  1. What an unbelievable website. I was totally in awe when I found it and went through the these very rare photos.

Please read the instructions before viewing .......THESE PICTURES ARE VERY PROFOUND It is fortunate that these have survived. Most probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate.

Popular during the war, they lost their appeal after wards and so many were sold for the glass. Many used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear.

These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 150 years ago: A compendium of photos from era of the War Between the States. Run the cursor over the photograph and the picture caption will pop up.

    Click on original photos

Click photo to enlarge and to read the caption. Click here please

  2. This situation happens for both volunteer and career. There have been incidents where career departements call in mutual aid from across the county (westchester) before even thinking about calling in volunteers 2 minutes away. Until we can settle the differences that divide us we will not be able to provide safe and effective fire prevention.

Thats because you will never know what you are going to get when you call volunteers.(Time of the alarm day of the week) With a paid dept calling Ma from a paid dept u know you are going to get 3-4 interior firemen and an officer.

  4. I apologize if my response seemed a dig at Moose. I realize the line was sarcastic. The purpose was to raise a point. All to often members, EMS, FD and PD, approach incidents with the lets put on a good show cowboy attitude and it carelessly exposes them along with other members to injury or worse.

Thats why they had the hose line the way they did,so they can be on camera. :o

  5. Jeffrey Connolly insists it sends the wrong message. "It doesn't look good for the taxpayers, particularly in this economy."

Lets check your record Jeffrey when you were the executive director of the Boston Finance Committee for 30 years. I am sure you got alot of free meals, a take home car with gas paid by the city of Boston and alot more.

  6. It may have been a good stop but that is most likely because of proper training of a few, and not sufficient manpower at the beginning of the fire ( when it matters). If my house was on fire I wouldn't want to wait 10 minutes for 3 departments to assemble meanwhile everything I owned burned. Just because it was the middle of the day isn't an excuse, you're either a well staffed department or you're not and if you claim to be that means you can fight a fire at anytime of day no matter what. While I love being a volunteer firefighter I don't want to watch my house burn to the ground, or be one of those first in firefighters knowing that I have no back up outside whatsoever.

    THANK YOU!! WELL SAID!!!

if you knew the terms and the cause of the fire and the way it traveled it was still a damn good stop wait for the pictures to be posted on mohegan's website or the information to be made public about the cuase

Didn't say anything about the fire, and i do not know the terms and cause of the fire. If they made a good stop then great job!!

  7. at 2:30 in the afternoon on a monday how many firefighter do you expect can show up??? try and factor in how many of these people are working , or dedicated to some other issue in their lives ??? THAT IS WHAT MUTUAL AID PLANS ARE DRAWN UP FOR give them a break. christ even my department had a lil bit of a hard time getting the engine out but we provided sufficient manpower to mohegan. Given the time of day and that no one was home we all (meaning all the dept.'s that responded) , and where the fire started and how it traveled made one hell of a stop on that house and to all the members of this site that are members of the departments that responded to that fire you/we made one good stop guys good job!!

I am not giving no breaks out if its my house thats on fire

  8. I just hope the $100 million will not be given to the Hatian government(or lack thereof) to spend as they see fit!

In the past 10 years more than $4bn has gone to rebuild communities and infrastructure devastated by hurricanes, floods and landslides, but mismanagement, lack of coordination and attempts by global institutions to use Haiti as a neo-liberal economic testbed are widely believed to have frustrated all efforts. A foreign debt of $1.5bn has weighed down the economy. Last year, the government paid $79m to service debt, but received under half that to support schools, health and transport. The danger is that money expected to pour in to rebuild the shattered state will be again misappropriated by an elite, or serve to further undermine the government
