  1. I dont care about attitudes....I was just posing a question.

Funny how the majority is going with today's firemen...and I agree. But how much merit is there in running 2-3 workers a shift, or a dozen a month....experience is a HUGE advantage in the fire service...

Today - you can make Chief of Deparmtnet in ALOT of towns with little to no REAL fire experience...

But wouldn't you say that attitude makes a difference when it comes to the firefighter? I can have the best of everything, equipment, training, funding, manning, you name it, but without a proper attitude none of this means anything. Wouldn't you agree?

  2. If someone has taken the class with Larry Davis or has any of his readings one thing he did refer to was what your actual dump time is vs. backing up and using the rear dump on the tanker. Take your tanker in question and clock the two dumps. Then set up your porta tank and do a drive up and a back up. I did this over in sullivan county and we found with our tanker it was easier and quicker to pull up and dump. The time it took to back up and line up with the porta tank was more then the smaller side dump.

  3. Nothing for nothing, but when I was young we didn't care about a winter storm. If a nor easter was coming mom told me I had to get the snow blower out. Anytime it snowed I had to get up and help the 74 y\o bus driver put the chains on the bus because her hands couldn't do it in the cold. People stayed home or put chains on the car to go out in the snow.

It's snow, it falls, and we bury ourselves out of it and move on. Why do we put out the alarm and batten down the hatches for something that is suppose to happen in the north east?

  4. I hate these types of posts as they are seldom productive and are the exact reason why many shy away from this site..... The ill informed trying to get you to see things their way..............

This struck a nerve...... "The Wappingers area has more rescue trucks than FDNY! Is that practical?" To answer your question - YES ....... This is a ridiculous comparison to make.....

There is no comparison..... Two completely different operations as well as different uses of the vehicles....... Some of these departments cover large response areas (My dept covers ~20-plus square miles) so it's not like their is a Rescue every 2 miles.... My department added Hurst equipment to an Engine to supplement what our Rescue carries as we have had occasions in the past where we needed extrication at two incidents or the Rescue was committed at another incident.... Now we can handle two AA's at once....... The other thing you have to think about is response time..... Yes you can call M/A, but how long will it take them to get there especially in bad weather? And they're usually tied up with their own incidents....It's not like the response areas are one square mile.... So is there duplication of equipment in the Wappingers area? Maybe from behind your keyboard...... But out in the real world, I don't think so........An maybe the next time the roads are icy, you should listen to the DC Dispatch and see that all of this over abundance of Rescues in the Wappingers area are all busy going from incident to incident..... Can we compare your Dept. to FDNY? Why not??????? I won't even bother commenting on the original topic.......

My purpose of starting this post is to raise an awarness to what is happening in our county as a whole. As a career firefighter i wear my union hat when I have to. I also don't forget where I came from either. Some have chastised me for this, oh well. We are all here to serve the people who call 911 for assistance.

Did this post turn into pointing fingers? Yes a little bit. Is it right, well I don't know...people can give an opinion and everyone has one. In Dutchess County, if we want to admit it or not, our system is slightly flawed. Why is it we can't have a system like PG County? I don't want to here the response of to many kingdoms or to many egos either.

Why is it that Rombout Drives by the Village of Fishkill Fire Station to go to alarms?

Why does Arlington Drive by The Hooker Ave Fire Station to go to a fire alarm at St. Ann's?

How come in Hyde Park, Roosevelt travels through two fire districts to get to alarms at the CIA?

And in the Wappingers Rt 9 area, the fire departments are varried because of districts. Mr. Johnson I respect your opinion of the abundance of Rescues in the Wappingers Area but why is a New Hackensac Rescue truck coming all the way down to Rt. 9 when Wappingers Falls is right there?

The list could go on and on and i'm sure we can find faults in every fire district and department if we looked at them. We are here to serve people and get resources to help them in a timely mannor. District boundaries and egos should not matter. But they do and my question is why?

  5. Here is a link to an interesting letter to the editor of the Poughkeepsie Journal.

    http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article...06/1004/OPINION

I find it interesting that someone is getting published for some of the corruption that plagues this county when it comes to fire response. I wish the Journal could review all the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th dispatches that happen throughout Dutchess County and the redudancy of fire equipment.

  6. Richmond uses the "quint" concept but it's on the chopping block. I was down there a year ago for interviews and asked them about thier quint concept. The Captain in the interview gave me the company line on how great the concept was. But when I asked him who does what when your first due and mom and the three kids are hanging out the window things started to get interesting. At the end of the interview the Captain said they were looking into getting rid of the quints and going back to engines and trucks. Suprise!

So out the door and down the street I go to Richmond Quint #5. At the time they were running a pierce rear mount tower ladder as their quint. But they were getting a mid mount tower ladder in a couple of months. The senior men of the station generally didn't like the Quints. Biggest complaint was the majority of the quints were too big for the city streets. Thus the small engine that was also in the fire house. One senior man that was working the shift related to me how the saying "jack of all trades, masters of none." is true. Half the time positioning is out of place because of the size of the quints coming in.

I'm not sure if Richmond started to go ahead and do away with the quints. Hopefully they did because it seemed like the officers and the firefighters wanted to go back to the engines and trucks.

  7. What i find odd is that they plan to use a VHF frequency for a coordination channel, when Most of the county's PDs use vhf, and Almost, if not all of the FD's use UHF frequencies. That is just counter-productive

I know this county in some areas is very far ahead when it comes to communications. But I feel from looking at the other counties in the state a lot of them are using the VHF freq. Also, almost everyone has the VHF radio as well for communication with the hospital.
