  1. Ask your instructor(s). If they do not have a copy then you can probably get one through the FSA bookstore in Montour Falls at the academy.

Yeah, I did ask them and they told me to check the fire science academy. But I didn't see it. Maybe I was at the wrong site, or maybe I'm losing my mind. I'll keep checking.

  2. I have to admit, I love this class. The instructors are great! I've been having a blast learning. Tomorrow's the first practical day. Can't wait!!

I have one problem though, I can't seem to find the addendum for the Delmar Textbook. I google'd it and didn't find much. Any helpful hints?

  3. I was driving to school this morning around 7:30 and passed by a car accident (possibly 3 cars). It was on the Taconic State Parkway in the Southbound lanes by Rt. 6. Does anyone have any info on this?

On Tues. 9/16/07 at 07:09am, Mohegan units were dispatched to the Taconic State Parkway southbound at Rt. 6 for a motor vevicle accident with possible extrication. While units were enroute, 60 Control dispatch advised that it was confirmed extrication as per PD units on scene. Upon arrival of units, 1 vehicle was found to be resting precariously upside down on top of another vehicle and the operator of the lower vehicle entrapped within the vehicle. Members immediately put Hurst tools (Jaws Of Life) and other extrication tools from Engine 255 to work on the driver's door while other members began to stabilize the upper vehicle utilizing all of the stabilization cribbing from Engine 253. A 1 3/4" hoseline was also stretched from Engine 255 for precautinary purposes during the incident. A rapid extrication was performed opening the door and the patient was extricated out and transfered over to the care of Mohegan EMS and both the Yorktown and Cortlandt paramedics. The operator of the top vehicle was out of the vehicle prior to FD arrival. Both operators were transported by 69B1 and 69B3 to area hospitals. Members stoodby and assisted in traffic control and cleanup of the debris. Units cleared at approximately 8:15am.

Units: 2263, 2265, 2266, Engine 253, Engine 255, 69B1, 69B3, Yorktown 34Medic1. Cortlandt 35medic1, Yorktown PD, New York State Police, NYC DEP Police

  4. When you go to take Fire I with the Delmar book, make sure you use the work book. I do find that IFSTA was an easier read then Delmar, but Delmar has some great information. Just use the work book to assist you.

Also if you can on Amazon.com, they do sell the Fire 1&Fire 2 exam prep, which is great for state day!

It is also amazing that the Fire 1 in NY is 78 hours, and here in Florida it is 160hrs.

When I did fire I in at the County training center, the instructors were great!

Thanks, I'll look around for the workbook - the only book I have now is Delmar. And I'll definitely be looking into the exam prep material.

  5. Congrats!!!!, now make us proud and study your Rear End Off!!!

haha yeah, i've been reading the text book ever since I got it.

I wonder what the practical is going to be like - ah I can't wait.

  6. Firefighter 2 consists of Incident Command Implications, Building Materials and Collapse, Special Rescue, Hydrant Flow and Operability, Hose Tools, Foam Operations, Flammable Liquids/Gases, Detection, Alarm Systems, Fire Cause and Origin, Fire Department Communications, Pre-Fire Planning, Special Situations, Strategy and Tactics

In my class there was an emphasis on communication, situations, and a day of live fire scenarios

Is repelling part of firefighter 2?

  7. Class is 86 hours and will end on Sat. Dec 8th. Get the Delmar text book as soon as possible and start reading. Class now includes class "A" burns at the end. If you keep up on the reading the written test will not be a problem. Practice of practical skills will be required on time outside of class to master the skills. I look forward to having you in my class. See you in October. Bill Dingee Lead Instructor

Yeah, I'm waiting for the text book. The cheif said he'd get it to me soon.

    What does firefighter 2 cover?

  8. Don,

I do believe the notice you are talking about stated, that they were going to phase out the Iden network in the consumer market over the next 5-10yrs as the CDMA and newer technologies become capable of handling the direct-connect service. The Iden network then is supposed to be used by Government and Private organizations (accounts). Iden is superior for the "walkie-talkie" as compared to CDMA. That is why the Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint "walkie-talkies" never became popular. Iden will be around for a while still.

Correct, The information that I received when I worked for Nextel stated that iDEN is being phased out for public/commercial use. Military use will still stay, but iDEN for us as customers will change to a CDMA powered PTT "walkie talkie"

I'm trying to find the documents, it's rather interesting actually. Once I find them I'll forward them so you can take a look.

  9. It's fine. I wouldn't rush to switch, but they're pretty good. The voice quality is much better and reception is decent. There is NO change in how the direct connect works. It's the same. The phone is rugged, but the battery life SUCKS.

You won't notice much of a difference, with one exception. It's nice to be able to recieve a phone call while on direct connect and vice versa.

iDen isn't the "best thing out there", but it's good and I don't think you're going to see it phased out.

Hold out and get the ic902.

Sprint/Nextel already released the statement that they are phasing Nextel out. I wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. But sadly yes, it is being phased out. I'll try and find the notices that I've received from them.

  10. Sprint is pushing their "ic" hybrid phones on many of the Nextel customers. I have not had the chance to try out any of these phones yet.

Has anyone had any experiences with these phones? Are the better or worse then regular Nextel phones?

Personally, they're worse. I've worked with Nextel for about 3 years now. These hybrids are garbage. It's CDMA technology for cell use, but iDEN technology for direct connect (PTT)

The CDMA is from sprint, and it's not that good. The iDEN technology is the best out right now, but it's being phased out by Sprint's CDMA. In 2010 iDEN will be gone and the transformation to an all CDMA network will be complete.
