  2. Yesterday was the Annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run.

Stephen, a member of Squad Co. 1, ran through the tunnel on 9/11 and never returned, along with 342 other brothers.

Members of the Elmsford Fire Dept ran in the event in memory of Lt. Andy Fredericks, Squad Co. 18, our first seminar speaker.

With FDNY Firefighters lining the tunnel exit, with 343 American flags and 343 banner/photos of all the fallen brothers. The FDNY Emerald Society Pipe Band performing. FDNY rigs sounding air horns and sirens. Big crowds cheering the runners along the way.

It is truly an inspiring event.

If you have never participated, you should really consider it.

    "Never forget 9/11"

  3. 911 call reporting a "house fire" at 24 North Mortimer Ave, adjacent to November's major fire.

Found to be a candle, in a locked bedroom, which had burned down to the end and ignited its plastic container,

producing enough smoke to activate a smoke detector.

The bedroom door was forced, burning contents taken outside and house vented.

    All units in service.

  4. This is not about people who just want to go get their white helmet dirty as someone mentioned. If you look at the protocol for incident managment, it defines how many chief officers are recommended at different levels.

    Biglew makes an excellent point.

With more and more departments actively using the Incident Command System, there are many jobs for many chiefs.

Personally, I have served in a number of different capacities on mutual aid, ranging from Staging to Accountability to Safety to Division Supervision, etc, based on the needs of the Incident Commander.

  5. On Tuesday, November 20th, at 4:36 AM, the Elmsford Fire Dept responded to the report of a possible house fire.

Upon arrival, we found the original structure fully involved, with heavy extension into the attic of Exposure D.

Both homes were modulars, with lightweight wood truss roof construction and lightweight wood truss floor construction, in some parts of the structures, but not all. Apparently some of the prefab boxes were standard floor construction and some wood truss, in a mix and match type situation; with particle board throughout rather than plywood.

Early recognition of lightweight construction, caused us to begin an exterior only operation on both structures. Shortly after this decision was made, the entire roof of Exposure D collapsed casatrophically.

These structures are really bad news: they burn very hot and very fast, in addition to collapsing very early into operations.

Extreme caution needs to be exercised when operating at them.

    Stay safe,

    Syd Henry

    Assistant Chief

    Elmsford Fire Dept.

  6. LPFire, I agree with the majority of what you say, and in that line the lessening of standards to allow more women into the ranks has demeaned the accomplishments of the ones that are there for the job and do it right. The same applies to any group that requires the job to weaken to meet their needs. Establish a minimum standard for ALL employees and then there will be no argument as to who can do the job and who is there for headlines. I've met women who are perfectly capable ff's and more than a few men who shouldn't be anywhere near the fire floor. It goes both ways.

    You are absolutely right, Partyrock.

    One standard for ALL.

The same is true on the Police Job.

I worked with some women who were really good cops, and some men who shouldn't have been on the job.

    Stay safe,

    Fireman488

  8. On Sunday, September 30th, 12 members of the Elmsford Fire Department, along with family members and friends, participated in the 6th Annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run.

    Stephen Siller Run

The 5K run/walk retraces the steps that Firefighter Siller, FDNY Squad Co. 1, took on 9/11/01, when he ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center Towers, and was subsequently killed in the line of duty.

More than 22,000 runners and walkers to took to the streets on a beautiful and inspirational day, first going through the tunnel, which was lined with uniformed FDNY firefighters holding 343 American flags and 343 photo banners of all the 9/11 deceased firefighters.

Exiting the tunnel, participants were greeted by tunes from the FDNY Emerald Society Pipe Band.

Traveling along the Hudson River, they were saluted by streams from FDNY fireboat: Marine Co. 1.

Finally they crossed the finish line under a large American flag, which was hung between the aerial ladders of FDNY Ladder Co. 10 and the Roselle, NJ, Ladder Company.

A large street fair followed, with lots of great food, beverage and friendship, during which they were addressed by members of the Siller family, former Mayor Rudy Guiliani, the FDNY Commissioner and the FDNY Chief of Department.

A was truly a great day!!!

  9. WESCO was the premiere firefighting business for years, in this area, going back to the 1950's, under the original ownership of Bernie Rosenblatt, North Tarrytown Fire Dept. Ex-chief and located at the corner of Valley Ave and Wildey St, Tarrytown.

Bernie relocated to Kaldenberg Place in the early 1970's, I believe, prior to selling the business and retiring. It remained open under the new ownership for some time, prior to going out of business eventually, sometime in the late 1980's, I believe.

All dates are approximate...recollections fade over time.....LOL

  10. Great post.

We all know those who are fumbling with their gear or SCBA or just nowhere to be found when something needs to be done.

But, as previously stated, there is a difference between being knowledgeably aggressive and recklessly foolhardly.

    Stay safe.

  11. I've heard Elmsford come up in a couple different talks about response times. Always positive. So how do you guys do it? Is it just luck and you happen to have many dedicated members, is there crew assignments, crew quarters; whats the secret?

    Thanks for the compliments.

How we do it? Dedicated members (especially those who are available during the day, a real core of good people).

As well as night time crews for Fire and EMS (11 pm to 6 am).

Thanks again for the kind words.

    Stay safe.

  12. The problem will always be that the VOLLIES don't want to give up their VAC's to paid people and the PAID companies don't want to merge because they will lose money.

After seeing the EMS SYSTEM in SC I came back here and asked why is this place so backwards. Then I thought to myself that it must be WESTCHESTER. This was probably 8-10yrs ago. I can agrue till the cows come home about a COUNTY wide system or even a FULLY PAID MT PLEASANT system and it won't do any good. My blood pressure will just go up.

How about all the VOLLIES on here be honest about how many times they couldn't get a crew out in a given year. Give the reasons and time of day that was. I know that I am going to figure it out on my end. Let's just see how bad it is.

I can't speak for other agencies.

But our all volunteer Fire/EMS Department covers its own runs. When we call for mutual aid, it is because our two rigs are on other runs.

Also, the bulk of our mutual aid runs are to assist a paid service.

    Go figure!!!!
