  1. Well, if ours were labeled in French as well, that would probably happen with great frequency!
  2. Sage: That would be helpful if you could throw something together. Now, from experience, here's a few hints as you move forward. First, laminate it. You know we're just liable to spill coffee (or in my case Redbull) on it. Second, make sure you use small words (or even better, graphics), we're not that bright as a group, so you don't want to trick us. Third, and lastly, make sure you include an asterisk which dictates that the matrix MUST be adhered to, despite changes in the conditions or situations. Again, we, as a group, are not really able to adapt to a changing situation, and we will really need to stay focused on a simple flow chart! From the LE community, many thanks for setting us straight!
  3. JJB: I have carefully analyzed all the posts on this thread and the related one and it would now seem to me that ESU's choice is obvious: 1) Take action and get criticized on it on forums such as this one 2) Take no action, (get a picture of the ESU guys standing around in the NY Post), and get criticized in the media and by the public at large So really, the choice is obvious. Just decide who you want to criticize your actions, and that will help guide you in you decision making matrix.
  4. And you know what crime cop, some of these (not all) are the same posters who pull the "we're on the same team" card when it comes time for some "courtesy" that they feel entitled too out in the field. Their outrage is sporadic and magically disappears when convenient.
  5. Date: 05/06/12 Time: 0130 Hrs Location: Tenampa Restaurant, Albany Post Road Frequency: Mulitple Units Operating: NYSP - Patrol, BCI, Crime Scene Weather Conditions: Clear Description Of Incident: Stabbing/slashing to face/head. Victim with massive blood loss transported by POV to Hudson Valley ER. Reporters: INIT915
  6. I have always felt traffic advisors were useless. They offer a false sense of security. While some sharp eyed motorists may discern the intended pattern, the vast majority of motorists see nothing but randomly flashing lights. If you are operating on a scene and depending heavily on motorists (even well intentioned, law abiding motorists) to understand the flash patterns, I think your asking for trouble.
  7. I think the bottom line most of us realize is, when push comes to shove, most of us in the emergency services will go above and beyond. Some will take a backseat. We all know who are the lines likely to step up and who are likely to walk away.
  8. Actually, given the scenario you presented, the "hit" does not constitute assault, not in New York anyway. Maybe under another states laws, but not here in New York.
  9. One thing to remember. Mileage on PD cars can be misleading. You have to include that those are often hard miles. Especially on highway and inner-city units. Also, figure most cars idle 25x as long as your average passenger car (if not more). So not as many miles, but hundreds of hours more worth of usage.
  10. It's unfortunate that you (we) have to choose between one or the other. Honestly speaking though, I would probably say I disagree with you slightly. All things being equal, I more loathe the constant and baseless attacks on public sector workers than the idea that less than qualified applicants will be hired. I mean, let's face it, we all already work with guys/gals that never should have been hired, but they had a good day and did well on a rather simple test. The mere fact that the courts are making that an easier pathway, to me, it less of a threat then we face from anti-union, anti-labor forces who are attacking our pay, benefits, pension, etc.
  11. It's not uncommon for the DOJ to file lawsuits on behalf of complainants.
  12. What's the alternative? Vote Republican and deal with the continued assault on collective bargaining rights, pensions, etc? And, if I remember correct, was it not the Bush Justice Dept that filed the FDNY Vulcan suit?
  13. Sounds like the City has no real plan. Does CT civil service law govern this or what?
  14. Jay24, Has there been any action by the city to vacate the list?
  15. I guess my standards are a bit higher. I might have sourced the information a little before posting a rumor like this.
  16. How could there be legal action on something that is just "some talk"? If there is legal action, it must be more then just talk.
  17. In addition to Westchester, most of the DA's offices in the region share that policy.
  18. Just a technical point, but it's 40 mph, which is 11 points, which would trigger an automatic suspension.
  19. I have to disagree with you Capt. You can't throw around numbers backing your hypothesis if they don't actually do that. They may, after analysis, but not in the manner they were presented. It's no secret I think JF knows what he is talking about, but his ability to relate it often gets lost in his delivery to some. As I don't have anything with the fire service, career or volunteer, I certainly don't take it personal.
  20. Well said. As anyone who produces statistical modeling knows, you must correct for resultant bias within an acceptable probability ratio, or else your comparing apples and oranges. For a valid comparison, you must equalize in order to compare apples to apples.
  21. JF - Dont let LoHud off so easy! If it were me, I'd make an issue about them misquoting you in that March article.
  22. With the overall quality of conditions and staff at most SNF, I would think they'd want all the help they could get to respond.
  23. OK, excellent. I couldn't agree more. I merely asked your position, as a recent article you were quoted in failed to include the term "career", and I wasn't sure if you were working to have that corrected. I am all for equality.
  24. Does that work both ways? Should news articles pertaining to career personnel point out as much?
