And dont forget the little money maker in PA, Hershey Park. They soak you for everything you have got. Boycott the theme park as well as the candy.

How about this. If you want to volunteer, DON't apply to be paid. If you can't follow a simple by law of the union that is "supposed to be" protecting you, then stay a volunteer.
-
"If you are hurt doing Volunteer Assignments" If that is their (The Union's) take (Being injured off the job) shouldn't it state that you shouldn't be allowed to do ANY work off the job then? I know a lot of union guys that work side jobs, most everyone actually, and being a roofer or carpenter, you could fall off a ladder doing a side job and get hurt. How is that different ?You can also be hit by a bus crossing the street. Should we stop walking in public? PLEASE. It has nothing to do with the "VOLUNTEER SYSTEM", that everyone says is so great. It is the professional fire fighters union telling their membership not to volunteer. Plain and simple. When you become a career guy, its time to withdraw from active service in your volunteer company. You can be a social member and be involved in the company. And if the "VOLUNTEER SYSTEM" is so great, why cant they attract and retain volunteers? Because it is not like it was 20 or 30 years ago, when most local guys could leave their jobs to go on calls. The world is going corporate, and thats where the money is, and thats what everyone is chasing. When you get less than 1 volunteer per call on average, it is time to rethink your fire protection plan. When the volunteer chiefs ADMIT, that the volunteers can't respond to the call volume, It is time to rethink your fire protection. Time to close up the club house, and get serious about public safety, which is what fire fighting is all about, not parades and picnics.

Volunteer met requirement for two at fire scene
October 2, 2007
To the editor:
I write in defense of James Fountain, a career firefighter, who was cited in a union complaint for violating the "two in, two out" safety standard for fighting fires (Advocate news story, Sept. 26).
I arrived at the scene of the Sept. 9 fire on Courtland Avenue as the career men from Engine 32 in Glenbrook were disembarking from their vehicle. I put on my gear, radioed dispatch of my arrival, was acknowledged and then reported to the leader-engine driver and pump operator, Rob Panapada, before heading to the house to aid Fountain.
He entered the building first, but was aware of my arrival, and I was seconds behind him into the house. With Fountain at the nozzle and me behind him working the hose, we moved through the building together, ultimately to the attic area, to find the source of the fire.
While inside, I heard Engine 32 report to dispatch that he had only one man inside. I obviously knew this to be false, but there was little I could do to correct it, as we were occupied fighting the fire. In retrospect, I regret not having the opportunity to do so, as it would have absolved firefighter Fountain from any appearance of violating the standards of operation of his fire house, and there would be no basis for a union complaint.
What I don't understand is why a false incident report was filed. There is a procedure for accountability at all fire scenes; it does not matter if the men are under your direct command or not. In the case of the Glenbrook fire, reporting one man in the building when there was known to be two potentially endangered both lives.
It would be unfortunate if this is another instance of the union trying to discredit the volunteer professionals. It's time for these divisive tactics to stop and for us to work together.

I'm sure this is going to clear many things up - Accountability, Command issues, Radio performance, etc. - To quote Navin R. Johnson: "Good things are gonna start happening to me now."

Let me make something clear here. The profanity rule applies to THIS thread too. Anyone who wants to push it, consider youselves warned.A threat if I ever heard one of a constitutional right of freedom of speech. Careful where we tread brothers.

I can't believe the KOOKS in San Fransisco don't complain that the fire department Kills trees to make their ladders. They make a big stink about everything else.
-
The F word is accepted in fire house culture, so why not here. The chaplin of my department said he looks around if he doesn't hear it dropped in the first five minutes to make sure he is in the firehouse. I believe that if you drop an "occasional" curse, it is acceptable, but constant vulgarity should not be tollerated. Just my 2 cents.

Rest in Peace Brother May God be with the Beddia family at this time.

Why could't you run such a competition but only allow actions that would be allowed in Real World Ops? It has been brought up that training should reflect the real thing, could not competition reflect good training in the same way?As for set up time, If you had a large enough area, could you not set up multiple colisions far enough from each other that they could either be worked simultaneously or in sequence, with the judges and audience moving from area to area, kind of like a golf game?
I have never seen one of these compititions but I think the potential is there to make this an excelent training tool. The key is to train towards real life operations, not to train towards competition rules, otherwise the event looses it's most important value.
REAL WORLD OPS? Alan real world ops do not apply to these extrication competitions. The city of Stamford had an extrication team in the late 90's that traveled to Mississagua Canada, Nashville TN, our state fire school, and Stamford even hosted a northeast regional qualifying competiton. Are there things that can be learned? Of Course, but not from these "set up" competitions. TERC, Transportation Emergency Response Committe, is the organization who runs these expo's, and they are so far from REAL WORLD OPS it is not even funny. It is geared up to a set of standards that TERC decides, not real world standards. The reason we stopped going to the competitions, is because it wasn't REAL WORLD. We were told flat out by one of the judges at a competition, that we had one of the top scenarios that he had ever judged, and we were a real world team, but this was a last chance qualifier for a team that needed to qualify for the national competition. THAT left a very sour taste with the team, and was decided the next year that we would no longer participate in fantasy competitions, we would just stick to REAL WORLD OPS. Terc has their own ideas of what real world extrication is, and it tends to lean heavily towards the Brightons and Chili's that "PLAY THE GAME". It is not a game, its real.
P.S. Idon't know how a BUFF such as you didn't know about our competition. LOL just kidding!!!!

It should be a 1 3/4" line, not the damn booster some still pull.
Do they still have booster lines? Maybe that is another topic, BUT the line is pulled to protect the crew working if the STUFF hits the fan. The car fire would be second in priorities, the safety of the crew is TOP priority. My 2 cents.

You can get the steaks and sandwiches as well as some other items at their new store on Bruce Park Ave, just across the street from the Bruce Park Grill. I believe that the Maneros owned the building in Greenwich, just sold due to lack of family involvement. I don't know if the one in Pompano Fla is still opened. That restaurant was opened for all the transplanted snow birds from the northeast. Still one of the greatest restaurants EVER. Steak and onion sangwich with a gorgonzolla salad on the side. Damn now I am hungry. Stay safe all on this joyous 4th of July.

And i suppose you must believe the other propogandist Al Gore with his "sci fi" thriller an inconvienient myth. These left wing nut jobs are trying to scare the world into believing what they say is gospel. Do you believe 9-11 was a production of our government? Another crap story from the far left kooks. And to advertise the banner on this website is in poor taste. I thought this website dealt with real fire fighting and EMS topics, not spun to the left propoganda from a proverbial liar in that fat a@@ hole Michael Moore. Pleae lets stick with relevant topics. I have been a fan of these forums, but if this continues........ -

uno you can't fix stupid. Its just not plausible
HERE'S YOUR SIGN.

Perhaps while were at it we can still get people to stop using 10 codes like we are suppose too, and to stop saying "respond with caution." What a ridiculous statement. How about "respond non-emergency" or "units can come in easy" or something to that effect.
10-4 on that K. OOps I mean I agree K.

iF IT WAS MY FAMILY IN THE CAR ECHY, i KNOW HELP WOULD BE NO MORE THAN 5 MINUTES BEHIND ME IF I CALL IT IN LIKE I SHOULD. AND JUST FOR THE RECORD "I DONT TOOT ANY HORNS".
aND cHRIS, WHILE I RESPECT YOUR OPINION, WHY CANT THE BACKFILLING BE DONE ON THE MVA? i AGREE THIS IS GOING IN CIRLES AND CIRCLES, AND JUST BELIEVE THAT YOU SHOULD RESPOND TO WHAT YOU ARE DISPATCHED TO, RELAY THE INFORMATION TO DISPATCH, AND THEY WILL FILL THE CALL FOR THE MVA.
tHATS IT, IM DONE....... NEXT TOPIC PLEASE

RWC call your lawyer back and ask him if he will represent you because you stopped and three firefighters were killed because water supply engine never showed up! Once you are assigned, you are assigned. I don't care if you are going to an alarm that comes in three times a day and is always a false call. It will only take that one time when we get complacent. I remember as a rookie always getting calls at an old folks home, that never proved to be anything. Then one day, IT happened. A major fire that killed a few elderly residents. I am sure there were many riding to that call that said" SAME OLD S*. You never know what is waiting for you, so you must follow the organizational flow chart that is sending you on the fire, and call in the car accident, and give it to the next due units. Its crappy, but what if you are the reason for hurting or killing your brothers because you thought the other call was "MORE IMPORTANT".

HFD BRAVO. I could not agree with you more. This country was founded by immigrants... LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Come through the front door, we will welcome you with open arms. Come through the back door and demand your rights and disrespect the country that offers freedom, I DON'T THINK SO. It is about time we shut the door on illegals once and for all. Yes Seth they are humans, but so are the thousands that are doing it the right way. Waiting their turn, not breaking our laws. Thanks to the ACLU, illegal aliens have more rights than any of us that were born in this country. Perhaps we could put a N before ACLU for Non American Civil Liberties Union. Its time to shut the borders and seal the leaks. It will be our pourous borders that will bring the next terrorists (if not already here) to this country. Our priorities have become pretty clouded in this country by special interest groups wanting their fifteen minutes of fame. Perhaps a build up of military on our borders with a shoot to kill order would change the illegals minds about breaking into our country, and breaking our laws.
