  1. Vista FD holds meeting on firehouse renovations

    By SEAN GORMAN

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: November 12, 2007)

LEWISBORO - The Vista Fire Department is holding an informational meeting tomorrow about its plans for a multimillion-dollar firehouse modernization.

Fire officials say they need to update the headquarters - built in 1954 - and are asking fire district voters to approve a $3,350,000 bond on Dec. 11 to pay for it.

"It's totally outdated," said Fire Chief Gary Lawson.

The meeting starts at 8 p.m. at the firehouse, 377 Smith Ridge Road.

The renovation would add a sixth bay to the building so the department's two ambulances can be parked side by side instead of bumper to bumper, Lawson said. The building's interior would be reconfigured to move the kitchen and meeting room away from the vehicle bays, reducing exhaust fumes in those rooms and where medical supplies are stored.

The current building has a leaky roof and doesn't comply with federal safety and disability access regulations, said Fire Commissioner Peter Raho.

In 2005, voters defeated a $3.65 million bond that would have doubled the size of the firehouse. The new plan relies on $500,000 from the fire district's surplus, Raho said, and a 20-year bond would require an average annual tax increase of $3.11 per $1,000 of assessed value. For his home - assessed at $54,200 - the additional cost would be $168.56 a year.

  2. How is it that nobody is enrolling in this class? It would seem there are plenty of support only members that this would apply to, but is most of this kind of training done in house anyways? Who is this class marketed to then?

This would be a good class to open to Explorers.

    SCENE SUPPORT OPS.

    (Bulletin #06-46)

    Chief's and Training Officer's;

This course is scheduled to be begin on June 22.  To date, only four students have been registered.  Unless enough students are registered by Monday June 19, the course will have to be cancelled.

If cancelled, this will be the fourth failed attempt to conduct the SSO course.

Student's who complete this course can later bridge into the Firefighter-I course at unit #4.  It also allows those waiting to receive Firefighter-I training, the ability to act in an exterior fire-ground support role.

Although it is a stand alone course designed for those individuals who do not desire to become interior firefighter's, it is also a component of the Firefighter-I curriculum.

  3. Air Force One subject of Internet

    Air Force One Vandalized?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A startling Internet video that shows someone spraying graffiti on President Bush's jet looked so authentic that the Air Force wasn't immediately certain whether the plane had been targeted.

It was all a hoax. No one actually sprayed the slogan "Still Free" on the cowling of Air Force One.

The pranksters responsible for the grainy, two-minute Web video - employed by a New York fashion company - revealed Friday how they pulled it off: a rented 747 in California painted to look almost exactly like Air Force One.

"I wanted to do something culturally significant, wanted to create a real pop-culture moment," said Marc Ecko of Marc Ecko Enterprises. "It's this completely irreverent, over-the-top thing that could really never happen: this five-dollar can of paint putting a pimple on this Goliath."

The video shows hooded graffiti artists climbing barbed-wire fences and sneaking past guards with dogs to approach the jumbo jet. They spray-paint a slogan associated with free expression.

After the video began circulating on the Web on Tuesday, the Air Force checked to see whether the plane had been vandalized.

"We're looking at it, too," said Lt. Col. Bruce Alexander, a spokesman for the Air Mobility Command's 89th Airlift Wing, which operates Air Force One. "It looks very real."

Alexander later confirmed that no such spray-painting had occurred.

Marc Ecko, head of Marc Ecko Enterprises, says there was a comical moment when he first saw the letters being applied.

Ecko acknowledged Friday that his company had rented a 747 cargo jet at San Bernardino's airport and covertly painted one side to look like Air Force One. Employees signed secrecy agreements and worked inside a giant hangar until the night the video was made. Ecko declined to say how much the stunt cost.

"It's not cheap," he said. "You have to be rich."

  4. Putnam 911 functions despite Verizon phone glitch

    By TERRY CORCORAN

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: February 27, 2006)

CARMEL — A glitch in the Verizon telephone lines today has forced Putnam County to switch its 911 operations from the new Emergency Operations Center to the county Sheriff's Office.

The glitch is not affecting 911 service, said Adam Stiebeling, deputy commissioner of emergency services.

"It's transparent to anyone who calls 911," Stiebeling said. "Emergency services are still being dispatched and calls are being recorded through our CAD (computer-aided dispatch) system."

Under the county's back-up system, 911 calls are routed through the Sheriff's Office in the case of a malfunction. The Emergency Operations Center sent some of its dispatchers to the Sheriff's Office to assist with the calls, Stiebeling said.

The problem only appears to be affecting lines in the 225 exchange, which includes Carmel and Lake Carmel.

"We don't have a straight answer from Verizon on what caused the problem, but they've been notified and are working on it," he said.
