  2. Want an Ambulance? Too Bad

    By TAMARA VOSTOK

Updated 8:00 AM EDT, Wed, Apr 22, 2009

A recent proposal by City Controller Alan Butkovitz calls for nurses to be placed in Philadelphia’s 911 call center to give care over the phone for non-emergencies, in an effort to save the city millions of dollars.

  3. I am going to school recently and was driving around City Hall only a few minutes before this and saw Squirt 43 driving by. They seemed to be driving a lot faster than any apparatus should in a crowded city at noon time. Way too many cars around.

Not sure where they were exactly going. There are conflicting reports from various news agencies as to where they were going. Some say a fire at 22nd and Warren St, which doesn't exist. Those 2 streets never meet. Others say 12th and Locust. If 12th and Locust is true, I'm not sure how they ended up at 8th and Lombard. Some are saying they were coming from 2 separate calls when they crashed. They are stationed at 21st and Market St. These are far distances for these trucks to be covering. I know that they're coverage zone starts on a part of Drexel University's campus at 32nd and Market. I dont know how far it goes but it seems like thats a lot of area for 2 trucks to cover.

    Speedy recovery to all

Engine-45 arrived on scene with heavy smoke showing from a four story 100x200 church, placed all hands in service. Command reported heavy fire conditions through out, requested all companies to evacuate the building and go in service with heaviest water lines. The fire reached seven alarms as the building became fully involved.

A dwelling approximately half of a block away caught fire. Crews had heavy fire third floor rear and roof of a three story M/O/R, used companies on the sixth alarm to knock the fire. A snorkel was placed in service two block away for ember patrol.

Helicopters dumping water on Harriman park brush fire; at least 10 acres burned

HARRIMAN STATE PARK - Stony Point firefighters and forest rangers were working with two National Guard helicopters to put out a brush fire that continued to burn this morning in the scenic Anthony Wayne Recreation Area on the Orange County border.

  7. i witnessed a recent mva/hit and run on the TSP in the early morning and stopped to make sure the driver was ok. she had a neck injury with a small laceration to her foot. She was in pain, however, didn't want to go to the hospital because she had to get to work. The H.E.L.P. truck operator informed me that the ambulance was not coming because she said that she didn't want to go. He said it was their protocol only to dispatch the ambulance if the victim wanted to go, whether anyone medically trained was on scene or not. He also added something about a ambulance fee for coming out and he didn't want the victim to have to pay for it if she didn't want to go. Keep in mind, nobody medically trained had checked the victim out. I had enough sense to make sure she didn't move and convinced her to go to the hospital to get check out, however, i am not an EMT, just made sense to me...

Is it me or should the victim still be check out by EMS personnel? Shouldn't EMS be the ones to RMA the victim if they still don't want to go?

  8. Briarcliff Manor deputy fire chief dies of heart attack

    By SEAN GORMAN

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original Publication: May 18, 2007)

BRIARCLIFF MANOR - Firefighters are planning a memorial service this weekend for a fellow member who suffered a heart attack and died this week while on his way to a fire call.

The services are being held to remember Deputy Chief Joseph E. Piazzi, a 76-year-old village resident who joined the department in 1971.

"Joe was a great guy," Briarcliff Manor Fire Chief Marty Gallagher said yesterday. "It's a big loss to us."

Piazzi had answered a series of storm-related calls Wednesday before returning home around 6 p.m., fire officials said.

He was on his way to yet another call when he began to experience chest pains and called 911 at 6:28 p.m., Assistant Chief Douglas Cacciola said.

A Briarcliff Manor firefighter and EMT who lives two doors from Piazzi on Hazelton Circle responded to his home about a minute after the call went out, fire officials said.

"When the first EMT arrived on the scene he (Piazzi) did say, 'I was going to the call, and I couldn't breathe,'" Cacciola said.

He was taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow and was pronounced dead about an hour later.

"He was a regular guy, a good guy, an astute firefighter ... The fire department was his life," Cacciola said. "He was a father figure in the department, a mentor to a lot of the younger guys."

Piazzi was the Briarcliff Manor chief from 1983 to 1985. Before coming to Briarcliff Manor, Piazzi was a captain in the Mount Vernon Fire Department, according to a news release from the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department.

Piazzi remained an active member of the department and in recent years helped with traffic control around fire department scenes, Cacciola said.

"Joe's a great guy. Joe was always here," said Tom Farrington, a deputy chief with the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department. "Whenever there was a call here you could count on Joe's red truck pulling up and coming into the firehouse. He's going to be missed."

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Waterbury and Kelly Funeral Home, 1300 Pleasantville Road in Briarcliff Manor.

There will be also be visiting hours on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. A fire department memorial service will start at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church on Pleasantville Road in Briarcliff Manor.

  9. I am a film student and I use Avid Xpress Pro. I use it for both presentation videos and editing feature and short films with footage from either Mini DV, DVCAM, 16mm, or 35mm film. I currently run it on a custom built PC with the Canopus ADVC-110 (allows audio and video to be imported and exported using RCA, S-Video, or firewire), a JVC VHS-Mini-DV deck, and a JVC preview monitor. I am waiting to run Avid Xpress Pro on my new MacbookPro because Avid has not released the fix for the Mac-Intel Processors yet. Avid Xpress Pro costs about $1500 and as of now Avid is the movie industry standard. It works on both Mac and PC. If you are looking for a cheaper program, Sony makes a program called Vegas+DVD. It has both video editing and DVD authoring in it and runs about $550 or so. If you know a student or teacher who can buy these for you off of academicsuperstore.com or studica.com, then I would go for Avid Xpress Pro because its about $250 with the student discount and you get everything that you get for $1500. The Avid Mojo with Avid Xpress Pro is also a good package. THe Avid Mojo is used to import and export through Avid. It is more expensive but from what I hear its well worth it.

  10. Foundation shifts in downtown Pleasantville building

    By ROB RYSER

    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: March 19, 2007)

PLEASANTVILLE -The foundation was pushed out from a downtown Pleasantville building, forcing several dozen employees onto the streets this morning, police said.

What was first reported as a building collapse is more accurately an unsafe condition, police said.

Police closed two blocks in front of 351 Manville Road. The two story retail building is near the Jacob Burns Film Center.

The emergency was reported around 9 a.m. today after employees from a dental office in the building discovered that the foundation had shifted.

Police said it was too early to say whether the damage was storm-related.

    No injuries were reported.

The glass-faced retail center houses a salon, cleaners, spa, and a children's clothing store, among others.

It was not clear how soon employees would be allowed back into the building, if at all.

  11. I'm currently living in Philly while attending school and have been riding on almost a regular basis with Engine 44 here. E44 is based in Mantua, a section of West Philadelphia. As far as I know. All of the above fires have occurred in areas either similar to or worse than the area that E44 covers. Many of the buildings go against code. I responded with them one night on a box. They were the first due engine being that it was a few blocks away. Upon arrival, we noticed that it was a church on fire. When the members of E44 entered they realized it was no longer a church. The church had been converted into apartments. The fire was reported by phone and not by smoke detectors and no smoke detectors were found in the entire building. The occupants were very lucky that they all got out in time. Throughout Philly there are a lot of buildings like this and it doesn't seem like the government has made a big enough effort to fix this. I'm sure they will now though.
