  1. Please note the buy-in was reduced and two "re-buys" were added.
  2. It is the vehicle and its operation that results in the registration type not the entity registering it. Utility service vehicles (bucket trucks, cranes, etc.) will require a commercial registration. Passneger vans and cars will receive a passenger registration. It doesn't matter that it is Con Ed who owns it or Ed Con (an individual). Conversely every now and then you'll see passenger cars and SUV's with commercial plates. To do that legally, minor modifications have to be made to the vehicle.
  3. Looks like bnechis's first two wheeler!
  4. There's a difference between protesting outside the White House and threatening the President. Nobody is protected by the Constitution when they make threats against a person (or the President). It is ironic and their venom is disturbing to say the least but we have to endure that just like we have to endure the neo-nazis, skinheads, and other extremist groups who enjoy the same freedoms that we do. As for abuses of the IRS code by claiming religious exemptions, they're not the only ones who do it. There're lots of other stories about the same thing in other groups but a dim view is taken on investigating and prosecuting "religious" groups, even the offensive ones. Gotta take the bad with the good. That's part of what makes this country so interesting!
  5. Hmmm... That may be fun. It'd be fun to try something new!
  6. They've talked about that for years but I think they were dismissed because they're not esthetically pleasing. At least that was the popular rumor at the time. I'm pretty sure they were on Long Island parkways for a while years back.
  7. Ambulances are not in the restricted vehicle category. They also have ambulance plates, not commercial, and the fly-cars now have regular passenger plates so no foul there either. The "commercial" ambulance designation is more of an industry term than a DMV term. There's no distinction between commercial ambulance, volunteer ambulance, etc. as far as the vehicle goes. From the NYS CRR Section 182.31
  8. During Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, and Tropical Storm Lee, the DOT authorized the use of the parkways by utilities due to the nature of the emergency and to expedite their transit to affected areas.
  9. The FD Commissioner is appointed by the mayor and can't be an outspoken critic, at least not for very long. The FD administration may be working behind the scenes at City Hall to remedy this with the Mayor's Office but they won't publicize much of that. The union on the other hand has no such restrictions and is able to lobby the media and the court of public opinion to help move the issue. This is not unique to Yonkers; this happens in many agencies with politically appointed agency heads and unions.
  10. While members frequently suggest that contributions should be limited to those with the proverbial horse in the race, there is no such requirement to do so and EMTBravo encourages all members to contribute positively to the discussion. Note the emphasis on contribute and positively. It's OK to disagree but mudslinging and bashing should be relegated to other venues. There are plenty of knowledgeable people with a wealth of information that cross jurisdictional and disciplinary "boundaries". Don't be dissuaded by emotional tirades or venting by other members. Carry on!
  11. Tractor trailers are definitely not authorized. DOT has issued a lot of permits to bus companies (school and Liberty Lines) so they're on the parkways more than ever. Small trucks (pick-ups/vans/etc.) with commercial plates are still prohibited but as they cut police patrols on the roads they take advantage and roll the dice that they'll get away with it.
  12. If I recall correctly, EMD is done for all Yonkers 911 calls by Empress.
  13. Why on earth should the FD send an engine company to a twisted ankle call or other BLS calls that don't warrant such a response. I have the same issue with sending ALS units on BLS calls. The union has to run straight to court because the city is not bargaining in good faith, they're making sweeping cuts under the pretense of reform and giving the union no other alternative. What should they do when the city makes draconican cuts?
  14. I believe that FEMA would classify them as first responders since the definition was expanded in the early 2000's. They could probably use the same training as any other responder - observe, report, run away.
  15. To be fair, does anyone know if/how many pet projects were included in the Katrina spending bills? If the NY delegation did the same thing then, we can't really complain about it.
  16. How many pedestrians are run over by city buses in a year? Probably about the same number. Where's the outcry about that? We have to stop trying to legislate responsibility!
  17. Sad but true!
  18. It's in regard to posts that had to be deleted because they inaccurately reported agencies had dive teams or other resources but do not. The people that need to get the message, got the message (I hope). When someone posts something inaccurate about an agency or their resources, we very quickly receive notification from personnel in authority reporting the problem and we remove the offending posts.
  19. How great an investment will it be? What's the actual cost? How will that cost be borne by the MTA, perhaps a fare hike? I'm with bnechis, I don't see the cost/benefit argument and your cleanliness point is moot as all that garbage will simply be on the platforms now since the slobs and pigs who litter won't stop just because of partitions. And having intimate knowledge of the civil service system, I respectfully disagree with your assertion that there will not be issues associated with the implementation of this from the human factors (operators). I'm not saying it isn't a great idea. I think a lot of things have been great ideas that simply aren't worth the expense or the trouble.
  20. Besides the cost are the logistics. As good as they may be, it will take quite a bit to get each door lined up properly with a manually operated train. The motorman will have to ease into the stations even more slowly and when he/she is off and the doors don't line up 100%, it will further slow boarding down.
  21. Here's a thought for a good New Year's resolution... Don't post something unless you know it to be accurate and you have the authority to do so. Speculating on what department has or does not have a dive team is NOT what this thread is for. If you don't know for certain, don't post! Carry on. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
  22. http://crimevoice.com/suspect-arrested-in-home-invasion-shooting-20538/ http://www.news10.net/news/article/222195/2/1-dead-in-Sacramento-home-invasion http://www.examiner.com/article/armed-homeowner-shoots-intruders-while-children-have-sleepover Despite being wounded himself, the homeowner maintained his composure and control of his weapon wounding all three of the suspects, one fatally. I don't know why they targeted this house full of kids at the time but I'm glad the homeowner was able to defend them.
  23. Reminder: Chimney Fires should NOT be submitted as Incident Alerts per our long standing policy on the subject. Review the guidelines and contact a staff member if you have any questions. Thanks!
  24. As stated above, do NOT repost NWS updates in this thread or the shoutbox. It is counterproductive as that information can be accessed readily by other means. This thread is for OUR discussion!
