  1. I think any of us with a heart or any kind of respect have had that guilty feeling of photographing a fire. If you really think about it though, in almost all cases its about photographing the actions of firefighters and others at the scene of the fire that we're really after, not the raging fire that's coming out the window. Its always about having people in the pictures that makes them interesting.

I don't know why exactly, but I have always felt more comfortable taking pictures at fires involving "taxpayers" or busineses than homes or certainly apartment buildings. I guess its because your business or your car, for example, can be nore easily replaced than personal belongings from your home.

Basically, you stay out of the way of emergency workers and not draw attention to yourself.

My experience taking pictures at some fires (especially in urban areas) has been people being more excited about you being from the newspaper or tv news than getting upset at you for taking the pictures in the first place!!

Anyway, Happy Holidays to all and keep those pictures coming!!

  2. I read your Blog and I say good for you!!! You did the right thing by not giving in and getting the car anyway and falling for their BS. If I were you, I would try to consider something other than Honda now.

Good luck with reaching Honda. I hope you get some satifisaction.

  4. So are there any model train stores you guys know about in the dutchess/westchester area where a 4 y/o can say. "I want that!" a million times???

Cant think of any off hand right now but your best bet is probably going to one of the local train/toy shows. There is one coming up in Poughkeepsie at the Mid Hudson Center. I can get you the date if you're interested. They have it every year. And of course there are always the shows at the Wesrchester County Center. They usually have one right around Christmas.

  5. I think maybe what you need to figure out is what are the most important things on the site that the most people come to look for. Do most people come to see the message forums or do more people come to see the latest pictures? Do most come to see the blogs or other links?

Personally, the frst thing i look for is the Incident Alerts and then the different topics on the message forums. So, I would say that those links should be closest to the top with a new picture each day(if possible), like it is now, heading the page. That would be followed by links to the other featues according to what is most popular. You may know that better than anyone.

I would say though that in looking at the main page today that it is a little long and that some of the links to the pictures near the bottom are a few months old and that perhaps they could be taken off sooner. I would guess that a majority of viewers have seen them by now anyway. Doing this may eliminate some of the "clutter" that some are referring to.

Overall though, I appreciate the hard work and time that you put into the site and if you did nothing else to change it that would be fine too.

  7. 6-6 Preliminary for Manhattan and the Bronx

    7-7 Brooklyn

    8-8 SI

    9-9 Queens

The 5-5-5-5 was just to signify that there was a LODD and the flag should be lowered to half mast. There were no other signals transmitted over the bells for where it occurred that I know of.

The whole thing with the bells can be summed up in three words for NYC, "What Where and Who" when it came to units.

    5-1563-59 S/C Engine 59 to Box 1563.

    15-273-64 Relocate Engine 64 to 273.

    Or "Where, What, Where"

    99-22-1782 Queens 2nd Alarm, Box 1782.

3-Special building box, still used today for Private Fire Alarms.

    4-S/C BC

    5-S/C Engine

    5-7-Engine and Truck Response

    6-S/C Marine Co.

    7-S/C Ladder

    7-5-All Hands Operating

    8-S/C Squad

9-S/C Special Unit they used to use other numbers for each special unit, but when we go manual now, we just write down the unit.

    10-S/C Rescue

1-1-Transmit the Box(3 and 2 to respond with BC)

    14,15,16,17 Relocate Chief,Engine, Boat, Truck.

Anyone ever seen the full Box assignment like this for 9/11? It must fill a few pages!

  8. If anyone likes a really good Italian Feast, visit the Feast going on right now until Sunday at St.Augustine Church on Route 9 Ossining. The food is outstanding and has a large variety including seafood and desserts. There are also the betting wheels but also a full indoor Casino with table card games. Tonight (Wednesday) has fireworks as well as Sunday night,. They begin at 9:15.

My wife and I have been visiting this Feast for a few years now and it is always a lot of fun. Check it out!!!!

  10. Alpha - BLS unit only. No medic assigned @ time of dispatch.

Bravo - BLS unit and medic. Falls, general illness, intox.

Charlie - BLS unit and medic. Abdominal Pain, Falls w/ neck/back/chest pain, MVAs (w/o chest pain or diff breather), diabetic emergency

Delta - BLS unit and medic. Chest Pain, Diff Breather, seizure, diabetic emergency w/ AMS/seizure, unresponsive but breathing - potentially life threatening situations.

Echo - BLS unit and Medic. Cardiac Arrest, Respritory Arrest, Major Trauma, MCIs, etc.

Thats a rough outline of what each level consists of - it all really depends on what the EMD gets at time of dispatch. I think the whole idea is to prevent medic's from being dispatched on obvious BLS calls - its soposed to be more efficent. Working in the county(on the bls level), i almost dont even notice the call designations unless its echo because Putnam 911 always lets you know what you have. IE: "Medic 1 & Philipstown Ambulance, Delta level response to (street) for chest pain w/ cardiac history"

Thanks for the response. It sounds like it also help to "moderate" the response so that you don't have units racing with lights and siren to minor calls. I think its a good system.
