  1. My condolences to the families of these horrific accidents!

I always place a wheelchock under the tires of my minivan when the kids are playing around it in the driveway, cus my driveway pitches hard downhill. Cannot trust the brakes or park gear! I always worry about the things happening to my kids that I see in the field, I guess it is a normal response for someone who does this kind of thing for a living.

  2. This fire turned out to not be much. On arrival, we found a wooden facade on the A-Side of an 4 story ordinary well involved. Truck 2 made quick work of it and Engine 2 & 5 stretched in and checked for extension into the interior which was negative.

The biggest challenge was the stifling heat!!!

2 shots for your review. Sorry about the after-the-fact photography, I was working at this one and had to wait til an "under control" to begin the photographic process. More shots on www.local830.org in the photo gallery.

  3. This is unbelievable...and I am sure many already know. Bridgeport PD recently rolled out an entire fleet of 2007 Dodge Charger Patrol Cars. I read it in today's CT Post. They had a blessing of them by their chaplain yesterday and they commissioned the fleet. The paper said they bought and commissioend 70 cars, all at the same time. I will keep an eye out for them so I can post a picture, the one in the Post looked good, it seems that the Chargers are definitely the wave of the future for PD Packages.

    Just another cop-car buff...

    Seth,

  5. As far as I know, one of the engines was bought with money raised through donations, and the other was bought through the town apparatus replacement budget.

One has to question the prudency of buying 2 identical engines for a department that has a relatively light call load...couldn't those funds be used on other important department needs?

  6. Can anyone shed any light on how Darien Fire Department was able to purchase identical and I am sure, expensive, engines??? I mean, kudos to them for getting that accomplished, but I just don't see how a town would buy 1 department 2 brand new engines. Maybe they got a grant or something???

By the way. they are really pretty trucks...

We need to get that purchasing agent a job in Norwalk!!!

  7. Stamford's mutual aide could be provided by a number of departments. Stamford Fire and Rescue runs Engine #1-7, Truck #1-3, a Rescue, and a shift commander. First, one must not forget all of the other departments in Stamford besides Stamford Fire & Rescue. There is Turn of River FD #1 and #2, Springdale, Glenbrook, Belltown, and Long Ridge FD. Like what was said previously, with the staffing problems and budget cuts, who knows what you'll get from them. Springdale runs a Stamford Fire Rescue engine as Engine #7 in addition to the volly side of the department. In addition, you could get mutual aide from New Canaan or any 3 of Darien's departments depending on where the fire is in Stamford.

Anyone remember the fire on Canal Street not too long ago that burnt down all of the furniture warehouses? Mutual aide up the wazoo covered the city during that time. I even remember hearing Darien truck 20 going on a medical! But with all I've read recently, who the heck knows what you're gonna get when $hit hits the fan on the side of the volly depts.

I can tell you this...you will get less than what you would have a month ago before city administrators laid off five career guys from Belltown and Glenbrook (both areas VERY close to downtown Stamford.) As for the volunteer side of it, they even admit that you never know what their response will be like. I worked as a paid driver in Belltown for 2 years from 1995-1997 and we went downtown for M/A and to cover firehouses a lot. I even went to West Side Station 3 one day with Belltown Ladder 45 to cover during a huge fire. Contrary to what people are saying and want you to believe, the fire services in Stamford DO INDEED work togehter for the common good and safety of the public, they are just in some trying times right now...too many opposing opinions and they ALL are making sensible points. While I am on the subject, I hope the laid off brothers get their jobs and livelihoods back soon, and I don't think Local 786 needs to try to justify thier manpower, the facts and buildings they protect speak for themselves. Just thought I'd ring in. Stay safe all...

  10. Recently, on a quick trip through New Haven, I saw an auto body shop or something that had a bunch of new Danbury Police Cruisers that were all painted up and they were Chargers. They looked nice. I had no camera with me...(bad move). If I get back up there for business, I will shoot a few pictures of them. Looks like Danbury is spending some cash on PD & FD lately...

  12. As promised, I am posting pics of York (Maine) Fire Dept.'s 1980 ALF 85' Snorkel. It is still in service, although, the day I went there to shoot it, it wouldn't start...Nothing against York Fire, it was just one of those things. Anyway, I was told that before York Fire got it, it served as Burlington, Vermont Truck 1. It is a very unique looking rig. There are apparently no plans to replace it anytime soon, although they should replace the batteries...

  13. I recently taught a cadet program for the Connecticut Fire Academy. About 20 different departments were represented. While I cannot remember exactly where they were from, my boss at the CFA probably can enlighten you on departments that have thier acts together on a cadet program. His name is Mark Salafia and he can be reached at 860-627-6363. Just ask for him from the operator.

  14. Cape Neddick Lighthouse

    Is it still functional?

I was down at the Montauk Point Lighthouse (Long Island)

    a couple weeks ago.

    SWEET PICS!

Thanks. The lighthouse is fully functional and is 100% automated. No one lives on the island since about 1980 when the Government took over the place, now the US Coast Gaurd is in charge of it. It is a 6 second 1 blink light visible for miles.

  15. It was brought to my attention that a member of this network has information contrary to what I posted about the history of BFD Tower Ladder 45. He informed me that he has undisputeable proof that this rig served as TL-138 (Corona Tigers) in the FDNY and not TL-157. I guess I can't argue with facts, its just wierd because the day of the wetdown, several members from Ladder 157 attended to see the work that was done to restore it for BFD. One of the guys from that company gave us a copy of Fire Engineering with a cover shot of TL-157 working at multiple alarm fire in Brooklyn. It was given to my father and he gave it to me and I still have it in my collection...It is sad to come to the realization that the cover that I cherished for so many years is not what I originally though it was.

    Oh well...

  16. 2 more...this will be it from York Beach...

    York Village to follow.

The Lighthouse on Cape Neddick appears on thier patch. It is the most frequently photographed lighthouse in the US. They made a float of it for parades and public relations events. The official name is Cape Neddick Light. Locals refer to it as "Nubble Light".
