  1. The fire academy in Utica is overnight. They are up at 0530 and alot of the time would not be done with the day till 2200. It is very military type in style. I believe the main reason that it is an overnight is because it helps to instill discipline and also helps to teach brotherhood. The entire building is checked everyday to ensure that it is spotless and all chores are compleated. If one thing is not done the entire group is punished. This makes sure everyone is pulling their weight and doing there part like they will have to one day on the fire scene.

  2. Not for nothing but in this case it could have been a lot worse. And rolling 8 pecies to the scene is a good idea. Even at s brush fire. You never know what the exposures are. The perfect example is what happened to croton 2 rainfalls ago. They got dispatched to a brush fire which the updated to a working structure fire.

What makes rolling 8 pieces of apparatus to every scene a good idea? Do they not have response areas? Is it a manpower issue? You are stripping the equipment from one side of the town leaving it unprotected to send it to a small incident or even a false alarm on the other side of town. Not to mention the excess risk you put yourself and fellow fighterfighters in as well as the public racing across town.

  3. it's a big conflict of interest, so that would be bad.

with the former mayor under investigation with the feds, the issues with the old commissioner, the current mayor spending campaign funds to take some co-workers to Italy, the old rescue 1 given away, then the new owner selling it for scraps, i feel like i watching a sitcom!

...keep up the wonderful entertainment mt vernon, you're getting some high viewer ratings from me

What makes it a conflict of interest? If he is no longer an acting member of the union why is it a conflict?

  4. I put fuel stabilizer in the motorcycle every year right before the winter and I have no problems starting it back up in the spring. A buddy of mine didnt put it in and he had to go and get the carburator and hoses cleaned and replaced because the gas "gelled".

  5. I dont beleive that we are at the point in the economy where there is going to be a huge number of arsons yet. However we may soon be getting to that point. The fact that there is such advanced ways to determine fire cause and origin I do not beleive will deter people from committing arson if there mind is set on it. It wasnt that long ago that the state had to put together an arson task force because of all the fires in Utica.

  6. When I was in the academy we had a couple of departments who would use their recruits this same type of way. In my opinion this is not a smart idea, and good job by the Auburn Local to try to put a stop to this. The fact that it saves money on overtime should not be an issue. These recruites have not meet all the standards yet set by the state to be considered firefighters so they should not be put to work just to save on overtime. This is a very unsafe pratice that puts everyone at risk from the general public to all emergency personel working at the scene and should be put to a stop everywhere across the entire state.

  7. Check this out...

I just graduated the academy last year and we had to do these auditorium raises numerious times during the academy, starting with a 24 foot ladder and working our way up to a 50ft. Bangor. The only difference was in this video they appear to have padding in case someone falls, we didn't (did it in the middle of a parking lot).

I know that alot of departments up state still carry and use these ladders, for things such as ladder placement in a tight alley where a 35ft ladder is not long enough and aerial placement is impossible.

  8. I am not suprised at all, 6.8 million dollars for a new firehouse is crazy. The just spent 600k on a new rescue. This district is a small district and it would have been a big tax increase for homeowners. The poughkeepsie journal reports that it would have cost taxpayers an additional $165 per year for a home valued at 250k and an additional $231 for a home valued at 350k. If the building needs repairs that is understandable however this cost just seems excessive.

  9. I feel it is a personal preference. I have had both gxtreme and morning pride, and I feel that gxtreme is much more comfertable then morning pride. In my opinion morning pride feels heavier too. The only thing I truely like better about the morning pride is that you can get the internal harness for it whereas I beleive you can only get the external harness with the globe.
