  1. Do our local departments have any programs in place to address this issue??

    By CARRIE ANTLFINGER

    Associated Press Writer

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Police Sgt. Chuck Cross pointed his department-issue .40-caliber handgun at his temple, finger on the trigger, as he sat drunk against his hallway wall.

"I was about eight pounds of a trigger pull away," he said.

He's unsure why he stopped. Fellow officers, called by his girlfriend, took him to a mental health center. He was charged with disorderly conduct while armed, and was fired.

  2. i was also trying to touch on the subject of the people who try and get way tooo close for a good shot

Then you are definitely talking about a safety issue for both the Photographer and the emergency personnel on scene. I don't think anyone(especially from this website) would want to interfere at a fire scene to get a shot. We all can act professionally. But I guess we all have seen those that do not.

  3. I attend a lecture by Chief Alan Brunacini of the Phoenix FD. and he referred to the Fire/EMS service as "The worst day of someones life business" In other words, when the public calls on us, they are having what is probably one of their worst days of their lives and unfortunately sometimes in extreme situations, it might be their last.......

Being involved in emergency services as a provider, we are accustomed to only seeing things from our perspective, unfortunately for Ann, she experienced the other side which is something we all hope to never have to go through. Ann, I'm sorry you lost your home and have some idea what you did/are going through however, I think your anger towards the photographers may be a little harsh....I was there but late in the game, stayed for five minutes, and then left so I can't say what was done was improper.

Photography is an important part of the fire service. I take photo's of all aspects from fires to MVA's and I don't feel any regrets and nor should I........ I don't violate anyones rights, privacy, show disrespect, or plaster gruesome photo's all over the net. What I do is take photo's that tell a story, that show the good, bad, and ugly of the business that we are in and paint the fire service in a good light. Without these photo's, we could not share our stories, learn from our triumphs and mistakes, justify our existence, and maintain the camaraderie that makes the fire service what it is..... And I'm going to keep doing it.........

    Well said Bill! :o

  4. taking pictures of a fire scene. its a cool thing to do and everybody is guilty including myself. but there are legal and physical risks to it. you can violate hippa laws and if you paying attention to taking pictures your really not paying attention to your saftey many people have gotten hurt doing this i just wanna hear some other peoples opinions on this.

Was the idea of your original post to discuss HIPAA laws or to discuss the action of those who take pictures at fire scenes? Perhaps your post was not understood right? You certainly have touched a few nerves!!

If you're just talking about safety at a fire scene then of course you always have to think about where you are, where you should be, and what or who you are taking pictures of. And that also goes to the sensitivity issue that was brought up by ann11682.

  5. Agreed!! Few things annoy me more than these guys walking along, darting in and out of companies marching, apparatus driving, and bands playing. I really feel it degrades a good, decent parade. Just throwin' it out there, someone selling these items outside the actual parade route (off the road) is one thing, but as I said, darting in out and around these guys, is another.

Agree 100%! And lets not forget those equally obnoxious "horns" (or whatever they are) that they sell that annoys me like nails on a blackboard!

  6. This was horrible! Saw it on the news last night. How can any "normal" human being just walk away and leave this woman lying on the floor? Unless the video is edited, you don't see anyone even go over to check on the poor woman to see if she is OK! Not security, doctors, nurses or even the other patients sitting in the chairs in the waiting room!!! Inexcusable! Imagine if that was one of your relatives! What is wrong with people?

  7. They do random drills (some larger than others) and also random "deterrence patrols" where they show up just as you described. They're a big part of the city's counter-terrorism effort.

If anybody was doing surveillance, they'd be hard pressed to figure out where or when these patrols are going to show up!

Somehow I knew you would have a response for me :) The only thing to me though is it just seems like a huge commitment to valuable resources. Do you think it's worth it? When I saw this on Monday, there were two separate details; one on seventh avenue in Times Square that wasn't moving and another that was moving East on 42nd street, both at the same time.

  8. OK. I'll try to explain this question. My wife works in Manhattan and has described to me what she and her co-workers respectfully call a "police parade." I witnessed one of these myself near Times Square on Monday.

It is a line of at least 8 marked units some with lights and sirens on that pull up and park along a street and then stay there for a while. Some of the PO's stay in the car, some get out and stand outside. Eventually, they all move on with lights and sirens as if they are in a escort but there is no apparent escort vehicle. She says this happens almost every day.

My first guess was an escort for a dignitary or something like that, but that doesn't seem to be right. My other guess was just a kind of "show of force" as part of maybe an anti terror task force or mobilization. These do seem to take place in Times Square, Rockefeller Center etc..

Any NYPD members out there that can explain what this is?

  9. I didn't always agree with his politics either but couldn't help laughing anyway!

Got to see him live twice here in the County. Once at Iona College and once at the old Capitol Theatre in Portchester. Now I wish I had seen him in Peekskill last year at the Paramount.

    RIP George.

  10. Why not? Deep down inside of us we are all buffs. Plus, when someone asks, hey did hear a call in this area. You can say, no, but I read it on EMTBravo. Also, we can learn from incidents that are posted. You think it is worth posting, then post it.

    Thomas

Yeah thats kind of how I see it. I don't get on the computer everyday so sometimes I use the IA's as a way to sort of "catch up" on an incident that I may have missed.

  11. Does anyone know if we in the NYC metro area will be able to view season 2 of "The Academy" which airs this week?

Check the link from the previous post. It has a search you can use to find out if your cable system has the channel.

NEWBERRY, S.C. — With gasoline climbing toward $4 a gallon, police officers around the country are losing the right to take their patrol cars home and are being forced to double up in cruisers and walk the beat more.

The gas crunch could also put an end to the time-honored way cops leave their engines running when they get out to investigate something.

  13. That 898 looks like a nice receiver.

The 996 is okay, but is overkill for scanning non-digital broadcasts, any one of the cheaper models will do you just fine.

Do yourself a favor, whatever scanner you wind up getting, look into paid programming software to set up your scanner.

These new programmable trunking scanners can be a real chore to set up manually.

http://www.butel.nl/ has software for many popular models, and is fairly easy to figure out. Plus they let you have a free trial.

Regarding the software, I use a Mac. Do you know if any of the software is Mac compatible? I've never been able to find any.

  14. I'm thinking about finally replacing my "antique" base scanner with the Uniden 898. Can anyone give some feedback on this unit pro or con? I know the 996 is probably better but a little out of my price range right now. Also where would you recommend buying it? I believe Amazon had the lowest price.

    Thanks in advance!!
