the feel of what to expect, but as you gain the basic experience you would want to take additional classes or would be required by your department rules to take more classes(i.e - aspirations to become an officer would require a great deal more and specific training before you are qualified, F.A.S. Team member, Rescue etc...).

And even if you take all the training you can, let's be honest it does not make you immediately the most qualified or better person. On paper it may appear that way, but how much of your training did you retain and did you take too much too fast and had no idea what the instructor was talking about because you had never experienced any situation that was discussed.

Just a few thoughts to stir some thoughts.

  9. They are looking at the parcel of land on the corner of Louisa Street and South Street, opposite the City Garage. The council voted a couple weeks ago by a 4-2 vote to go ahead with the exploration of having Target invest in and build at that location. This vote was on the Govt. channel broadcast of that particular council meeting.

  11. Overhead lines may be more unsightly and are definitely at the mercy of Mother Nature( and the occasional DWI ) but the underground lines will be more costly to repair as the streets or grass area will need to be dug up and then restored. That will cause the customers to be irrate over the inconvenience that causes and of course somebody's prize tree or rose bush will be in the way and be destroyed generating a damage claim against the utility.

  12. Peekskill, NY - The old Centennial Hose Headquarters. Closed in 1980 has been abandoned since that time. Building is scheduled to be moved from its current location across the street due to a NYS DOT bridge & roadway project on Rte 9 over Central Ave. This building was built around 1876.

Building is slated to be be restored to its original state and turned into a fire museum for the City of Peekskill. Volunteers of the Peekskill Fire Department have started raising funds to place a memorial at the refurbished site to honor all emergency responders who died in the line of duty on September 11.

Firehouse is located on the southeast corner of Water St & Central Ave in Peekskill.

Let's hope the government holds to its word and the fire service gains a great new museum in a historic old firehoue.
