Hyde Park police are investigating an accident on Route 9G in which a Verizon flag person was hit by a vehicle.

Police have closed Route 9G between Fallkill Road and North Cross Road while the accident is investigated.

Hyde Park Police Lt. Don Goddard said the flag person was struck by a PT Cruiser and then hit the windshield of the vehicle before being thrown from the vehicle when the motorist drove off the road and struck a tree.

A male victim was transported to Saint Francis Hospital, police said.

No further details were immediately available.

  2. if im correct, i think that the new state troopers cars with the LED's and the dutchess county sheriffs cars with the LED's, you can shut off the front facing lights on the lightbar but keep the rear facing ones on. but im not really sure about that. can anyone confirm this???

Body of man who jumped off overpass in Brewster found

By The Journal News • February 16, 2008

BREWSTER - The body of a 29-year-old man who apparently jumped last night off an Interstate 684 overpass into a branch of the Croton River was found this morning, state police said.

The rescue effort began last night, but had to be called off about 8 p.m. before resuming this morning.

Police declined to release the man's name or where he was from.

Derek Brockhoff, the supervising investigator for the state police in Brewster, said the man jumped from the overpass, which is about 40 feet above the swift-moving water.

The stretch of water is about 2.25 miles long and is a popular fishing spot despite its proximity to the highway, according to Web sites.

Man apparently jumped off Interstate 684 overpass into Croton River

BREWSTER - A 29-year-old man apparently jumped last night off an Interstate 684 overpass into a branch of the Croton River, state police said.

Despite a large rescue effort, the man was not found and authorities planned to resume their search this morning.

Police declined to release the man's name or where he was from.

Derek Brockhoff, the supervising investigator for the state police in Brewster, said the man jumped from the overpass, which is about 40 feet above the swift-moving water.

Brockhoff said he could not comment on a bystander's account that, according to a radio dispatch, the man was in a vehicle with his mother driving on I-684 about 5:15 p.m. when they stopped on the highway, he got out of the car and jumped off the bridge.

At least three firetrucks equipped with large lights trained on the water, ambulances and other rescue vehicles set up a staging area and command post on a small bridge located on Brewster Hill Road off Sodom Road.

A swift-water rescue team from Yorktown was called out to search the river. Rescuers on rafts searched the water while others scoured through the dense woods along the banks of the river. A helicopter with a large searchlight hovered over the river and woods for about two hours. Brockhoff said crews were searching at least two miles out from the bridge last night.

The stretch of water is about 2.25 miles long and is a popular fishing spot despite its proximity to the highway, according to Web sites.

The search was called off for the night about 8 p.m. Brockhoff said that it was unlikely anyone could have survived a fall from the bridge.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. about a mile south of the Interstate 84 interchange.

It took firefighters about an hour to free the man, who was traveling alone. He was then flown by helicopter to the Westchester Medical Center.

Police and firefighters cleared the scene a few minutes before 3 p.m

ARTHURSBURG — The man who was shot in the abdomen while hunting in LaGrange Sunday morning died late Sunday afternoon, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office reported today.

Police identified the man as 50-year-old East Fishkill resident Ronald Cirillo. Police said the fatal wound to his abdomen was a result of an accidental discharge from his own shotgun.

At about 9:42 a.m. Sunday, the Sheriff's Office went to a wooded area off Emans Road for a 911 call of a person with a gunshot wound to the stomach. A sheriff's deputy and a state trooper found Cirillo about a mile off the roadway. He had been hunting with two other people, police said.

Cirillo was flown to Westchester Medical Center, where he died while undergoing emergency surgery.

3 dead in collision on Route 376

One child killed; infant survivor taken to hospital

    Poughkeepsie Journal

EAST FISHKILL — Three people, including one child, have been killed in a crash on Route 376 in which their Chevy Malibu slammed into a Town of East Fishkill Highway Department truck, police said.

According to East Fishkill Police Chief Brian Nichols, the car was traveling south on Route 376 around 10:30 a.m., when it lost control near the Probst Terrace intersection. It was then hit by a Town of East Fishkill highway vehicle, which was traveling north.

No one was ejected from the vehicles.

"It's a pretty devastating accident," Nicols said.

The surviving infant was taken via ambulance to Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, where the baby was stabilized. The baby is now being transported via ambulance to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, said Saint Francis Hospital spokesman Larry Hughes. The sex of the baby has not been made public.

The driver of the highway department vehicle was not transfered to the hospital, Hughes said.

Giant tarps are now blocking the accident from view, and will remain up until the bodies are removed from the vehicle. Route 376 is closed in this area. Traffic is being diverted onto Saddleridge and Kent roads. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.

Nicols said the scene has been emotional for the police and emergency personnel.

"We have a lot of emergency services personnel that are having trouble," he said.

The state Department of Transportation worked to straighten out a curve in Route 376 between Kent Road and Probst Terrace earlier this decade. The work was completed in September 2001.

While the work did help, it's still a dangerous area, said Janet McHugh, who lives on Probst Terrace.

"This corner is known for terrible accidents," she said. McHugh herself had been in one at the same spot two years ago.

The road doesn't appear to twisty looking at it, she said, but you can feel the curve when you're driving it.

The intersection is also the site of a school bus stop, McHugh said.

"Thank God there was no school today," she said. "It's a very sad situation, but it could have been even worse if kids were standing there."

  10. little old news, but thought people would like to know

from the Pawling News Chronicle- Jan 3, 2008

In the Pawling town board's final meeting before the new councilmen take office Jan. 2, coverage by Alamo EMS was extended an extra month to give the new board time to negotiate with ambulance providers for a contract in 2008. The extra month of coverage, which will carry the town into the end of January, will cost about $27,000, prorated from the town's 2007 Alamo contract of $272,252, which took effect April 1 after Empire Ambulance, which had been operating in the town without a contract since December 2006, pulled out of Pawling, citing financial losses as the reason.

Skyrocketing ambulance costs have been a growing concern for municipalities throughout the area, with providers tripling their rates due in part to increases in fuel costs. In 2005, Pawling's contract with Alamo cost the town $127,000. This year, according to Councilmen Bill Johnson, quotes have already come in well above the even $300,000 the town has budgeted for emergency services for the coming year.

He said, however, he remains optimistic the board can negotiate a contract that's within budget.

"I have some ideas that should bring costs within the $300,000 the town has budgeted," said Johnson, who asked not to divulge too much information regarding the negotiations.

He said though that Alamo is among the providers being considered.

Though the board has been involved in discussions with other towns for a potential intermunicipal agreement through SEDAC, a consortium seeking a single ambulance provider to serve the towns of Beekman, Union Vale, Dover and Pawling, Johnson said results are a long way off. Meanwhile, he said he looks forward to working with the new board to negotiate a new contract.

Can't wait to see what the town decides to do. Doesnt look like its going to be cheap but we all know that nothing is cheap anymore.

  11. Up here in dutchess county, the town of pawling has side wings on most of the trucks to help push back the shoulders of the roads. This action in the long run helps out expecially if its a heavy snow season and the shoulders of the road get packed with alot of snow. Otherwise , eventually the snow would just fall back on the road after you plow it.
