  2. 16 Sunset Rd

    Date: 11/3

    Time: 2234 hours

    Location: 16 Sunset Rd

    Frequency:

Units Operating: Darien Unit 400, Engine 42, Engine 41, Tanker 45, Rescue 44, Noroton Heights Truck 20, Noroton Ladder 30, Post 53, FMO

Description Of Incident: 2234 hrs Darien FD dispatched to 16 Sunset Rd for report of a working fire. First PD and EMS units on scene reporting a "fully engulfed house." Unit 400 was the first fire unit on scene and reported heavy fire from the rear of the house. First in units knocked down fire in about 30 mins. Noroton Ladder 30 served as the RIT. FMO on scene investigating until 0300 hours. One dog perished in the fire after CPR attempts were unsuccesful.

  3. Volunteerism is continuing to decrease, especially in the fire service. What can you do to mitigate situations where members are being "pushed" to hold an office, because they are the most suited for the job, even if they aren't qualified?

Do you begin to just eliminate some offices? I.E. just get rid of a Lieutenant's office.

Although time, knowledge, training, and experience are imperative for officer's to have, smaller volunteer departments continue to have problem filling officer's role with adequately qualified personnel. These situations usually put the new, 2-3 year firefighter in an officer's role because he is around and willing to help wherever he can.

  4. The only ones that I can think of that still operate with open cabs are:

Noroton FD operates a 1972 Maxim as a 2nd due engine

Chesire FD - operates a 1970? Maxim Snorkel as Truck 1 (not sure if this is still in service)

Onset FD in Mass I think operates 2 Maxims - a midmount aerial and an engine

  5. Does anyone's departments still operate or know of a department that is still operating with an open cab apparatus? I can only think of one or two departments that still do. I don't think there are any "true" open cabs left, with no doors or anything, but I was referring to trucks without a roof.

  6. My favorite is easy, Hahn. It seemed like the harder we beat on it, the better it preformed. My least favorite, Sutphen tower ladders.....the bucket is useless for anything other than a water tower, and the ground ladders can be a pain to get on and off. The specs have a lot to do with it though. a well planned and laid out apparatus will succeed where a rig not thought out will fail even when made by the same manufacturer

Did anyone else notice the Sutphen Tower Ladder as his profile picture? LOL

  7. Hello,

I heard that West Haven is going to be hiring? I am moving to the area and was curious if anyone had any info or works there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here is the information on the application for West Shore FD

Applications are out for Firefighter/ EMT-P or FF/EMT-B.

Details are on the website http://www.westshorefd.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=107&Itemid=66

Applications will be available at station or online download.

  8. Has anyone heard or have any information on 12 inch supply hose? I've heard that somewhere down in New Jersey near Jersey City they have it, but have been unable to find any more information. Supposedly there are a couple hose wagons that have this hose in neighboring towns as well.

  9. lad12derff,

First off I am describing what had happened and the quarterbacking was on the other site, not on here and definatley not accusing you of it, nor anyone else here.

Second, yes the driver made an error, that is not being questioned. He knows he made an error and he admits he did, he's not saying he didn't or making any excuses.

Third, this is an obvious learning tool / reminder about apparaus placement and it should be never overlooked. The brown stuff hits the osculating / rotating metal blades a lot of the time but you should always look and not make any assumptions.

Now we all know that all fire apparatus vehicles especially aerials need to be on stable ground and should never leave the road. Aerial devices should not be set up on soft ground or on driveways / parking lots that are not road rated. That is a given when anyone takes andy aerial operations training. This was an obvious oversite and the driver is very lucky that the truck did not fully tip over and someone got hurt. There are more pictures that are not posted on FFCloseCalls.com of this incident and how the tower ladder was set up. This is a case of simple complaintency that could have gone very wrong and could have ended with different results.

In a situation where you have a private dwelling fire with a driveway 500 feet long, are you guys keeping your ladder on the road?

  11. Our trucks only carry two portable radios on it, generally one for the driver and one for the crew. Every officer has their own portable, so wishfully thinking the officer, the crew, and the driver will each have a radio. If an officer doesn't show up, and a senior guy is riding shotgun, then the crew is without a radio, which can be a problem. I would like to see another radio put on each truck, because each crew I think should have a portable.

  12. Try third life! NHFD has been an all Mack department for quite some time. Noroton Heights has had their truck refurbished quite a lot. They had a Mack CF / Snorkel which I beleive was refurbed into the unit you are showing on your link. Another one of thier CF pumpers was converted into their current quint. They purcahsed an FDNY Mack CF chassis and had Marion rebuilt it into a rescue pumper.

I think the snorkel was refurbed and is currently NHFD's tanker that they have in service right now, Tanker 22. The one on the link that was sent to New Hampshire I think is and always was used as a tanker, Tanker 23 when it was theirs.
