  1. I work (part time, per diem) at Transcare in Dutchess and yea, they don't hire unless you're 21 either. It mostly has to do with being able to drive. They need both partners to be able the drive the ambulance, that way one isn't being the EMT or medic all shift, while the other drives the whole time. I also believe that their insurance has a clause saying noone under 21 can drive company vehicles. Not absolutely positive on that one though.

  2. I agree with LC968. I think that sometimes asking for an expedite helps volunteer organizations form crews with a little bit more of a sense of urgency. Instead of going 5 sets of tones for an EMT, one may come out on the first or second. Of course, I believe that the term should be reserved for extremely problematic cases and that everyone should assume due caution as usual.

  3. In cases if EDP's it is important to know your own limitations. As a female FF/EMT, I know that I am not personally able to properly restrain a 200 lb male who is emotionally unstable and combative with the EMS crew. Use your resources. If there is a medical emergency, ask the PD to come in the ambulance with you. If there is no medical emergency, don't risk the protection of yourself and your crew, let the PD handle it.
