  1. Trash collector struck, killed in Carmel

CARMEL — A 24-year-old Danbury, Conn., man was killed yesterday morning after he fell from a garbage truck and was struck by an oncoming truck in a Route 52 shopping center.

Robert Forlastro, who worked for F&H Sanitation, lost his footing when he got out of the passenger side of the parked garbage truck and landed in the path of a utility truck at 8:56 a.m., Carmel police said.

The New York State Electric and Gas truck was driven by James Collins, 52, of Brewster. Witnesses said the driver was pulling slowly into a parking space when he struck Forlastro, who was pronounced dead at the accident scene, Lt. Brian Karst said.

Police said they were not considering criminal charges. No one else was injured.

"He was just one of those guys that everybody took to and liked," F&S spokesman Dave Dunleavy said yesterday of Forlastro. "Everyone loved him dearly. It has been an awful day for all of us."

Forlastro began working for the company in May. F&S, with its familiar dark green trucks, is a longtime trash collector in Carmel. Its permit to collect residential garbage in town was renewed in May and extends to May 31, 2006.

    The family was devastated.

"We can't believe this has happened," said Forlastro's sister, Tina Samuelson of Danbury.

She described her brother as an outgoing young man who loved NASCAR racing and watching local hockey games.

    Funeral plans were being made.

NYSEG spokeswoman Kathleen Abels said the company and the driver also were upset by the incident.

"We are deeply saddened by this morning's tragic accident, and we are cooperating fully with the police," she said.

Staff and customers from Carmel Bagel & Deli ... Licious, in the shopping center, came running out when they heard the commotion.

"When I saw all the trucks and emergency vehicles, I knew something bad had happened," said Patrick Slattery of Carmel, who pulled in just after the incident.

"They were pretty shaken up (in the deli). One guy was really ashen," Slattery said.

Botanica Florist was just opening for the day as Forlastro was struck near the store.

One employee pulled into the parking lot as police arrived and quickly called her boss, Marianne Mattock.

"She said, 'There is a body in the parking lot,' " the floral shop owner recalled. "I could tell from her voice there was something very wrong.

"I'm just trying to shake this off," Mattock said.

Mattock said the parking lot had become a problem since it was repaved a few months ago. A curb, which had separated her five parking places from those of the mall's four other stores — including a nail salon, deli and gift shop — was removed. By taking out the curb, she said, the lot has become a long drive-through, allowing drivers to stream in and out at a much faster speed than they could have before.

"It's terrible — what a thing," Lorraine Kenna said of the incident. Kenna owns the gift shop Dancing Moon. She arrived later in the morning to string holiday lights.

"I wonder if I should still be hanging these decorations," she said, holding globes of clear lights. "It doesn't feel right."

  5. in Port Chester we respond to auto alarms just the same as is the home owner called it in. Three engines, one ladder, and one rescue. if it is in rye brook, on of their rigs will respond as well. even if the alarm company or home/business owner calls back to report a false alarm, all units still respond without a 10-20 until the first engine or chief is on location to confirm. if it's at a school or at United Hospital then it's a full dept. response.
