Click on links for more informationDuties: Serves as a fully trained member of a fire fighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Responds to alarms and combats fire requiring the full performance of fire fighting tasks of moderate difficulty involving structures, equipment, and facilities. Serves as driver-operator of major motorized fire fighting equipment, exercising a thorough knowledge of equipment capabilities and installation physical characteristics. Performs fire protection inspections. Inspect quarters, office buildings, shops, warehouses, etc., for fire hazards. Performs maintenance, operational, housekeeping, emergency and standby duties. Operates alarm room equipment including radio and fire reporting facilities. Assists in loading, transporting, and unloading the sick, injured convalescent, and deceased patients, as well as medical supplies when authorized. General Schedule Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized Experience is experience that has demonstrated the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position. This includes knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques in order to carry out fire protection and prevention programs and operations. Such duties may include (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. See Other Requirements Section for additional information on the following KSAs. In addition, applicants must demonstrate the following KSAs. 1. Knowledge of Rescue and Firefighter procedures. 2. Knowledge of fighting equipment, systems and apparatus. 3. Ability to provide life saving service. Must possess valid state EMT certification and be able to obtain NY State Certification. Document completion required certification within application/resume with date of certification or submit a copy of the certificates. Position requires wearing of protective equipment (e.g., respirators, safety glasses, etc. Duties are subject to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations regarding hazardous wastes. CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Selectees are required to become certified at the appropriate certification levels as an Apparatus Driver Operator for: Pumpers, Air Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), Aerials, Tillers and Water Tenders.
