  1. with the arrival of the new R-4 in the next few weeks the current R-4 (91' Pierce) will become R-54 and the current R-54 (ESU truck) has been donated to the Farral Fund and will be donated to another FD.

    Who might that be?

    When does R4 arrive?

  2. The HP engine spec I have (about 3 years old)shows that the dealer is responsable for the following:

I stand corrected, you are right. What I meant to say is that Motorola puts them in at Seagrave.

  3. Barry, the glass I understand, along with other spare parts. How about radio's though? That doesn't go through a separate bid? With the specific stereo-simplex system, the job doesn't purchase that stuff separate and have our shops install it?

    Thanks for the price insight.

Seagrave does not put in the radios. I believe each rig was 800K+ and the total price includes an additional 9 or so units above the initial 21 units to be done at a later date.

  4. Just to clarify, although it was initially reported as a "ceiling collapse" it was certainly not a ceiling. What collapsed was actually an entire roof section of a one story brick and steel section of the school which was under demolition. The entire roof section pancaked with 2 workers on it who were buried under the collapsing parapet walls. Both workers suffered major trauma injuries and one is critical in a coma on a respirator. Hopefully he will survive. The photo on LoHud shows the scene.

Thank you to those who responded; NRFD,FDMV.PMFD and Empress Medics.

  5. This was not an accident, it was a preventable occurence. When will we learn?

I have to agree here. MOST accidents are preventable. In some rare cases they are due to extenuating circumstances such as mechanical failure or weather or such. However this APPEARS like many to be attributed to driving practices. Thankfully no one (MOS or civilians) were killed in what looks like a catastrophic collision. It is a miracle they ALL survived but some of their lives will be changed by this incident. How many apparatus accidents occur every year? and how many injuries or deaths occur from them? Don't we face enough inherent danger as it is? We must change the way we respond to incidents or this will continue to be a problem. You have to apply risk vs. benefit to responding as well. In this case the risk did not outweigh the benefit as we clearly see by the tragic outcome. I preach to my crew all the time about responding appropriately to every incident and they understand that I do this because I am ultimately responsible for us getting there safely and would have to answer for whatever went wrong. Just as the Officers of these two companies (as well as the chauffeurs) will have to do somewhere down the road. I hope everyone fully recovers and that the rest of us learn from this and SLOW DOWN and be more careful when responding. We owe that to each other and the public.

  7. In Buchanan, we do any minor work that we can in house. But for the past year or so we have been using Rapid Fire Services (Kevin) and he is amazing! He does scheduled maintenance for us on our rigs and will be there for emergencies as well. A few months back, our main attack engine would not start. We placed it out of service with 60-Control and called Kevin. He was at our firehouse in about 45 minutes and fixed the problem right away.

Ditto, Rapid Fire is the way to go! Give him a call; 914-588-6976

  8. PLus a month after I complain my bill is thru the roof...because the dipshits at Nextel decided to eliminate my free incoming calls

It was my understanding that if you were already on a Free Incoming plan prior to Sprint eliminating it, then you were "Grandfathered"? I could be wrong though. Were you on the Free Incoming? You should have been allowed to stay on it. Also, if you were being charged for minutes during your Night & Weekend period you should be able to get credit for that. I've had fairly good success with resolving issues with them lately. I know they've been horrible in the past but lately they seem to be more willing to satisfy. Are you calling reg. Customer Service or Gov't accounts? If your in Public Safety you should be on a Gov't Individual account. Reg. cust. service is definetly not as good as Gov't Cust Service. Yes the Network was terrible for a couple of years but it's gotten better again, at least in my opinion (anybody else?) Finally, there's always the Everything Plan if your a heavy user.

  9. Everyone talks about bringing back MV to what it use to be, does anyone actually know what that was? Yes the rescue was manned with 4, but was that not at the cost of manning on the engines and trucks?

Doesn't the MV City charter cap the number of uniformed personnel? And that cap has been in place since the 1950's?

Has Foam 1 everbeen manned or is it a 2nd piece?

Having this new leadership is a great start and I know Noah and teddy will work hard to improve FDMV, but I think the manning issues will be there for many years to come.

Just saying that MV should hire more does not get around the city charter and changing the charter requires the community to vote (a vote that will increase taxes) this is in a community that in May voted down all sports in the schools to prevent the increase in taxes (note....it did not reduce the tax, just hold it at last years level).

    I wish them luck.........

When I got on FDMV in 1988 we had 5 Engine Co's (Eng.1 had just been decommissioned) 3 Ladder Co's and the Rescue. Foam 1 was kept in Sta.2 and was manned by Eng.5 back step man when needed to respond. In years earlier they even had a Rescue 2 which was manned and did primarily EMS. From what I was told by the senior men was that back when the Rescue ran out of it's own quarters on Fulton Ave. with 5 or 6 men, they used to work a 56 hour work week.

Good Luck to Noah & Teddy. They have a very tough road ahead of them. It's no easy job to take over a department where moral is very low.

  10. just wanted to say that on the mvfd m/a pelham manor no longer responds to mt vernon

the way i hear it ( mind you this is second hand ) the pmfd chief and mvfd chief have had words and they will no longer go on m/a at least not on 1st done in bases because no volunteers are allowed into a union area when ever pmfd goes in they have to do call backs to cover pm fire or like when pelham went to nrfd to stand by and the tmfd stood by on 5th ave for pelham for the same reason no volunteers in new rochelle as far as pelham they may be in the same boat also as pelham manor

What are you talking about (particularly the bold/underlined)?

Thank you, I was going to ask the same question!

  11. Now I can't remember if they built the pumpers as the high pressure three stage pumpers or 2000 gpm pumpers. The body style looks like FDNY spec but it is hard to tell just from this picture.

This rig was one of three FDNY High-Pressure Units Ferrara built for the city. It has been retro-fitted with a Waterous single-stage 1500 gpm pump.

  12. I like the Ferrara Ultra cab, other than FDNY and Mount Vernon, NY and now Pelham- did any other Ultra's get delivered?

    None, to my knowledge

Since this is a 2004, was this a demo or did it see service somewhere else?

    Never, only went to shows.

Also, will Engine 5 become the new primary Engine, or will Engine 4 still retain that title? Also, what's the status on R-45?

Engine 5 will become first due. R45 is in reserve status.
