  1. The streamlights are all a P.O.S.

Survivor light lasted 1.5 years and took a crap, So I bought the Fire Vulcan and that battery

died 1 year and 2 months to the day... I just replaced the battery, (Not Cheap)

A few fellow brothers have had problems with both the battery and the light bulbs falling out inside the housing...

For the money these things cost you would expect a better quality light...

You would be better off buying a small LED flashlight from the parts store for 3-4 bucks and they come with batteries

  2. Obviously something prompted them to come up with codes and signals. Perhaps because plain English was just too wordy, perhaps when someone said "send me a bus to this location" the dispatcher sent a school bus and they wanted to do away with interpretation of plain English, or perhaps they're just a holdover from the really old days of telegraph signaling.

    RES6CUE:

you were on to something here.

The reason 10 codes were implemented into the emergency services in the 1st place was....When they first started using radios the power and quality was no where near what it is today and radio transmissions used to be very UNclear and broken up so you would have to repeat things and they still got lost.

Therefore rather than using sentances to describe incidents, they implemented a 10 code therefor our transmissions would be quick and short and it would be a lot easier to understand. Now that the radios are better they are still not perfected.

As with more and more devices using hi and lo band frequencies the communications are still lost in certain instances. Until they create a radio that is 110% reliable no matter wher you are I think they should stick to the reason 10 codes were created in the 1st place

Thay have worked for years and the only reason they don't is becuse ther are too many different versions of the codes. a 10-75 here is a 10-26 there and a 10-57 somewhere else. Correct that 1st

  3. I know where you're coming from with this, but it's also a bit exaggagerated...for the most part, the fire & ems agencies up here in Dutchess get messages through to the 911 center effectively using plain english, transmitting clear and "to the point" messages (there are, of course, occasional exceptions...but not enough to create much of a problem).

Yes a bit exaggerated but you know where I am coming from.

I guess it's just like anything else they all have pro's and con's

the question is what really will work.what might be good for dutchess might not work in rockland or in westchester or visa versa.

and in the really busier depts compared to the slower depts it will also be a lot different. I am game for what works but I do fell the 10 codes on a national standardization would be more effective.

  4. Guys -

I think they went the wrong direction with this.

What the government should have done was to see what are the most common

10 codes amongst nationwide departments. And set a standard and establish a 10 code list that all fire departments will use.

Let's face it we all use a quite a bit of the same codes and it wouldn't be that difficult to train everyone on the new or revised codes. If this is about being NIMS compliant then when a department responds to mutual aid in an area well outside there own the language will be even harder to understand along with double and triple transmissions trying to figure out what they hell "FARMER BROWN" is talking about.

For you guys who have members on you job who like to talk you can vouch for the fact that now they will never shut up and this can be very dangerous in a real situation.

And you can picture some of the departments in our area, (not to mention any names) getting a call at 4am for a smoke condition in the area of.....heres what you will probably hear..........

speaking like.. yeah ingen ** is on scene checkin' it out yo!

"60 control reply- On scene at 0400"

ingen ** to 60 trol yeah we gots a lot o fire cummin out some wind hoes and it's freakin' hot betta git sum mo rigs here quickly ya no wut I mean!

"60 control reply- Can you repeat that"

I think 10-84 investigating and 10-75 a lot clearer and to the point

  6. Well, here in the capital of "no turn signals", i probably see one or two a week, that, in traffic, just fly down the lines, between the lanes.  Usually if they are seen coming, someone will block them back.  you gotta be out of your      mind to run down the lines like that......road kill comes to mind.  Hopefully, i hope i don't see the day where one is flying thru the air past me...

nyemt you just summed up my point.

I am not saying the bikers are right for riding the lines but what sick individual would purposely block a 400- 700 lb, 2 wheeled, non protected vehicle from going thru??????

  7. If i've ever noticed anything.. The motorcycle accidents i have worked have all been dumba** bikers speeding or driving intoxicated not to mention all the jerkoffs that have weaved between myself and another car and have almost crashed!!!

you see theres the problem. guys like you who assume to much and are bike haters. I lost a few friends on bikes and guess what it was the a**hole driving the car. perfectg example 1 of my friends was sitting at a RED light and some idiot ran him over from behind

1st off i used to ride religously every day with at least 15 - 20 bikes and with all the bbq's or night stops at various hangouts not one of us would have even 1 drink. Can't say so for anyone driving a car!

Let me start off by telling you the whole picture don't just stop at bikes weaving...finish the story!!!!

I can speak from experience I have been on everything from harleys to crotch rockets.

people who hate bikes will do anything to stop them. for example the bikes go by you on lets say the taconic at 100 plus mph weaving, an a**hole driving in the middle lane with no traffic in front of him for no apparent reason decides he's going to move over to either the left or right lane because either he looked in his mirror and saw bikes or a couple have already passed him by so he moves, now with nowhere to go the bikes lock up the brakes and guess what???

  8. i also ride. its sucks to hear and see these things but if any thing could help others is to enroll in a motorcycle safety course. i took it when i got my motorcycle lisence and it paid for itself. things i learned in that class have saved me from having some serious accidents. each time i remembered the instuctors directions and pulled through safely with no damage. drive defensively and be safe!

I also ride but lets face it it isn't us its the dopes driving.

some hate bikes, some are on cell phones, some are doing make-up, some are old, some are blind, some are new drivers, some are plain old stupid...

there should be a required driver safety course every year for new drivers, every 2 years when you hit 21, and every 3years after that and when you hit about 60 it should be every year again.

I have been riding on the street for over 15 years and on bikes for about 30 and one thing I can tell you is over 80 % of motorcycle accidents are the cars fault

  9. I took both White Plains and Yonkers tests in previous years. White plains told me I'd passed and invited me to the practice physical then told me I wouldn't take the real physical as I didn't have residency.

I took the Yonkers test (and was pretty much laughed at when I applied as I didn't have residency) and never heard back again! I also took the County test but couldn't afford to take any of the jobs on the money they were offering.

Guess I'll just stick to volleying  :(

Hey Monty take this how you want!

I can speak probably for about 95% of my job in saying if it's about the money then we really don't want you on our job anyway.

We are looking for fellas who want to fight fires regardless of pay, and every job out there starts low and increases each year! It's about putting in your hard time and making things work even if it takes working 2-3 other jobs on your time off.

Look at the guys who take the Mount Vernon job, start w/ 23k a year and go up gradually to around 32k a year for the first 4 years and then hit top pay after that

That's a struggle but they still have guys taking the test knowing this!

  10. Thanks for your replies men.

I don't know how they do things in Yonkers and wasn't sure how they do things in the other cities, but it sounds pretty much the same.

Do you know how they score the physical? Do they add up the times, each induvidual agility, and then combine them??

    Thanks again

    Joe

I am not 110% on this but I am pretty sure that you are graded on all the events combined with a total time for all.

(I.E.)hose pull 18:20 plus stair climb 42:10 plus donut lift 15:33 plus monkey bars 11:41 etc... equals a total of 87:04 or 1:27:04 and that gets graded amongst all who took the physical then they average it in with the written to come up with a total grade and placement on the list.

Thats why it is very important to do well on both the written and the physical and for those who scored a couple of points lower on the written may be able to make up a few on the physical

  11. 10-8 IS CORRECT----REMEMBER EACH OF THE NAMED CITIES IN THE VULCAN SUIT BASICALLY MADE A DIFFENT AGREEMENT IN THEIR CONSENT DECREE. SOME AVERAGE THE SCORE WHILE OTHERS HAVE PASS THE WRITEN AND THE WHOLE MARK IS ON THE AGILITY. HOWEVER 10-8 DISCRIBES THE NEW ROCHELLE SITUATION VERY WELL AND THAT IS THE WAY HIRING HAS BEEN DONE FOR 25 YEARS OR MORE, THE AVERAGE OF BOTH SCORES ON WRITTEN AND AGILITY.

yes I agree with you snotty...

I know for sure that mount vernon and white plains is pass or fail everyone who passes gets a 70% and is measured on how well they do on the physical and this was in part of the Vulcan decree

and by the way I know it sounds weird but I just noticed that you joined the board slightly ahead of me. you are one number ahead on the same day!

  12. pass written get invited to physical..grades should arrive sometime in August(past procedures)

practice physical in september (highly recommended) actual physical usually 2nd and 3rd weekend in october new list to superceed old list on or around January 27th 2007 priority is given to RESIDENTS of New Rochelle as a residency list is established 1st. after all residents who pass are established in number order then the NON-RESIDENT list starts

    50% written 50% physical

physical as every other city consists of timed events and every 1/10 of a second counts simple math you do well on the written and are in excellent shape and do extremely well on the physical you should place in top 5 and with any luck you will be hired in the spring and Join a PREMIER DEPARTMENT

    hope this helps
