  1. When I was in Cancun a few years ago for spring break the police would patrol with ALL of the lights on didn't make much sense to me how do people know when they are getting pulled over?!?!

I lived in Puerto Rico for a few years while in the Navy. The Caribbean countries did this because many people who live in the hills did not have electricity and definitely no phones. The PR police/EMS/FD ride around with their lights activated so people can see them and flag them down if needed. You only had to yield to them if their siren was acitivated.

Spotlighting those who go beyond the call of duty to make New York better

Like a Jenga puzzle, the townhouse pancaked by the collapsed crane and transformed into a pile of bricks, wood, beams, metal pipes and furniture could have shifted and toppled if the wrong piece was moved.

But Fire Department paramedics Juan Henriquez and Marco Girao didn't hesitate at the precarious disaster site after the East Side crane disaster that left seven people dead. They climbed into the wreckage and helped save two lives.

They also made a little New York history: It was the first time that crush medicine was applied successfully in the field, according to FDNY officials.

Henriquez and Girao immediately treated two men, following a new protocol to avert crush syndrome, which can occur when victims are pinned for an extended period and blood flow is cut off, turning the trapped blood toxic.

They stayed with the injured men while firefighters extricated them, treating them, reassuring and encouraging them as debris fell all around.

For performing their job under dire conditions, Henriquez and Girao are the Daily News Heroes of the Month.

  3. I truly doubt that a private employer would allow an employee to leave, unless they were a volunteer also. But I do know that many towns and villages have it in their policies that their respective employees can respond to fire and ambulance calls within their area, while working. This was set-up to encourage employees to first volunteer and second to live in the area.

  4. Reports: Conn. police officer's death may have been suicide

    March 25, 2008

NORWALK, Conn. (AP) _ Norwalk police are considering evidence that the death of an 11-year police veteran may have been suicide, according to published reports.

The New Haven Register on Tuesday quoted a confidential message written by Norwalk's police chief to chiefs throughout the state about the investigation of Officer Matthew Morelli's death. Morelli, 38, died early Friday in a secluded parking lot in south Norwalk, about 50 miles northeast of New York City, after telling dispatchers he was investigating suspicious activity.

  5. I was a police sergeant in north Georgia and have family still living in south Georgia. I can personally attest to their training and equipment. While around the Atlanta area is nice and their equipment is top notch, this is not the case in the rest of the state. I have become friends with a group of volunteers in south Georgia and assisted in helping them get some grants for equip etc... They run over 100 calls/yr with a 1978 pumper. I can't remember what make and model, but it was old and it looked old. They don't have much and I would imagine when a new chief comes in and wants to mess with them, then I would leave also. The state training academy is in Forsyth, Georgia. The firefighters go through excellent training there, but I don't know about their in-house stuff. I'm now back in NY and volunteering again. My company is getting a new engine this year and a gift of our old engine (1984 Hahn) to them would be like getting a new Cadillac.

  6. I remember there was a previous post relating to this. And I'll say it again, nothing beats an engine or a ladder truck stretched across a couple of lanes. There's been times where I've asked them to open a lane so we could get traffic moving, but for the most part, I don't mess with them. And, I've also never had a problem having FD respond to anything on the Deegan. Especially in the north Bronx. They usually stay until we're ready to open things up without question!

  7. "

It's funny you bring this up, there are a few people that i know, myself included that have gotten yelled at for discussing issues on this site. Noone has ever been "Banned from posting here", but yelled at yes. "

Yelled at! If your dad is your chief, then maybe you could yelled at, but if he/she is not my father or mother I might put them back in their place.

Remember that some of these older chiefs and commissioners were in their positions before the internet and these public forums. The only time they had to answer for their actions or inactions was at monthly council or trustee meetings and monthly fire company meetings. They usually had pre-warning as well.

Now, with sites like this it makes it very easy for anyone, pretty much anonymously, to post anything they want. There are plenty of verified members on this site who don't list there location etc... It's really easy to bash when you're anonymous. I hope that most people who do bash, or criticize or whatever you want to call it, do stand up at their monthly meeting and say the same thing. If not, then you're only proving that you post here because of the anonymity! If I were a chief, and thank god I'm not, I'd be a little upset with someone who logs onto a website and publicly speaks out or airs dirty laundry in my department. Who can blame them? Half the time you don't even know who it is that's criticizing you. You can try to figure it out by there log-in name, location and profession, but many people leave stuff out or change this info intentionally.

There was a topic recently about using your name as your ID. That would cut out a lot of criticism!

NEW ROCHELLE - A New Rochelle police sergeant has been suspended while police investigate a 17-year-old girl's claim that he raped her after responding to a domestic dispute between her and her boyfriend, Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll said today.

The sergeant was not on duty the morning of Feb. 8 when officers initially responded to the girl's Cliff Street home on a report that she had a fight with her boyfriend. The boyfriend was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, and later was released on bail.

That evening, he reportedly returned to the apartment and threatened her again. Police were called and the sergeant, now on duty, and three other officers responded, and the boyfriend was arrested again, this time on a criminal contempt charge.

The girl claims that the sergeant returned early the next morning to her apartment, after he had gone off duty, and raped her.

She first told authorities that on Monday when she went to the Westchester District Attorney's Office and tried to get charges against her boyfriend dropped, Carroll said.

The commissioner discussed the investigation at a news conference at police headquarters this afternoon, where he was joined by Deputy Commissioner Anthony Murphy, Capt. Joseph Schaller, who is overseeing the investigation, and City Manager Charles Strome III.

Carroll said he had never suspended an officer with pay so early in an investigation but did so because the sergeant's continued presence at police headquarters would be a "distraction" because of the nature of the claim against him. The sergeant's name was not mentioned at the press conference. The Journal News is not identifying him because no charges have been filed.

The commissioner said the sergeant, on the force for nine years, has "a sterling record" in the department and has denied the allegations. The sergeant could not be reached for comment today.

Carroll said investigators were trying to assess the girl's credibility and he would not speculate about whether an arrest would be made. "We're going to take our time to cover all bases," he said.

  9. Bomb Squad does not "patrol." They have some detailed areas of attention, but they do not respond to suspicious packages etc... until they are requested. Once it's determined there is a suspicious package etc... then they are requested by ESU or Patrol Supervisor. They are based out of Rodman's Neck on City Island. They have all different types of vehicles ie. trucks, four wheelers, disposal vehicles and trailers, robots etc...

  10. Next week is correct. Some have already received calls. If the hiring is Monday morning, recruits will receive calls all the way up till the morning of the hiring. One of my recruits got a call at 3 am, while at his parents house in Dutchess...

  11. I've been involved in plenty of taser incidents and have never seen anyone other than the police remove the barbs. In the city, they have to be vouchered after use. So, why would the sergeant, or fortunate cop who grabbed the sergeants taser, let anyone else remove them?!

I also agree with a previous thread which said most of the info we're commenting on is from the newspaper. That's a very one-sided opinion. I feel pretty bad for the SHAC Captain who has been quoted personally by a lot of different people in this thread. I hope they're being careful...
