  1. I'm backkkkkk.........

For those that don't know me, name's Mike. Currently 18 years old and just completed my first year at a small, private college in a small town adjacent to Worcester Mass. for a degree in fire science. Just finished up an EMT course 2 weeks ago as part of my 2nd semester classes at school, and I'll be testing with Mass. Office of EMS in early June to get my patch. (Well, the patch will come later, early June's just the practical, then comes the month and a half wait for results, and then finally the written/CAD test and then I get to see the results.)

I was, up until January of this year, a fire explorer with a small combination department for a grand total of 4 years until the advisor stepped down due to scheduling issues and the post has been all but killed off since then. Attempted to get hired by that department and another local one as a call firefighter, but thanks to budget cuts, hiring freezes are in effect. So I'm technically a nothing, but I am always striving to constantly learn, and that's what drew me back here. Hope to stay for awhile.

  2. Sage, I believe that the first due firehouse to Fenway is the E-37 L-26 house located on Huntington ave. (A.K.A. "The Huntington ave. Express") Not the E-33 L-15 house like you said in your first post.

It is in fact, E-37 and L-26 first due to Fenway.

  3. It's just that - a number on a rating system. It's great for the people who live and work there - it potentially saves them money. This site is primarily visited by buffs, firefighters and "learn-ed" emergency professionals. Always remember that Charleston, SC is a Class 1. That number tells you nothing about how a department operates.

    $.02

Correction, WAS a class 1 dept. Now they're Class 3.

  4. In Richland County (SC) we have two bike medics. They do alot of the special events (go to schools for show and tell, concerts ect.), they also first respond when not on special events. At times the bottom of the county falls apart and they will first respond and it is a good thing. Especially if it's an rma. The bikes are Harley Davidson with side "bags" for their stuff. They have been doing this for about 6 yrs.

Which are the only real bikes. :P

  5. Hmmmm Colony!!! The make a good pie! I have been to a lot of places in NYC that make a good pie too. Nothing better on a cold day than a slice of cheese and a warm pretzel.

Future, I feel bad for you since Mass' idea of pizza is carboard with Prego sause and cheddar cheese!!! :P

Louis' Lunch (pronounced Lew-ie's) is the original make of the hamburger by far and thye have the gas broilers to prove it, three of them built in 1896 (I beleive if I remember correctly). Served on white toast with either a slice of tomato, cheese spread and a slice of onion, or any single or combination. AND DON'T ASK FOR KETCHUP!!!! Besides going there is all part of the ambiance.

Any one who knows of New Haven pizza has to know of Frank Pepe's Pizza on Wooster Street, just down from Sally's. Mr. Pepe was the originator of the white clam pizza and why did he make it??? Because he was allergic to tomatos and cheese!!!

Anyone who wants to come up and sample our fare, let me know, I'll show yuo all around.

Joe, I would be inclined to agree with you with some pizza joints. Some places are actually quite good around here. Most pizza joints have medium thick crust with very oily sauce and shredded mozarella. Basically soft bread with pizza toppings.

HOWEVER, I believe the best pizza comes from Pizzeria Mangia in Lake George NY. Yes, I know it's not from NYC, but the pizza and employees there are great. I ordered a small cheese my last day in Lake George, cook messed up on it by ripping the dough taking it out of the oven, made another and only charged me for 1. He also shook my hand and thanked me for my patronage (I went there everyday I was there and I even tried somewhere else - they didn't even come close)

  6. It seems that the Aerialscope product has started losing its reputation since Seagrave took over. Problems are popping up all over the land with the Seagrave Scopes. There will be a day when kids coming on the job will seem the Scope as "just another tower" unless Seagrave fixes the issues soon. Thankfully we couldn't afford one when we bought our MM ALF/LTI!

Imagine being happy you have an ALF over a Scope! For us the service was way to far away to deal with frequent issues, so this makes sense. Our ALF service is within 2 hrs vs 4 hrs and two states away. We even had the City Council convinced that if the Scope bid was within $50K of the others it would be a better longterm truck! HA! I glad we're not trying to live that one down, I got to many years to go.

Too bad for the FDMV brothers they seem to be taking a beating all over and just when you think the City did something decen by buying a decent truck...

I believe that the Scope is a great Tower for operations, however, no matter how hard they try, there's going to be at least 1 lemon made by any apparatus manufacturer in any given year. Despite how hard they try, lemons are unavoidable. It probably doesn't help if the city that operates a lemon doesn't put the effort into it to get back in operable condition.

  7. Because in many large cities you will get a fire apparatus faster then a bus.

Also I do not agree that EMS should be 3rd party. I am a whole hearted supported of fire based EMS. Look at some of the best systems in the country and they are fire based. Better pay, better flexibility, often better equipment. Sure we can roll out the problem childs..but I don't play with that. Just as much as I can bring in 3rd party, private problems just the same. I surely would not want to do ems all day long and just that. I like to run..that is why I like being dual role. And please do not bring up one major metropolitan area that "merged" their 3rd party system into the FD. That is not fire based. That was a guise to rename the 3rd party.

The bottom line is..if you do it...do it right or don't do it at all!

Actually, a 3rd party system, IF SET UP RIGHT, can be just as good.

    Take Worcester MA for example:

Closest Fire Company and an available UMASS Paramedic Ambulance (rolls with 2 Paramedics). Medic Ambo signs on a third Ops channel that's used for single company calls (outside fires, medicals, etc) Fire Company can communicate DIRECTLY with the third party Ambulance, therefore updating the medics that are responding.

The 2 minor problems with this system:

Delayed communications between dispatch centers - Rarely does this ever happen, as there is a dedicated

    FD/PD/EMS Inter-Op channel.

Backup Ambulances (AMR, Medstar, and other privates) don't have Inter-Op capabilities. Other Fire Departments that sometimes provide mutual aid with ambulances occaisonally do have Inter-Op capability, but I've never heard of anyone using it.

  8. Anybody know if the BuddyLight will fit a Bullard USTM Traditional Style helmet? It can either come with or without the cairns eagle, but Bullard isn't Cairns. ;)

(Please note, I don't have a Bullard or a BuddyLight yet, but I am hoping for enough money [whether by a new job I may get or by Christmas gifts] to buy both)
