  1. Arriving on scene, I see the markings out front that represent it is a condemed building. Being that it is my first due, I was already aware of this. Placing the Quint Side A @ A/B Corner or A/D Corner I have the operator rasie the ladder to the roof.

When greeted by the person I attempt to gather information from the escaped sqatter exact location in the building these other people are, their condition (cons, stoned, etc) when he/she left them. I then order the truck w-o the leaving the safety of the ladder open the roof. Once the roof is open, I would then direct the crew to open the top floor windows and begin fire suppression from the exterioir. For no reason will I send ff's into the involved floors. If they saw a victim within reach or feel that they can safely get to them in a rapid method without risking definte ff lives.. get em.. any farther than that NO WAY..

If there is that much smoke showing as seth described.. if these individuals were on the fire floor on arrival.. they have probably succumded to the smoke at that point. I would much rather answer for 3-4 squatters that broke into a condemed building, lit a fire, while committing crimes....than why i have 4 dead firemen.

The remainder of the crews from the next arriving Engine establish water supply, and start to ladder the building and force the covered windows open to see if they can locate victims without making entry. ONLY.. AND ONLY IF there is a victim visiable from the windows outside will I even slightly consider entry into the building, but there are many other factors.. the advancement of the fire, smoke signals, etc...

Once those operations are complete... Call the sally wagon.. Set up the aerials... get mass transit for rehab & warmth.. prepare for a long night...

  2. The red X... i saw it the first time.. I'm not sure exactly what it means... I'm assuming it means that the building is condemned?

    Good Job Bibbles..

For your information here is the explaination...

In the United States, markings on searched structures are used on the fronts of structures and are standardized as follows:

A single diagonal slash indicates that a search in the building is in progress. This is used to indicate searcher locations and to avoid duplication of the search effort.

An X inside a square means "Dangerous - Do Not Enter!"

An X with writing around it means "Search Completed", with the time (and the date if appropriate) written above the X, the team conducting the search written to the left side of the X, the results of the search (number of victims removed, number of dead, type of search such as primary or secondary) written below the X, and any additional information noted about the structure to the right of the X.

  3. Photo 2 Risks..

1 - The Lean on the BRAVO exposure (we are looking at it from CHARLIE side).

2 - The nice high quality wooden porches to burn up when fire vents out side CHARLIE

3 - Seth.. Do you have Side ALPHA Photos.

    4. Now that I look at it closer.. There is a great possibility that this building is a U shape. Seth, can you shed some light on this interesting building.

    5. That tree.. that is a first for me. That could have roots growing into the walls and mortar work etc and be a significant risk to structual stability. hmmm

  4. I'm pretty sure photo 2 is definitely leaning a lot! so that'd be an issue, for picture one, the first thing i notice is that everything is boarded up, so that'd block your escape routes if you did go in. I feel like it would go up pretty quickly and most likely be an exterior operation, assuming there are no occupants (which there shouldn't be but you never know)

good job bibbles but you missed what i am looking for..

  5. OK guys & gals..

x635 took some great pictures during his photo hunt.

Picture #1 - Barn Style Wodden Structure - This poses risks in many ways. There is something in this picture is very important to the first arriving. Who know's what it is? Those that know the answer, don't let's see who see the item.

After the answers arrive.. What are some other risks with this structure.

    wow1.jpg

Picture #2 - This one is even more interesting. There are hazards out the ying yang here. Who can name them?

    wow2.jpg

    Seth -

As always.. thank you for sharing your images and finds with us.

i have heard that it is sitting in the suthphen grave yard at the factory with the aerial device missing.

It was a design by one of the elder sutphens, it obviously never took off. Cool Concept.

Now.. If they only could make a tillered aerialscope.. now that would be the best :-)

Receiver named for Elite Fire Apparatus

By Kent Tempus, Leader editor - The Shawano (Wisconsin) Leader - November 8, 2007

A receiver has been appointed for financially-troubled Elite Fire Apparatus of Tilleda, which apparently has all but shut down.

The appointment was made Friday by Shawano County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Grover at the request of Associated Bank, N.A., of Green Bay, which says it’s owed $5.55 million by Elite.

Grover’s order said it appears the plaintiff “has established that the defendants are insolvent or in imminent danger of insolvency.”

Also, a wage lien of $1.6 million was filed by the state Department of Workforce Development in Shawano County Circuit Court, to secure wages due employees or former employees of the company.

DWD received a business closing notification complaint on Oct. 11, said DWD spokesperson Jessica Erickson. Under state law, companies with 50 or more employees are required to provide 60 days notice if they closing or will have a mass layoff, she said.

DWD also received several complaints of unpaid wages, Erickson said. DWD investigated the complaints and filed the lien on Oct. 19.

It’s not clear whether the plant is open, and calls to Elite’s office and the home of company president David Moser were not returned on Wednesday.

“It’s my understanding, according to Mr. Moser, there’s still a skeleton crew carrying on some operations,” said Steven Cerasoli, an Appleton attorney representing Associated Bank.

According to Grover’s order, the request to place Elite in receivership was agreed to by Elite Fire and Moser Group. Inc., the defendants in the case. Moser Group is based at Moser’s home in Appleton.

In a receivership, the assets of a company are placed under the control of a receiver who administers the assets for the court, Cerasoli said. The receiver manages the assets as well as can be to preserve their value so they can ultimately be sold for the benefit of the debtor’s creditors, he explained.

At least five other companies have sued Elite, saying the company owes money for services rendered, according to court records. One, Consolidated Construction Co. of Appleton, was granted a judgment Friday of just over $201,000. Consolidated Construction filed suit in January, seeking payment of the unpaid balance of a contract to construct its 48,000 square foot facility at Tilleda.

Whether Elite will permanently close has yet to be decided, Cerasoli said.

“It’s everyone hope there’s some enterprise value there, and that someone will buy it as a going concern and continue its operations,” he said. “It’s premature to conclude if the whole thing will be shut down and terminated.”

Grover named Michael S. Polsky of Milwaukee as receiver. Polsky is to notify all known creditors, who will then have three months to file claims with the court.

In the meantime, the receiver will evaluate the business and “if there’s any realistic possibility of completing any work in progress and continuing business operations as a buyer is being sought,” Cerasoli said.

Elite Fire Apparatus was established in 2003, building a variety of fire and rescue equipment.

    Tilleda company goes into receivership

    The Associated Press - Appleton Post-Crescent - November 8, 2007

SHAWANO — A receiver has been appointed for a Tilleda maker of fire and rescue equipment at the request of a Green Bay bank that says it is owed almost $5.6 million.

Companies in receivership have their assets managed by a representative of the court.

Elite Fire Apparatus was placed in receivership after at least five companies sued, saying the 4-year-old company owed them money, according to court records.

Company president David Moser did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday. Shawano County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Grover’s order said Elite Fire and Moser Group agreed to the request for a receiver.

Moser Group is based at Moser’s home in Appleton.

Associated Bank of Green Bay said it was owed $5.55 million when it requested the receivership.

Another company, Consolidated Construction Co. of Appleton, was granted a judgment of just over $201,000 on Friday. It filed suit in January seeking full payment for construction of Elite’s 48,000-square-foot facility at Tilleda.

In addition, the state Department of Workforce Development has filed a wage lien of $1.6 million to secure pay due Elite employees and former employees.

Meanwhile, it was not clear whether Elite was still operating or at what level.

State law requires companies with 50 or more employees to provide 60 days notice if they are closing or will have a mass layoff.

DWD received a complaint on Oct. 11 that Elite had failed to provide that notice, DWD spokesperson Jessica Erickson said. It also received complaints about unpaid wages. It investigated those and filed its lien on Oct. 19.

“It’s my understanding, according to Mr. Moser, there’s still a skeleton crew carrying on some operations,” Steven Cerasoli, an Appleton attorney representing Associated Bank, told the Shawano Leader.

Grover named Michael S. Polsky of Milwaukee as Elite’s receiver. Polsky is supposed to notify all the company’s creditors, who then have three months to file claims.

  9. Hello,

I was curious if anyone had used a manifold / portable hydrant at a real job? I can see some potential benefits of such a device but I was really looking to see if anyone had actually used it for real. Or is this one of those specialty pieces that gets used once in a hundred years?

    Thanks.

I can say I did about 12 years ago.

    Crafton Boro, Pittsburgh, PA.

4 Houses on Fire - No Alley to the Rear -

I was the chauffer on the first arriving second alarm engine - we layed out from a hydrant on the parallel street to the houses that were behind the ones involved. We hand jacked 2 - 100' sections of 5" to (2) manifolds along with the 4 crosslays from our engine. We then had the other arriving second alarm units assisgned to our sector bring their crosslays to the rear and run them off our maifolds. They worked well. There were not too many complaints from the operating crews about pressure. Most were using smooth bore nozzles. The crews had their hands full. There was a significant amount of fire for all to take care of. I do not think that pressure on the line was a top priority on their minds.

I have read in various fire service publications about departments in urban areas that have developed a hose hand cart and appliance cart for their shopping malls. On the appliance carts, they have placed several of these for various tactical considerations. We have a large mall and conference / convention center in the town that I have been a firefighter for about the last 12 years and we have not done that. We have a company that operates a mini pumper designed for use in the mall.

I feel it is one of those items that you may only use once in a hundred years, but something your going to kick yourself in the behind for when you finally need it. It is heavy and expensive, but worth the expense. Train with it often to keep your operators and firefighters familiar with it.

    Types Of Calls for Use:

Haz Mat: Portable Hydrant for Decon Area

Large Fires with long stretches: Run 5" to it (no friction loss) then 4 same length layouts (if situation allows) to the fire.

    Rural Water Movement: Barns Etc:

Just a few from the top of my head.

Well good luck, hope that rambling helped you.
