  1. Up until your first post, it was a condolence thread.

Ted Kennedy for better or worse is quite a controversial public figure...I can imagine there are quite a few posters on this board who offer no condolences to this man or his family. I am usually against locking threads but I can see this getting out of hand.

  2. Such a tragedy.

Any early indicators as to why the van was in the northbound lanes? I mean, usually that kind of thing is from a drunk driver, but this doesn't really sound like that kind of scenario. More importantly, what can be done to assure that something like this doesn't occur again?

God be with them all; involved, family, responders, and the communities at large.

The entrance to go north on the TSP from 117 and the exit ramp are located right next to each other at the same stoplight. I could see how someone who is uncomfortable driving and not familiar with the area could make this mistake of going south in the northbound lane. The article stated the driver of the southbound minivan was from Long Island so this could easily be the case. I cant figure out how to add the Google Maps link to this post but if you type in "883 Bedford Road Pleasantville NY" you can see both the aerial and street view of what I am talking about.

  3. If it was me I would going to the academy and forget you ever worked for any other company or ever did it with the vollies. Act like it is your first day on earth and let them show you everything.

    Just what I would do.

Listen to CPAGE...you dont know sh*t. I went through it back in 05 and since have become a FF. Academically speaking at least for me the TOPS program was harder than Proby School. Good luck my friend and study hard for those scenarios!

  4. Your post is actually a great argument FOR this bill, thanks!

It's the peoples money! A dollar a day per taxpayer? I'm not sure where you get that or if it's accurate, but I would interpret that to mean a family of 5 on Long Island pays $1.825 annually in fire taxes. Not including if they decide to donate when you send around letters asking for donations or set up outside the supermarket. Then, factor in higher fire insurance rates for a volunteer department.

And for that they get what Newsday accurately reported on and what many of us have known for years...a bunch of guys hanging out in palatial firehouses, sometimes almost right across the street from each other, housing hugely expensive top of the line apparatus with every bell and whistle known to man, and probably 3 or 4 times as many of them on the Island as actually needed. Then, add in the Carribean trips for scuba diving training, party (oh, sorry, training buses), etc., etc.

No accountability, no standardized training, etc.

Oh man I could go on and on...IMO the Long Island Fire Service is the poster child for why this bill is necessary, but why waste my time basically repeating what has already clearly shown to be true by Newsday?

But don't worry, if you love your community so much and they love and appreciate you, nothing will change with the passage of this bill. All the bill does is give voters the opportunity to vote on a change.

I know some of you personally and the guys I know are all great guys. I'm sure most of the rest of you are too, so I must close with... qtip... and state for the record that this will (ok, probably) be my last post on the Long Island volunteer fire service.

Hey JFlynn you forgot about racing! Cause you know we do this all the time at fires, you know jump from a hot rod at 50 mph with only a hockey helmet and kneepads while simultaneously throwing a ladder and climbing it!

  5. This might be a hot button topic but I wanted to voice my thoughts and disbelief.

I received an email yesterday (quoted below) from a 3rd party that copied a FASNY email in opposition to the proposed legislation requested by the Attorney General.

Can someone please for the life of me. Explain why FASNY would be opposed to this? Is the Volunteer Fire Service only there to save localities money? And what makes them overall so sure that having all these fragmented fire districts in some areas actually saves tax payer dollars with the stacking of apparatus in these districts? Not to mention the consolidation of personnel which might actually make for better service. Why is it...that as an organization they preach about the volunteer fire service...when combination systems...both large and medium sized have worked for years down south and out west. Or when professional firefighter organizations make valid arguments on how paid systems can also save money and what is suppose to be the priority of what we do...enhance service...we are the bastards of the world.

Get an open mind...think about the root issues and how much sense it actually makes. I know of some areas where there are more fire commissioners in a 10 square mile area then they get people on the road for a call. With stations and apparatus a stones throw away...but having the ability to consolidate makes no sense.

I think its because the chiefs and commisioners dont want to give up their fifedoms and $60K tahoes. I have three firehouses from 3 different vfd's within walking distance of my home. Each of these dept.'s does 300-400 runs a year.

  6. .

    ..

I AM A BRONX UPS DRIVER ooops capslock sorry

    .

    .

.anyway i see 2-3 of these guys almost daily in their pov's decked out with l.e.d.'s fasny or volly licence plates and some chevron striping actually on the rear of the vehicles i am friendly with 1 of these guys ,

what is their actual role other than scene support , i meen they have next to no training if any at all

From what I understand they are a buff group comprising of former members from the now defunct(inactive?) Aviation Volunteer Fire Dept. in the Bronx. I dont know much about them but what little I hear is not good, maybe some Bronx FDNY brothers could fill us in. Please refrain from thinking these clowns have anything to do with FDNY or the New York Fire Patrol.

  7. No wonder my last 24 was unusually busy, with alot of full assignments on BS boxes. Guys were wondering what was going on. Hey JBE is there anything different in the way the text on the tickets are worded. It seems alot of guys were having difficulties reading the tickets, I even overheard someone ask what a UCT was? I think it would have been nice for the city to let the guys in the field know about his. I never heard anything about this program until now.

  8. I am not so worried about it being a japanese make as it is being a "hybrid". It seems like another part of the liberal agenda to emasculate the police specifically the NYPD. Dont get me wrong I am somewhat a supporter of the green movement and I think civilians should purchase alternative fuel vehicles if it suits there needs, but I feel law enforcement should be outfitted in more intimidating big block vehicles like crown vics, chargers and SUV's. They are the NYPD not the hug police...a 4 cylinder hybrid rolling up just doesnt have the same deterrent effect on the mopes hanging out on the corner as an 8 cylinder Charger. The 4'8" female and the guy with dreadlocks who can barely speak English getting out of the RMP are also part of the problem, but thats a discussion for another day.

  9. FDR park is beautiful on a weekday, but on summer weekends it becomes an extension of the South Bronx. Croton Point also gets crowded on weekends. Ridge Park in Greenburgh might be a good spot, my Dad had a lot of company picnics there growing up, was always a good time.

  10. Andy, that song is permanently stuck in my head. Whenever my father and I were working in the garage or around the house, he used to have PLJ on, and I swear this song and the B-52's "Roam" were on a loop. He stopped listening to it and went to WHUD, I bounce between KRock, Q104 and yes, Z100.

As far as I am concerned, K-Rock isn't playing enough new or upcoming band material. I'll stick to surfing the net for the newest and sometimes better stuff, and put it on my Ipod.

Why don't we hear more Dropkick Murphys?!

While I love DKM, been a fan since 1999 and been in the pit at many shows, I dont think you are gonna hear their music on any mainstream radio station anytime soon. While they have managed to get their music into two major movies(Fever Pitch/Departed) for the average person out there they are just a gimmicky St Paddys Day bar band. I for one think they have gone way overboad on their last few albums with the bagpipes and tin whistles. They were alot better back in the "Do or Die" and The Gangs All Here" when they had that unpolished Hardcore sound. The few celtic influenced tracks just gave those albums a refreshing feel from everything else out there. Now they just over do it with the wannabe Irish folk band stuff.
