  1. Having read your previous post i do agree it is time that all concerned take interest in the job. As you have said there are many streets esp. in Da Bronx that get mispronounced by all, not just dispatchers. Maybe a list should be made up and given to newly assigned people to inform them of such. Marion and Marmion come to mind and many others as you have mentioned. Also knowing where your units are and who is actually closer to respond not just relying on the CAD to assign.

I see FOUR helmets of the roof of the Exposure D building. Anyone care to guess where they came from? The men decided to minimize the risk of them falling off into the alleyway when they were evacuating. All members were wearing bunker coats & pants, boots and gloves.

    3. I've NEVER worn a SCBA to a roof and can't imaging why on earth anyone would. If conditions are that bad that you need to be under air, then perhaps you don't belong on that roof in the first place. IMHO, and in the opinion of most of the men I work with, all the SCBA is is another 40lbs of unnecessary weight to lug up to the roof with you.

    I guess you dont have a mandatory mask policy in place for your firefighters, certain days smoke doesnt lift or wind may cause it to hang low, so what we dont go to the roof on those days. The SCBA is a life line in case of emergency, maybe if they had Masks those members could have remained in a safe area of the roof not inhaling the toxic by products of the fire. Even in my dept. we have chinstraps to keep helmets on head, yes i believe in traditions but safety is now more a priority than ever. No Hoods yet in Boston how come, they do offer protection for use under the type of fire conditions you encountered. It took FDNY 2 deaths and serious injuries to re-issue Harness' why are Boston Firefighters not equiped with them. I know you have a great dept. but I hope you dont learn the hard way about safety. I understand the lack of manpower however having a qualified chauffeur on turntable is safer than what almost occurred.


  3. No SCBA, No Proper PPE donned, no secondary means of egress, recipe ripe for disaster. Isolated building fortunately wind was working in there favor. Many serious issues here to look at, Boston should use this as a training tool. Wow is it me or did that aerial seem not to be operated smoothly with members on it, slammed into the exposure couple of times and was raised and lowered abruptly.

The address is at the intersection of Fordham Rd and Jerome Ave. Jerome Ave is dividing line in the Bronx for East and West. 2 W Fordham is first building on south side of Fordham at Jerome. 75,48,79, 43 engines assigned. Hope this helps. This is a 75 Engine first due box always has been, Ladder 33 must have been on another assignment or something.


  5. This topic of FDNY Helicopter is not a new issue, just being revisited. Since the mid 1980's the FDNY had a plan to drop firefighters onto the roof of a high rise fire to perform searches rescues and so on. However they use NYPD helicopters to drop the firefighters onto the roofs after NYPD has secured roof area. Also as stated the NYPD Helicopters may not be available when needed. If you are familiar with FDNY books the procedures are outlined in an AUC. I did the drill way back in 1985 and the actual plan has never been put to use at an actual incident over 20 years later. Many large areas of brush in Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn and The Bronx that a helicopter could be useful in a brush fire.


  6. Satelite Units have large diameter hose, no pumps, a large rig mounted stang nozzle. They carry a manifold for use at large scale operations and have hi-ex foam generators and they also carry extra foam cans of different types on rig, 5-gallon cans. They respond with there associated pumper which is a 2000 gpm engine company. They respond on 2nd alarm assignments or in certain areasa on the all hands due to potential water problems. There are 6 units in total.

    The foam units are converted pumpers that carry 1000 gallons of a certain type foam. they also repsond with a pumper. There is a foam unit that is a dedicated special apparatus that has tanks of foam i believe 2 types stored in brooklyn.


  7. Izzy4Eng, FDNY had a few split cab seagrave pumpers, they had a shorter wheelbase and are now mostly used as spares. Engs 42, 45 in the Bronx had them not sure of total delivered. I believe they were 1993 year models. The only other split cabs were the single front jack towers, they were 1994 1995 models which are all spares as of now with recent deliveries of new towers. Single jacks were an experiment that failed, FDNY is back to the standard tower with 2 front jacks. Hope this helped


  8. Tired of all this crap about the need to have minorities in FDNY, we are not a closed union shop, the City announces tests in advance and now does heavy recruiting. The FDNY does not even administer this test it is done by DCAS a city agency . The list is made by them and turned over to FDNY to hire from. There may be some imput on questions and such but FDNY does not pick and choose who takes the test. As far as standards being lowered now this is also crap. When I took test all you needed for appointment was a high school diploma, nothing else. Over time requirements were changed for college but there are many of us left who only need high school at the time. The college issue is another post to be discussed if needed. It is a shame for the people of NYC that the federal govt or any agency would lower standards to have a sub par FDNY to perform all that it does in NYC. We do not discriminate or do any less for race,creed or color we just do our job.


  9. New apparatus come with a version of the Q siren, not the big one shown on Ladder 58. Many companies have purchased or gotten the Q siren and mounted it on their rigs like Ladder 58. The shops due frown on this esp. with warranty issues, however most units take them off if rig goes out for repairs to safe guard siren.New Seagrave Rearmounts delivered this year have an electronic version of the Q.
