Very well said, and to add to the last part, it's good to know who surrounds you and if you know the chief maybe they'll allow you to stay just because they know they can trust you with them or they know you know where your boundaries are when at a scene. I've seen some people follow the firefighters to the door of a burning building, or follow EMS as they move the victim to the ambulance/helicopter, personally, I'd never get THAT close. For many reasons, including the victims privacy, for legal rights, etc. If I would like to photograph a scene, I tend to get the outside stuff.( rigs, personell, flames, helicopters, etc, etc) I think we should all just remember where the boundaries are, and what the photos will be used for.

This is the engine's station, Station 2. The station has an engine, ladder, ambulance, and a beach patrol ATV and boat.

I am vacationing in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina ( approximately 10 miles south of Myrtle Beach) and a different engine is outside of this firehouse is Garden City daily. I could not find what engine number this is, but it seems in good shape for the age it is. I believe it is still in service, although engine and ladders were responding right past it from the other bay doors every so often.
This is the only photo I have of it, but I plan on photographing other stations apparatus throughout the week.

These were volunteers/fire/water restoration workers cooking for all of the employees that were going through the building looking for things to salvage.
