  2. this is correct the front or rear can be turned on or off indipendently. Also what ever happened to Slow down and move left for stoped emergancy vehicles on the road?
  3. When I took the test in 06 it was given at local high schools. I took it at Poughkeepsie high and I know that it was also offered at Kingston high school. once you send in the application they send you a admision form with the date, time and place of the exam. I know that it was offered more than once on the day that I took the test. It took about 1 year from the time I took the test to complet the background, psych, and start the academy. I will have 6 months on the job the first of February. If you have any questions feel free to email me.
  4. Arlington was also at this fire with equipment from Craft Corners. There is a thank you leter from President Reagan in the croft corners fire station from this fire. Hyde parks ladder was stuck in ice at Staatsburgs fire at Anderson School and had to be left there for a couple days until it thawed enough to get it out from what I have been told by the senior members of Staatsburg. Staatsburg responded to the scene after they finished at anderson school also if I understood them corectly.
  5. I read almost the entire book in the Poughkeepsie Barnes and Nobles while I waited to get the new Harry Potter book for my wife last friday night. It has some great history about the state police and Troop K Comanders from the early years of the state police. I plan to pick up a copy of the book next time I go to Barnes and Nobles.
  6. there is alot more then is in this article that is going on I am sure. I only have one problem with the way things are being dane in Beekman curently. If Greenhaven wants an ambulance they can call 911 like the rest of the people in Beekman. this way the Beekman fire dept. knows that 34-79 is out at greenhaven and then they can try to get 71 out if posible. Also if Alamo has a unit avalible in the city of Poughkeepsie and they know that the inmate is going to go to a hospital in Poughkeepsie then as a dispatcher myself it makes more sence to send the Poughkeepsie unit for non emergency calls so the crew is in service and where they belong sooner afterthe call is completed
  7. Actuly and unfortunatly this is NOT the case. My Dept just removed our ambulance from service and replaced it with an "Emergancy Responce Vehicle" (name given by state of NY DOH). They gave us a ton of paperwork and after it was completed and returned we called to see when we could get our inspectionand were told that the State DOH does NOT inspect BLS "emergency responce vehicles. This is sad since anyone can fill out the paperwork (takes agout 20 hours) and register thiere vehicle as long as they have some one sign off that they are willing to transport PT's for you. The only Flycars that NY state recognises are from comercial EMS companies and these are inspected the rest are clasified as emergency responce vehicles. This puts way to many people in danger and needs to change since I can see people in some areas with to much time and money on their hands registering POVs.

  9. This is not a new topic and it does not only effect municipal employees. There are several large companies that either ban tabaco use by employees or charge more then twice the insurance rate for smokers and smokers get differtent medical coverage then non smokers. I see this being a growing trend in insurance and several cariers had anounced that they will no longer cover smokers starting in a couple years.

  11. Yes its a Pierce Impel Pierce Impel I believe that some one told me that Illinois is starting to get away from green lights except on command post and IC vehicles since they got into NIMS training????
  12. Like I said in my first post put the added cost into the cost of the class. How much do you think it costs NY state to print a photo ID when they have your photo on file at the DMV even if it is an extra $25.00 then big deal. Most of you are forgeting that you show up in a big ambulance but there are many more people that show up in personal cars that are members of departments that do not issue a department ID. Then again I also beleve that every volunteer firefighter or EMT in NY should have a STATE photo ID for the Department just in case we ever have a masive activation of emergancy services for a national disaster or worse. Its time that the NY state office of emergancy managment ponies up some of their funds for a good cause and get orginised in case there is an actual time when people fromj around the state are converging on a area as happened with the flooding last year upstate and several other times. It might be a benifit since it could be tied into a database with the state that could be updated anualy by each deptartment and show levels of training or at least specialised rescue training. I will simply say that there are plenty of grants out there to be gotten if the state tried to get funding for a project such as this not only would they probaby get the funding they could and up as a modle for other states to follow.
  13. thuugh I don't know if I want the state to issue badges to EMT's I feel that the state is long overdue to revamp the EMT cards that they do issue. They already have the majority of photos on file from DL's so how hard would it be for the state to issue a photo ID forthe EMT card. I HAVE had my identity questioned on calls and it is only going to continue to get more common with people unfimiliar with volunteer based services moving to areas covered by volunteers that have to respond in personal cars to provide service untill the comercial EMS gets on scene. This is the system that NYS implimented with NYS security licenses and even if the cost of classs went up to caover this how many people here realy paid for class out of their own pockets vs the number that were sponcered by an agency.
  14. I have to agree with this statment as well for Dutchess County. Helo's and ALS ground are over used if not abused in Dutchess County on a daily bacis. I sit and wait forthe Helo request every time that East Fishkill gets a MVA. While yes they do have a long transport time to the hospital we all need to sit back and remember that Medivac while great when used properly and for the right reasons is still dangerous and the more it gets abused more greater the risk for an accident or crash. I am not saying not to use choppers but there also need to be a risk to benifit thought before saying send the chopper. Also on those flight times I understand that yes the bird can be in the air and over the scene but also you have to take into concideration getting the LZ set up. If you go 3 dispatches thats already 10 minutes and this can and does happen with the dwindeling ranks of volunteers today.
  15. while we are talking about pet peves today why do so many areas feel that it is neededto transport an ALS PT in a vollie bus with the Medic onboard. I understand if it as an intercept on the way to the hospital but there are several areas in Dutchess that you hear XYZ Fire enrout ALS medic on board. I have several problems with this. 1. why wait for the medic on the scene if you are going to transport then get moving delay in PT transport for a medic is still a delay in transport 2. If you are waiting on the scene or the medic gets on the scene before you get the PT packaged why take 2 units out of service for 1 PT. not a good idea since the ALS unit is the unit that was probably going to cover your district while the BLS unit was out. this is also a issue with resources with the trend in fuel cost why are we waisting fuel since fuel is one of the number one issues that fire commisioners complain about since it one of the easiest to control
  16. OK sorry for lack of details. XYZ Volunteer BLS ambulance & comercial EMS ALS are simultanious dispatched to a call. BLS gets on scene and ALS has 10 - 15 min eta. most areas could be at or almost to the hospital in this time frame. In Dutchess the majority of calls are now simultanious dispatched since there is a lack of volunteers especialy during the day. I do understand that yes there is pride and the volunteers want to be in the back of the bus but now what hapens when the same dept gets a call for a minor BLS call and now a 2nd comercial usualy ALS unit is sent to cover the second call since the BLS bus from that dept. transported an ALS PT and took 2 units out of service. most volunteer depts in dutchess county have the BLS bus as part of a FD rather then a seperate agency and usualy only have 1bus to a district and more and more districts are doing away with the bus altogeather and going to first responce vehicles (BLS flycars).
  17. Now how much pride are you going to have left when the second call in the district drops and you go 4 dispatces and 20 minutes before the 2nd bus gets out for the priority 4 BLS call in the district and the PT waits 30 minutes for a bus
  18. I have several issues with this as well. There have been several times when I have intercepted with a BLS crew in CT going to sharon hospital and they are driving lights and no siren all the way to the hospital for a PT that was not in a critical PT. I also was driving an ALS bus with a cardiac PT on the TSP and was pulled over by the NYSP and the trooper said "I don't know if you are alowed on the TSP with an ambulance." I informed him that I had a PT in the back abd was going to Albany for surgery and he replied "why arn't your lights on then?" being it was not a critical PT I explained to the trooper that it is against our SOP's. I have heard of places that have lights that signify if there is a PT in the bus similare to the cruise lights in the lightbars in CT they are dim steady bulbs but that would just be something else to confuse the drivers out there
  19. From the fact that you can see flames coming out the gable vent and you can see through the side of the structure it to what looks to be an active attic fire I would say NO. If you look at the pic again you see that the ff standing is holding a saw so it looks as if they are prpairing to cut an inspection or vent hole in the roof. also I would need to know what hose team were in operation in what locations of the house if they were pushing the fire out the end of the house by an interior attack
  20. want to bet. lets call some lawyers and see what they say. I did when there was a vidiotape of a family member in a hospital that was viewed by outside doctors not involved in care for the PT with out consent of the PT or his health care proxy. The vidio was being done for a drug research study and we were never consulted prior to or after taping and only found out about it after it was used. Lets just say that there was never a bill sent for care from the hospital and it was almost 3 months in ICU and 6 months total in the hospital with multiple surgeries. If you film a PT and it is viewed for any reason with out WRITEN CONCENT from the PT alowing for the vidio in the first place and also for the viewing then you better know a great lawyer since there is an abundance of lawyers waiting to go after the healthcare industry EMS included.
  21. And this is why I feel that they should be striped of certification they violated HIPPA as well as several NYS penal laws. And article 800 does take violations of HIPPA and NYS law as reasons for revocation of certification. I hate to say it but string up a few idiots for the public to see that the will be severly punished and it might actuly make the EMS system look beter not worse.
  22. town of Pok PD has one I saw today at the station and I was told they have a couple portables that go from unit to unit. NYSP has several and they are getting more soon since they are making $$$ for the state hand over fist. I just dont understand why you would place t hem on a slick top car. if you are going to have that on top of the car you should put lights up there as well. I read somewere the FedSIg was trying to install 2 of the cameras in a vision / vector bar so that they were hiden and simply looked like a regular light bar.
  23. Frist off let me say that I am glad that the two people in question resigned, and if you ask me they should be striped of their certification by NYSDOH. But who is worse the crew for making the tape or the person that leaked it to the press. I don't have a problem with turning it over to FDNY managment but some one had to leak this to the Post. so who is the worst person in your eyes the crew or the person that called the press to start a new round of speculation and scrutiny for all the hard working and dedicated EMS workers that are underapreciated by every one that they serve.
  24. The FD should have striped the lettering off before turning it over but I want to know why there are still red lenses in the lightbar???
