This is true. There is a carpenter, a NYC teacher, an NYPD, and two FDNY. These guys are a true blue blooded hardworking band. If you get a chance, see them. I've seen them close to 20 times and each show is better than the last. They always remember where they came from. Not to mention they are hilarious. A bunch of us will be at the Molly Spillaines show on Friday in Mamaroneck.

  3. What is the legality of a government entity doing something that has been voted down by the taxpayers? Can a government entity "horde" funds to do a project without taxpayer approval? I thought every government entity had to have a zero budget balance at the end of their fiscal year (notwithstanding contingency funds).

    Seth,

It all matters on whether or not Yorktown is a 'Fire District' or 'Fire Protection District'. In a Fire District the fire department is a government entity and be accountable for all their funds to the people of said district. In a Fire Protection District the fire department is technically a private corporation that is contracted by the government to provide fire protection and is provided funds by the government but those funds become the property of the corporation and as long as fire and rescue services are completed there isn't much that can be done besides canceling the contract and finding another whole entity to provide those services.

But in my opinion, I believe it is highly irresponsible for the fire department to disregard the obvious will of the people and build the new firehouse, no matter which funds they now use.

  4. In Mahopac Falls during such storms we take responsibilites for the dry hydrants in our distric and clear those... For the small area of Secor which has pressurized hydrants this is left more to the homeowner... though nobody here does it... I have one across the street and its never clear and most of the time blocked by the 21 y.o. daughter who parks her car there... idiots

  5. As for asking the question of career Firefighters taking the job if there wee no pension, who in this day & age would take a job that offers no pension?

That would actually be the 911 Dispatchers in New York State who continue to be snubbed by the political leaders in Albany year after year.

As for the question on whether to volunteer without blue lights: Of course I would still. I joined to help people and be part of something bigger than myself and be part of the American dream which was born on the back of volunteers. But I must take slight insult from the original poster of this forum. It almost suggests that to be a volunteer you must be a buff to want to help others. If anybody should be reprimanded on this forum (cause I know one person has that had commented on this forum) it should be the original poster for asking and subtlely suggesting that volunteers are only worth as much they are given to do their job, when in reality it's the volunteers who will do this for up to 20 years without any compensation at all except for those few parties and fewer saves that we will get in our life times.

  6. Arrangements are as follows:

Wake will be held at Joe Smith Funeral Home on Route 6 in Mahopac.

    Tuesday 7-9

    Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9

Firematic procession on Wednesday at 730 in Full Dress Uniform.

Funeral will be held at St John the Evangelist Church on East Lake Blvd in Mahopac.

    Thursday at 9:45 a.m.

I would like to express thanks on behalf of myself and the rest of the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department to those who have expressed their sorrow and offers of help. Thank you.

  7. It is with deep regret the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department announces the Line Of Duty Death of Firefighter Robert Johnson. Firefighter Johnson was involved in a fall off a fire engine last fall while performing fire prevention techniques for a school in our district. He had been in a coma since. He was also a retired United States Marine. Arrangements will be posted as soon as I hear them.

  8. Do me a huge favor and remove the part of the IA that says that Mahopac Falls (my dept) couldn't assemble a crew for an engine.... that is horridly incorrect, i was there at the fire with the rescue.. we never got hit out for the additional engine cause if we did it would have been put on the road.. putnam only toned out mahopac for it

And i quote from the dispatcher at Putnam 911 the night of the fire:

"just mahopac- 60 control was like you guys already have the rescue and ambulance out do you wanna try for an engine and strip urself or go mahopac and i was like prob be better with mahopac"

  9. That is correct. In Putnam County we use the ProQA EMD system which after asking certain questions it provides a response level:

Alpha- being the least level in which only a BLS ambulance is sent(although it is dispatcher discretion to to upgrade to send a medic.

    Bravo- BLS & ALS

    Charlie- BLS & ALS

    Delta- BLS & ALS

Echo- BLS & ALS which is usually Cardiac Arrest or current Choking
