  1. its not really defering. you have to return the canvass letter saying no, reinstate my name immediately - other. then you specify in the provided space that you are recovering from an injury, but you want your name to remain on the list
  2. yes its feb. for the spring academy and aug for the fall academy. 2 CPATs a year
  3. he is correct. you can "over canvass" if there are only 3 or 4 100s and canvass the 95s, but the only way you would go furthur in the process is if 2 or less 100s return the letter with a yes.
  4. they can only interview the 100s as of now. when there are 2 or less 100s remaining on the local list, you will get a canvass letter if there is an opening. the way it works is, for each job, they canvass the top 3 scores. if there are 3 100's, then all 3 100 are the top 1 2 and 3 in no paricular order if there are 2 100s. then the 2 100s are # 1 and 2 and all 95s are #3 if there is 1 100 and 1 95, then the 100 is #1, the 95 is #2 and all the 90s are #3 they can hire anyone that is canvassable. so in theory given my last example with the 1 100 1 95 and 90s being #3, a applicant with the score of a 90 can be hired over a 100 and or 95 2 lists ago, there was a applicant on the list that remained on the list and expired on the list with a 100. many 90s were hired over the 100. i don't know the paticulars regarding the situation though hopefully that answers your question
  5. the 50 number was me making a point. I have no idea how many is on the local list. My point is, if there are 2 people ahead of you, then your chances are great. it there are 50 ahead of you your chances arent great. see my point? its hard to give you your chances without knowing what you are up against.
  6. It's impossible to say. If every person ahead of you turns down the job and or fails the CPAT, you will be the first person hired. If there are 303 on the open competative list ahead of you and 50 ahead of you on the local list and they all accept the canvass and pass the CPAT, they your chances are slim at best There are a lot a variables and unknowns, so its not possible to give you a "yes" or "no" answer
  7. guys, its very simple. every municipality that needs to give an exam "orders" a test from the state. Usually every March, there are tests given throughout the state. This past March, Westchester county, New Rochelle, Troy.....etc all gave exams. This is not an umbrella exam, the original poster is simply advising that whatever municipality that plans on giving an exam in 2016 will be having the exam on March 19th Check the normal places you would check to find out about exam announcments.
  8. they are both. they employ emt's and medics both part and full time, as well as, cop medics assigned to every platoon. they also have a paramedic supervisor who is a non cop medic. cop medics can be on swat if they have the necessary training
  9. I thought you volunteered or accepted professional positions with the up front knowledge of responding to each and every call, as if its an emergency. Emergency services are supposed to be dedicated to the communities, in which, they protect, regardless of the address, nature and frequancy of the call. It boggles my mind that people are acknowledging the fact that they "pick and choose" which alarm to respond to. This mentality contridicts everything that the emergency services stand for. Let the officers be officers, commissioners be commissioners and handle the problems, if determined that a problem exists and in the mean time, remember what you signed up for and serve your community everytime the alarm goes off.

  11. Who cares? keep your bus properly stocked and have your personel have their cards on their person at all times. Period
  12. So i called Human Resources, as the original poster of "the results are out" comment should have. As per HR, some time in October for the Westchester County Firefighter exam results to be certified and released.
  13. I doubt thats true. they usually take 6 months + for every test ive ever taken
  14. if anything it would be a disqualification, not losing points but I don't know if they enforce that

  16. the list is good for 3-4 years the old list expires when they certify the new list. there is no concrete time frame in which the list must be active. The past 3 or so lists have been all given in march and have been certified early fall, but theoretically, the county can give a new test any time after 3 years passes, rendering the current list expired as soon as they certify the new one

  19. I agree. there is a reason just about every fire dept engine company carries about the same amount of LDH and attack lines. You just never know what you need and when you will need it.
  20. Rookies should know that just because you just came out of probie school or FF1, you did not write the book on firefighting.
  21. I want to wish all the members a very Merry Christmas to you and yours. Also, to the members of the emergency services that will be working and cannot be with their families. Last but not least, the military personal, who are fighting for our freedom and cannot be here with their families.
  22. probies should listen to anything with turnout gear and a pulse. I don't see the need for us to create titles for these people
  23. Lt - in charge of their company. Still a body going into the fire but an inside supervisor if you will. Capt. - in charge of the firehouse as a whole Assistant Chiefs - In charge of overseeing a specific task, both on scene and administratively. AC of training, AC of fire prevention ect. On scene you may have a water supply chief, a safety chief, a resources chief ect. Chief - The boss of the dept. Runs the behind the scene things (working directly with the board, mayor, comish, and or supervisor) makes the SOP and SOG s for the dept ect. On scene the chief is in charge of the big picture and delegates as needed. That is textbook for large multi-firehouse departments and even still a sergeant position would be redundant. Imagine a sergeant position in a small, single house department, where the current positions cause too many chiefs and not enough Indians?
